Ricardo Montalban Dead At 88
DesScorp writes "Ricardo Montalban, immortalized as Khan in the Star Trek franchise, is dead at age 88, passing at his Los Angeles home. Montalban had a long and successful career on television and film. The voice of Rich Corinthian Leather is silenced, but we still have the memories."
KHAAAAAAAAAAAN!
i shit out an obama.
No disrespect intended.. but I didn't know he was still alive!

“Common sense is not so common.” — Voltaire
Ricardo Montalban is now in Hell. And it is not relevant that Ricardo Montalban boasted that he does not believe in Hell when he lived on earth. He believes in Hell now. Like the rich man that the Lord Jesus told about in Luke 16, who died and in Hell he lifted up his eyes being in torments and he cried, "Lord Abraham have mercy on me, and send Lazarus the beggar on earth, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am tormented in flame." Luke 16:23,24. When told that he could not have a drop of water, forever, though tormented in flames, he begged somebody to rise from the dead to preach to his kinfolk, thus they also die and come to his place of torment. Ricardo Montalban the filthy blasphemer, the obscene pottymouth skeptic, agnostic and profane atheist had nothing but disdain for God and the Bible, all the days of his tragic life is at this minute and and forever writhing and screaming in exquisite pain, pleading for mercy from that God he flipped off while performing for NBC lucre. Montalban made lots of money making fun of god, now he must deal with God face to face forever. The Lord the God repayeth them that hate him to their face, to destroy them, he will not be slapped to them that hateth him, he will repay him to his face. Deut. 7:10. When Montalban died January the fourteenth, he split hell wide open at once, as it is written, "Hell from beneath is moved for thee to meet thee at thy coming. It stirreth up the dead for thee. All they shall speak and say unto thee: art thou also become weak as we 'Ricardo Montalban?' The worm is spread unto thee, and the worms cover thee. Isaiah 14:9,10. Westboro Baptist Church exists to publish Gospel truth and thereby to expose Satanic lies. Ricardo Montalban is in hell, deal with it! You will soon join him there, America is doomed! We will picket Ricardo Montalban's funeral.
...I'm not dead. See? I'm posting on Slashdot.

I'll always remember him as Armando from the third and fourth "Planet of the Apes" movies.
The Internet is full. Go away.
This is a cover up. He was actually launched into space with other geneticaly enhanced humans on the SS Botany Bay, only to be picked up in a couple hundred years by James T. Kirk.
Another famous death today: Patrick McGoohan, of The Prisoner fame. See http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7829267.stm
From Hell's heart, I stab at thee!

DeForest Kelley: Dead. James Doohan: Dead. Majel Barret: Dead. And now him.
Yet we have to endure that sword of Damocles that Shatner just might sing again.
We used to have a Bill of Rights. Now, with the rights gone, all we have left is the bill.
Mr. Montalban was probably the most significant Latino in Star Trek. It's very interesting; in the original Star Trek, when we had all of this racial integration: Uhura being a significant black person, Sulu being a significant Asian, Chekov being a significant Russian, etc. However, the only real latino we had in Star Trek was Mr. Montalban, who was the antagonist in both Space Seed and its sequel, The Wrath of Kahn.
I remember, when The Wrath of Kahn came out, watching an interview with Mr. Montalban. He talked about how his success as an actor (he also had the very famous role as Mr. Roarke in Fantasy Island) made his role one of the first really successful Latino roles in Hollywood (There was also, before him, Desi Arnaz in I Love Lucy, whose success resulted in Desilu Productions who later on produced Star Trek). Of course, with such beautiful Latinas as Jessica Alba, Christina Aguilera, and Jennifer Lopez on the silver screen today, nobody thinks twice about a Latino having a title role, but it wasn't always that way.
At least now he won't be... buried alive!
And with his last breath, he stabs at thee for all these horrible one-liners.

Truly a sad day as Patrick McGoohan, "The Prisoner," "Secret Agent" among others, has also died . Sad, sad, sad.
and corinthian is not any kind of genuine special leather-- just a marketing name.
but he said it soooo well.
She was like chocolate when she drank... semi-sweet at first and then increasingly bitter.
Ricardo Montalban dies. Steve Jobs takes leave of absence.
Hmmm... has anyone ever seen them together?
"No, Kirk, you can't get away. From hell's heart, I stab at thee. For hate's sake I spit my last breath at thee."
With any luck Ricardo activated a genesis device shortly before dying and we'll soon have a nearby M-Class planet to study...
It was actually "fine Corinthian leather".
It's just often misquoted as "rich".
I like you, Stuart. You're not like everyone else, here, at Slashdot.

Seriously though, sad loss. Enjoyed his acting.
Just saw this on the news... couldn't believe it..... sigh..

It began on episode 24

And they marooned him on Ceti Alpha 5
But we knew he'd be back someday
'Cuz he's too big for television
They knew it even then
So they put him in the movie Star Trek II,
And they should have brought him back for Star Trek X

what the fuck ever racist. is it so hard for you to see people as people and not a race?
Mr. Montalban was probably the most significant Latino in Star Trek
Well, there was Robert Beltran whose parents were first generation Mexican immigrants. Of course I like to pretend that Voyager never existed so I'm going to agree with you that Montalban was the most significant Latino.
nobody thinks twice about a Latino having a title role, but it wasn't always that way.
Very true.

So when Shatner dies can we yell KIIIIRRRRRKKKK!?
People always remember the Rich Corinthian Leather.
I remember the Plush Crushed Velour.
(from wiki)
Kirk and Khan never confront each other face-to-face during the film; all of their interactions are over a viewscreen or through communicators, and the their scenes were filmed four months apart.
Montalban enjoyed making the film, and counted the role as a career highlight. His major complaint was that he was never face-to-face with Shatner for a scene. "I had to do my lines with the script girl, who, as you might imagine, sounded nothing like Bill [Shatner]," he explained.
His parents were from Spain, and he grew up a bit of an outsider in Mexico because of that, so calling him latino is a little misleading.

Had to be said.
I just heard some sad news on talk radio - Actor Ricardo Montalban was found dead in his Los Angeles home this morning. There weren't any more details. I'm sure everyone in the Slashdot community will miss him - even if you didn't enjoy his work, there's no denying his contributions to popular culture. Truly an American icon.
I had but a simple dream, to destroy all humans.
And here we were thinking he'd return in a later sequel. There is always CG I suppose.
That or they could bring in Khan's descendant Con.

I'm stunned that no one has posted about the passing of Patrick McGoohan, star of TV's Danger Man (Secret Agent in the U.S.), and the massive cult hit The Prisoner , which he also conceived, produced, wrote, and directed. I remember watching both of these series as a kid in the 60's, and I remain surprised that The Prisoner ran for only 17 episodes (it was conceived as a miniseries), and that the entirety of the series consists of the attempts of McGoohan's character, Number Six, to escape the Village; ascertain the identity of the mysterious Number 1, the person in charge; and above all, to retain his individuality and sanity. ("I am not a number - I am a free man!")
The Prisoneris considered one of the most groundbreaking original TV series of all time, and it's weird, mind-bending tales with elements of science fiction and allegory have had a profound influence. Patrick McGoohan died at his Los Angeles home after a short illness on the same day as Ricardo Montalbán.
Bit of trivia: McGoohan became the highest paid actor in the U.K after Danger Man became a hit, and was subsequently offered, and turned down, the roles of both James Bond and Simon Templar (The Saint). Said roles kick-started the careers of both Sean Connery and Roger Moore.
Hilarious to watch. Seriously, you can't come up with anything better than the guy whose catchphrases are "God hates fags", "God hates America", and "Priests rape boys"?
I thought Christianity was about love. This guy is all about hate.
The saddest part of this is that it's not even about Ricardo Montalban, It's about George Carlin. Montalban was a devout Roman catholic.
Don't thank God, thank a doctor!
I just showed this movie to my wife for the first time yesterday.

At 60+, Mantalban was still built like a god with big slabs of muscle.
OTH, the pudgier Shatner has built a wonderful successful career of fine roles since star trek.
So it depends on how you are scoring.
Shatner tends to be naturally pudgier, but he's still in good shape, especially for his age. James Spader remarked that Shatner would do more pushups on the set than he himself could do when he was younger.
Montalban kept in shape too; he just had better genes.
Life is hard, and the world is cruel
Buried alive... buried alive...
Will his casket be lined with soft Corinthian leather?
His parents were from Spain, and he grew up a bit of an outsider in Mexico because of that, so calling him latino is a little misleading.
Chicano would, perhaps, be misleading. I think Latino would still be appropriate...
That reminds me. Wasn't there a book series about the Eugenic Wars with Khan as part of it?

Montalban always prided himself on his physical conditioning. Even though his injury prevented him from continuing to dance full time he stayed in top shape.
Hispanic would be the most appropriate term.
Wow, that must have been some heavy lifting, for, as everyone knows, God and the Bible are opposites to each other. God is, well, Godly. The Bible? Like all religion, it's the work of the Devil.
You should also consider that Montalban's character was not Latino (Khan was a Sikh, according to Wikipedia). Neither was Beltran's, per se, but a Native American character is more significantly diverse than a Latino one anyway, since Latinos are just half Native American and half European.

How come Majel didn't get a showcased /. article? There was mention of it, but not a main new story :( - RIP to the two of them
I assume you're referring to the characters, not the actors, since you cite Chekov as a Russian. Khan was not Latino; he was a Sikh from northern India.

Montalban always reminds me of the character Victor (pronounced "Bictor") from Futurama who was pretty obviously modeled after his soft Corinthian leather days:
VICTOR:
The luxurious seats are stuffed with
eagle down and the dashboard inlaid
with the beaks of a thousand eagles.
Also, there are some eagles under the
floorboards.
I am Ricardo Montalban.
My keyboads not woking popely.
He was very cordial and friendly. We had set-up our two ladder and planks on the sidewalk to get a great view of the start of the parade on Orange Grove. He wave to the crowd as people were saying, "The plane, The plane!"
>> "However, the only real latino we had in Star Trek was Mr. Montalban, who was the antagonist in both Space Seed and its sequel, The Wrath of Kahn."
> True, but playing the villain is so much fun.
Damn straight! "Antagonist" is too mild a word...
The Prisoner is every bit as geek as Richardo Montalban. I remember watching The Prisoner on PBS in the 70's and watching the discussion shows afterwards where College folks discussed what everything meant in that episode. - It doesn't get more geek than that. I feel pretty sad about these deaths.
Enjoy your Karma, after all you earned it. Feel your Karma Joe, feel it burn.
Hispanic would be the most appropriate term.
Why not 'Spanish'?

I was much more sad when I heard about No.6 passing that I was about Kahn.
The editors made the wrong choice in highlighting this story and not McGoohan.
I love the Space Seed episode of TOS and Wrath of Kahn is the only movie that holds up really well, but even combined they pale in comparison to The Prisoner. Now add in Secret Agent and it's not even close.

He mentioned this in uncountable interviews.
Many Mexicans have parents born in Spain for all kind of historic and political reasons, also many families in Mexico have mostly Spanish ancestry and little Native American blood.

He was born in Mexico City, a very distinguished Chilango.
Mexican law states that anybody born in Mexican soil is a Mexican citizen by birth irrespective of the origin of their parents (as if Spanish parents was a rare occurrence in Mexico ....)

I am surprised everybody goes about Star Trek and forgets about his role in Planet of the Apes.
He plays an heroic character that dies defending the weak. I am sure he was very pleased about that since Latino actors didn't get positive roles in Hollywood for many years.

In other words, they hold out some measure of hope, however small, for everyone.
Because Spanish is the term for people born in Spain and Hispanic is the term for people born on Spanish America
Gotcha, so it's birth-based, not hereditary. Is there an nomenclature for denoting heritage, as in 'Irish American'? 'Spanish Hispanic'?

Two Hollywood heavyweights Ricardo Montalban and Patrick McGoohan have gone on to the great stage in the sky and left behind large and storied bodies of work. Despite both actors' successes on the silver screen, both were best known for some of their work on television â" and the roles both were best known for took place on islands, Montalban having starred in Fantasy Island, and McGoohan in the sci-fi/spy drama The Prisoner. Neither would ever need payday loans, and both worked far into their later years. McGoohan had a role as the English king in Braveheart. Montalban was the villain in Star Trek 2 and recently had a role in the Spy Kids series. To read more, stage an appearance at the payday loans Personal Money Store Money Blog.
