Also, he's going to be saving less if he has less months where he hits the peak rate - quite a bit less actually.

Taking all that into account, there's no way he's actually going to get a positive ROI on it anywhere near as soon as he thinks. Possibly not even in the warranty period (30 years).

Maybe if someone were living in an area with both lots of sunlight and high energy costs it would be a good investment. Otherwise, not so much.

He downloaded something that was supposed to be a complete working package, ready for anyone to use. Whether it is free or open source or not is really irrelevant. If it's still a beta (and it sounds like it is) then it should be posted as such.

I think the term we're looking for here is "tyranny of the majority". Except in many cases it's not even the majority.

I personally didn't vote for either Bush or Obama. Not to say that my choice would have done better, but it really doesn't matter because I still have to put up with whatever garbage they throw on me regardless. My other choice is to raise a lot of money and move somewhere else, where I can put up with the same or worse.

Very few "hardcore" players are going to just not buy a game because it has a "demo" mode like this, but many more "casual" players will buy it, because they know the whole game can be fun and not cause undue frustration. That is the whole point of videogames you know: fun. For some, an extreme challenge is fun. For others, it's not.

Who says metered service is a bad thing? If they actually charged a fair rate, most (pulling a number out of my ass I'd guess greater than 95%) of broadband users would pay significantly less than they do now, and few if any would pay more. All their yelling about some people using too much is mostly a lot of smoke and mirrors and handwaving, in an attempt to increase the already obscene profits they rake in. If it were a metered utility, they would be forced to charge a more fair price almost by default, because it would be much much harder to hide just how much their costs per megabyte are versus what they charge (on average) per megabyte.

Those are the games that we know of. Just because we haven't heard about it doesn't mean it ain't happening. Take Blizzard for example. We know that they're working on SC2 and Diablo 3 right now. But they've also been working on an original-IP MMO that we just found out about in the last few weeks. Do you really think they hadn't been working on that for quite a while before they gave us this tiny bit of info? I'd put money on it that they've got at least another half a dozen more projects that we know nothing about. Same thing for any other developer that can be legitimately considered "big". Some of the projects may never be finished and released; some may not be for 5 years. But they're working on them.

  18. Re:You didn't define independently or big on Defining an Indie Game Developer · · Score: 1

Yeah, taken completely literally that is exactly what "indie" would be. However as it is generally used, I think that would only be part of it. The other part is the size of the developing company. So here is what I'd say is probably the simplest way to define "indie" as it is generally used:

    1. The developer does the work on his own dime.

    2. The developer is small enough that they only work on one or two games at a time.

Also, the big bang and "in the beginning was..." try to explain two different things. They are not mutually exclusive. Taking Genesis literally actually allows for a "big bang" event (initiated by God). "In the beginning" would be the explanation of what was before the big bang.
