Unlike many who have posted here, I actually read the article ;) Here's a great sleeper / not widely publicized feature: NDIS Binary Compatibility a.k.a. "Project Evil". FreeBSD i386 can use binary Ethernet and WLAN network drivers written to the Windows XP NDIS 5.1 specification. It is a little cumbersome to convert a NDIS driver into a FreeBSD Kernel Loadable Module (KLD)

  6. Re:Anti-MS Patent on The New Linux Speed Trick · · Score: 1

You can't patent an idea, you can only patent an implementation. Surely the Windows implementation would differ enough from the Linux one to escape any kind of patent violation. Even if it did violate a patent, do you think Linux as a whole could sue Microsoft in court and win?

  7. A note to the anti-MS zealots on No Magic In A Knight's Tour · · Score: -1, Interesting

Hopefully this comes as a lesson to ALWAYS ALWAYS sanity check ANY USER INPUT, even if it comes in the form of a file that you THINK you know the layout of.

  14. Compare / Contrast on XBox Chip With Legal BIOS · · Score: 1

This chip is pretty much a clone of the much older Matrix / Xodus chip XODUS HOMEPAGE , but without the nicety of not requiring soldering.

The only problem is, to cut costs they ship it without a programmer or any external way to program it at all. This means to program it, you HAVE to boot to it, then flash it using Evolution-X or a similar tool.

The only problem with no external flashing is... what happens if you f**k up a flash? If you can't boot the chip, you can't flash. If you mess up a flash with this chip, you have to just get another one. How annoying is THAT?

Also, it's only 256k, so debug bios's won't work on it. There's also no flash protect (Like the X-Ecutor 2 has), so your chip can be programmed at any time, whether you know it or not. Requires solder AND is only 256k... you get the biggest downsides of Matrix and X-Ecutor 2, but without any of the benefits! For a rundown of current generation 3 modchip, check the reference guide AT XBOX-SCENE.COM. I'd recommend staying away from this one and getting an X-Ecutor 2 lite (flash protect, 1 mbyte flash, easy jumper-based enable/disable)

  18. Irony, or just gross bias? on Linux TCO: Less Than Half The Cost of Windows · · Score: 4, Insightful

What's funny is they'll post TCO stories from LINUX TODAY, but won't post any from MICROSOFT such as this point-by-point comparison found here. How is it FAIR to link LINUX TODAY, but not MICROSOFT? Ahh... more classic Slashdot bias (notice all of the other OS's get real icons, MS get a borg Bill Gates... very mature)

Basically, the LINUX TODAY article is saying the TCP (Total cost to purchase) is equivalent to TCO (Total cost of ownership)... in effect saying that any positives and negatives Windows may have in the software itself has NO value. As other above have said, you can calculate TCO in many different ways. If you want to assign EVERYTHING other than software licensing a VALUE of $0... maybe this article strikes a chord with you.

All I am saying is consider the source!
