Some of you will recall that this site used to be linked in a lot of Slashdot articles, despite having only a few pages. Boing Boing, with their usual creativity, has managed to depict Goatse's most commonly linked photo while still remaining within the bounds of good taste."
You could put google adds on it but I shudder to think what it would advertise. Probably make a lot of money, though.

it's bad enough when someone does a first post to goatse.cx, why the heck is this making news? internet shock sites should not be posted on popular forums, it's stupid, why do we get a news article about shock sites, i always thought the /. community of moderators were a little more mature.

There are shills on slashdot. Apparently, I'm one of them.
Anyone else finds it pretty unfair that the registrar took the domain back from its owner, then allows someone else to buy it for hundreds of dollars? Pretty close to stealing if you ask me.

Last I looked the bidding was up over $40 million. Worse, the pattern of the bids suggested that the bidders who are bidding can't possibly be serious. Bidder 20 was a head at 30m, then bid 40m without a counter bid. Bidder 19 had previously done something similar.

I just checked with my registrar, and while the major goatse addresses (com, org, net, and biz) are all taken, there are open goatse variants, including goatse.us.com and goatse.eu.com. Get 'em while they're hot.

Goatse was a culturally significant internet meme and the domain was suspended (revoked) because some kook at the registrar found the content tasteless. There's plenty of content I find tasteless online, Goatse was nowhere near as offensive to me as the GWB presidency yet I'm not about to start pressuring ICANN to withdraw the domains registered by pro-bush news sites.
Dot cx (now CIIA) set a dangerous precedent in revoking the goatse domain, content regulation via DNS is nothing more than an abuse of power. cx domains are worthless, the registry has established it will pull domains if they don't like the content. Avoid.
Tubgirl is so much better than Goatse.
And by "better", I mean "more thoroughly disgusting". The latter makes me laugh; the former turns my stomach.
It's just Gates and Ellison in a bidding war.

One of the things I liked about goatse.cx is the clever wordplay... pronounce "goatse cx" and it sounds like "goat sex". Yet, it most references to the site, even the discussion on this thread, it's just referred to as "goatse". People don't generally shorten "del.icio.us" to "icio", because there is a realization that the domain name as a whole has special significance, yet the brilliant and subtle humor of goatse.cx is lost on so many Slashdotters. And with the domain up for sale, soon that comic genius will be lost to the world as well -- a sad day in Internet history. Goodbye goatse.cx guy, you opened up your orifice and our hearts, and made this world a little better place... for posting troll links anyway.

Ok, I admit that I never spent any time perusing goatse, but I notice that the wikipedia article doesn't match what I read in slashdot threads. I remember a thread where some explainded that the "guy" at goatse was a hermaphrodite and that people were too shocked to realize that they were looking up a vagina, not up some deformed anus... But the wikipedia article say's that it's a photoshopped anus. Someone here must have the expertise to answer this important historical question!

Goatse was a small, small part of internet but its hard to deny the fact that in its own twisted way, it helped shaped the modern internet. Goatse was a hazing ground for early internet users, people UNDERSTOOD that the internet was wild, untamed, uncontrolled territory. We would look away in anger and disgust, but then we'd come back, look at it again and laugh. Compare that to modern day extreme shock websites and you see oversized pictures of guns being pointed at the camera and violent acts 'too bloody for mainstream TV'. People refuse to accept the fact that the internet is a window to an outside world called 'reality.' You see this all the time with blogs. People rant on them, professing their loyalty to a political party/religious group/video game company and then act shocked when they get targeted by opposition groups.
THIS kind of social change is historical evidence. And in 20/50/100 years in the future, they'll be writing about how much politically correct the internet became compared to when websites like Goatse were around.
