US Sees Blockbuster Games Release Week

If you've been looking forward to a game's release, odds are that it's coming out this week. Gamasutra has the full list of titles hitting stores in the next few days, and it's a tsunami of gaming goodness. Assassin's Creed, Mario Galaxy, and Crysis are probably the three headlining titles, but no console is spared the deluge. PC Highlights: EverQuest: Secrets of Faydwer, EverQuest II: Rise of Kunark, Kane and Lynch, SimCity Societies. PS3 Highlights: Assassin's Creed, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, Kane and Lynch, Beowulf. 360 Highlights: America's Army: True Soldiers, Assassin's Creed, Beowulf, BlackSite: Area 51, Kane & Lynch. Wii Highlights: Mario Galaxy, Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles, Geometry Wars: Galaxies.

My guess is you mean one of a couple different things:

"Racing a Large Mug of Frozen Pee", which is disgusting and doesent make sense.

"Racing a Large Mug of Frozen Peas", which is wierd but still doesen't make sense,

or "Racing Large Mug of Frozen Peas", which is different than the last one becuase that would imply it's a mug of frozen peas made for racing. Regardless, still doesen't make sense.

That's just marketing. there has been almost no non-tech circle marketing (that I know of anyway) for Rock Band, but it's developed huge buzz at trade shows and in gaming circles online. Don't forget last week and the week after this one. It sucks, during Sept 24th - Nov 20th I am going to have spent over 500 dollars on games. And I already own the two consoles I buy for. Oh well, the fact that there are enough good games in that short a time span is probably one of those "good problems". Do you have to buy them all at once? I picked up four of the high-rated older games for my 360 when I got it and I still haven't made it past the first two, they're too darn enjoyable to set down and pick up something else. From the sounds of it, I'm going to enjoy the shit out of Mass Effect -- but I'll probably be doing so after it hits the bargain bin. Win/win for me. :)

Well, scratch SimCity Societies off your list. I've been a long standing addict of the series and this is the deal breaker.

      Why I'd recommend the game:
      1. It has the name SimCity.
      2. It looks like a city simulator.

Why I (can't recommend/would recommend avoiding) the game:
      1. Created by Tilted Mill. Throw yourself against Children of the Nile for a couple hours before you even consider SimCity.
      2. Terrible website. The "About the game" is scant and rather meaningless. There are a couple screenshots that show nothing and some relatively unhelpful video clips.
      3. I can't even ask the question "What's the game like?" because in order to get posting "rights" on their forum, you have to register an account and activate it using a game code from the purchased game.

Sorry guys. You dropped the ball on this one. Congratulations EA-suits, you've killed another franchise.

Firaxis, where are you now in this our darkest hour? City Simulation can be saved, hear my cry, be our light!

I just posted about this on another board where they were discussing Societies.

I've seen the rabid SimCity fanbase lamenting the loss of the nth degree of micromanagement and replacement with Attitudes or whatever the hell they're calling those high level attributes in Societies. I agree that if the part of SimCity you loved was that micromanagement, it looks like the game is heading in a different direction.

But personally, I struggled with the micromanagement. I recently reloaded SC Deluxe and a bunch of mods to give it another go, but I was already tiring of the tedium required to get things really up and running. So the new lighter version might actually have some appeal to me if it's not oversimplified or campy.

I'm at least going to give it a shot and hope that EA hasn't again pulled out the textbook on how to kill franchises.

I know I'm probably being overly optimistic, but if I am at least there's like 10 other games to drown my sorrows in..

  17. too many games at once? by jollyreaper · · Score: 2, Interesting

Maybe not, I dunno. With movies, conventional wisdom said that the audience would only see a couple movies in a summer so every studio was competing for a fixed number of viewings. What the studios later came to realize was that demand was fairly elastic: put out 2 good movies and they'll be watched, put out 20 good movies and they'll be watched. Conversely, put out no good movies and you won't get many viewers. The thing is, a movie doesn't take up anything more than an evening. Unless people are that fickle with their full-priced games, it should take them longer than that to properly experience the thing.

I guess that would be an interesting statistic: for the game-buying public, especially the ones that drop the full price when the games come out, how long do they typically stick with a game before getting bored and buying a new one? If two games they think the'll like come out on the same weekend, will they buy both the same day or pick one to play and get the other one once it's half-price some months later?

Since there are so many more adult gamers now, I'd imagine the purchase cycle isn't driven as much by birthdays and Christmas as when gamers were mostly kids.
