Thanks. I wasn't trying to be funny or a troll with that post, but Gentoo really is (as others here already agree) not the most user-friendly OS (especially to install) when compared to Fedora Core, Ubuntu (easiest install I ever saw) or Suse. Afterall, Gentoo isn't trying to appeal to the Average Joe Linux newbie.
It should be noted that Zelda for the Wii might not sell right off as highly as Soul Calibur for the Dreamcast because Zelda will also be available for the GameCube, and so many people (Wii skeptics, budgeters, Zelda-control-purists, etc) will be holding out for the GameCube version of Zelda instead.
Well of course Windows is going to be in the majority of affected machines... There is a dramatically higher number of people in the world using Windows than any other OS, so... wouldn't it make sense?
As a proud user of Kubuntu, I can relate to/.'s tendency to point out everything that appears to be wrong with Windows... but come on, isn't it a little much to explicitly point it out in this case?
I used to have major issues with that as well, having numerous browser windows open and then having one crash and take the rest down. What I love about Firefox 2 is its ability to resume your session when you start it again, so all of your open tabs and windows will resume where they were before it crashed.
Notice how they just automatically assume that all of us would be surprised by this figure? As if all of us really know how much porn composes the internet?
The "weak" list of Virtual Console games is just what's going to be available at launch. They will add more as time progresses.
Also, nobody is forced to re-purchase the games they already own. If you already have an NES, SNES, et cetera, then you probably already own the games that you'd want on those systems... It's not like you're required to buy those same games all over again. If there are games you don't already own, then you can purchase them and play them on the Wii.
Furthermore, if the PS3 is backwards compatible with the PS2 and PS1 games that you already own, then presumably you'd already own a PS2 or PS1... Thus rendering the PS3's backwards compatibility as more of a novelty than a system-seller.
You have to keep in mind that, as one other Slashdotter just said, 1up is comparing apples and oranges.
The PS3 takes the cake with graphics because that was their goal. The best graphics hardware was not Nintendo's goal.
The Wii takes the cake with controls because that's what Nintendo's goal was... Sony instead chose to remain somewhat conservative by continuing to use its tried-and-true PSX controller layout.
So of course each one is going to win in each of its given categories, because it's the opposite of what the other company wanted to do with their respective console.
...And what's this about "extra functionality?" The PS3 plays PS2 and PS1 games?
NEWS FLASH: The Wii is capable of playing games from NES, SNES, N64, GameCube, TurboGrafix, Genesis, and probably more...
And the PS3 can play Blu-Ray movies? Woop-dee freakin' doo. I don't know about everybody else, but I'm going to buy a gaming console to play games. If I want to watch movies, I'll buy a movie player.
Not to be a troll or anything, but... That layout is one of the dumbest ideas I've ever seen.
Just when people are becoming accustomed to the logical ABC layout on small keypads, they decide to just introduce a seemingly random order of the letters. That is not qwerty. It's ewqtuy. The last thing people need is to learn an ordering of letters all over again.
I really don't know why you are amused by the fact that Ballmer doesn't openly embrace free software. As a CEO of a major software company, would you openly encourage the use of free alternatives to the things that you market?
I'm an avid member of the open source community; but come on people, we can't really blame the guy.
Nah.
Don't forget that Microsoft and Nintendo are competitors. Having a Linux core wouldn't make the Wii compatible with anything Microsoft, anyway... Especially considering that Microsoft does not and will not have any say in what Linux is capable of doing.
And anyway, I don't wanna expose my precious Wii to a dirty place.
Some time ago, Nintendo rereleased the game as "Punch Out!!", without the Mike Tyson endorsement. The only difference, aside from the name, was the replacement of Mike Tyson with a generic game character, who was basically the same boss but just with a different face and skin color.
You can count on this Tyson-less version to be what we'll see on the Wii.
I remember being forced to choose a copy of Windows when I ordered my laptop from Dell. I chose XP Home since it was the cheapest one. Once I got the laptop, the first thing I did was wipe it clean, partition the hard drive, and put Kubuntu and my own legit copy of XP Pro on it.
If I knew I could have gotten money back for Windows, I could have saved myself $80! That's, like, 13/100 of a PS3!

Who told you that Gentoo is user friendly?

"All they do is port the gamecube version, polish it up, and add in the new controls."
;)
That's how Madden games have been made for years... Take what they have, make a few adjustments, slap the current year on it and then set it loose.

Hey, Steve, Apple of the 1980's called. They want their reactions to your OS stealing their ideas back.
That's what you get for using IE.

Of course, I haven't had Firefox 2 crash yet...
</IE Slam; Firefox 2 Advert>
Well, as long as I can continue to surf the internet while on the john, I really don't care who owns the wireless patent.
It was as if thousands of Oreos cried out in terror, and were suddenly silenced...
</obligatory cliche>

Except that none of my half dozen server blades are equipped with any sort of sound card.
:)
Plus, the music would have to be pretty loud to be heard over the jet engine that is their cooling system.

IBM isn't making a console, therefore they can't be winning the console wars.
It is true, however, that they're winning the microchip wars for non-PC gaming.
The Web is old enough to drive, now.

The Y2.007K bug is coming.
Nah.
...I really didn't mean for that to sound gross.

"The idea is that wineries can tell if a wine is authentic without even opening the bottle."
How does that work? If it has to be given a sample, then they would have to open the bottle...
"U.S. Government Prepares For Vista"
I wonder what the DEFCON level is.
"to backup and access data over short and long distances"
But what about medium distances?

These would be referred to as "moonfarts".
Wait... You can do that???
