Even if OSX is immune to all of the Windows viruses out there, a Mac that functions as a proxy or an SMB server (for example) could inadvertently pass those viruses on to Windows machines and infect them. If a naturally immune machine is actively stopping anything that could infect its client Windows machines, then it could save them from damage without itself being at risk to the damage.

I noticed, especially as of 6.10, that Kubuntu is just downright gorgeous. It has that trademark KDE bluish hue to it, while the windows and task bar have a very sleek and shiny look to them. This version of Kubuntu is the first distro (of any OS with a GUI) where I decided I liked the installation default scheme the most. Everything else I have ever used, (and this goes back to Win98 and Mac OS 7, and RedHat 7), I have tweaked dramatically to make it look the way I wanted.

I noticed that most of these improvements will appeal to the multiplayer crowd... which would make sense since Halo 2 also seemed to focus more attention on its multiplayer than on its single player campaign (and that shows because it was panned by critics for it). I'd have to admit that the first one wasn't that great in single player mode, and I never actually played it all the way through... But the multi, it definitely fills the void for console gamers that Unreal Tournament fills for PC gamers.

If I'm reading correctly, you're having internet slowdown issues while using Linux and connecting to DSL internet?

I used to have the same issues. Here's how to fix it:
Don't use local DNS. For some reason, DSL modems (especially of the Actiontec brand) have very slow DNS resolution in non-Windows OS's. Why, exactly, I don't know. I never bothered to research it. It doesn't happen with cable internet.

If you're not sure how to manually specify what DNS server your system is using to resolve names, I wrote a simple little guide on how to fix this some time ago. You can read it here. It explains how it's done in Debian, but Ubuntu is based on Debian, so it should all work exactly the same.

    Hope this helps!

But definitely tighten restrictions on the accounts that the students log in with. You can tighten security to the point where they can't install software or even save files to the hard drive (requiring external media to save their documents, if that's how you want the system to work). You can use Windows Server for managing accounts, but it sounds like overkill in this case (since Windows Server is geared more toward corporate environments, not labs that use only one or two login names).

Preventing access to things like myspace.com can be done with a simple null route in the c:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts file.

And keep the virus scanner running and updating itself at all times!

If you want to restrict their web browsing then you could set up a proxy or a license with something akin to NetNanny. This is also handy for blocking ports so that IM software won't be able to get in or out (or even between), if they find a way to run it.

  22. Kinda similar to APT on Google Gets Slack with Software Updates · · Score: 3, Informative

What they're describing there is like Debian's apt-get, or BSD's portage (also incorporated in Gentoo). Each of those technologies I listed are most commonly used to install packages from a common central repository over the internet (per distro). But, each of them can be configured to retrieve and install packages from a localized server. It's actually a very handy thing to have in large-scale networks because instead of installing and updating packages on each machine over the internet from a remote repository, you just update one machine from the internet and let all the rest of them update from it, thus cutting way back in internet usage and greatly reducing the time needed for the local machines to download and install updates.

Sounds like Slack is a simplified version of all of that.

The major names in the console market never sit idly and just watch their sales; they're always working on the next major step. Even in Windows, we see this...
