    I think this is exactly the problem they're talking about. Not only would OS vendors ALL be liable but anyone who makes any type of network connected software would be as well.

    The linux kids might be happy about MS getting hit for $10K or whatever per IIS hole, but when the same thing starts happening to proFTPd, BIND, sendmail, etc... the shat will really start hitting the fan!

    If such a law does get passed, it will certainly be ruled unenforceable the first time it's tested in court.

    "maybe there's not as many bleeding-edge crazies out there" should read "maybe there's not as many linux users out there". Perhaps they all got sick of linux and moved to the more stable, faster FreeBSD or (gasp) a Microsoft OS.
    Have you linux guys even given Windows XP a fair shot? I know at least 4 die-hard linux people that switched from linux as their DESKTOP OS (they still use it on their servers).

    In a free market system, monopolies NATURALLY result from good business practices. Having a monopoly is NOT illegal. What is illegal is using unfair trade practices to keep others out of the market, thereby extending or maintaining a monopoly. The bell DSL providers are doing better because they provide the service at a lower cost to them, with higher quality service.

    I'd also like to point out that rr.com is doing pretty well for itself, despite being national. Why was it not mentioned?

    You're a moron who doesn't understand that you can't live in your parents basement for the rest of your life. Eventually you're going to have bills to pay, and giving away all of your work won't pay them.

    My comment wasn't about "Open Source won't support you" my comment was about "Not making any money off of your Open Source software wan't support you". Red Hat (tm) is an Open Source based company, and they (in theory at least) make money.

    Send me an IM when your 21st birthday is coming up, I'll buy you a beer. See if your mom will let you borrow the minivan.... geez... talk about your immature comments. Replying to a serious thread with "You're a moron..."

    at 3 AM at Perkins or Dennys... I'd be rich.

    This is THE major problem with Open Source software. Since you can't make money with it, you can't commit yourself to it full time. Therefore you get a whole bunch of people who sorta work on it rather than a real programming team.

    What does this get you? Products like Abiword that, while nice, admit publically that they can't compete.

    What you linux kids need is a micropayment system or SOME kind of way to support your "Forget capitalism, I must give away the product of hours and hour of my work" attitude. If you could make $40K/year while working on your open project, you could do it full time! THEN we'd see some nice word processors, web browsers, etc. for Linux and *BSD. Please don't moderate this down to troll or flaimbait as it raises very real points.

    I had originally said that MPEG4 would kill quicktime and it's bastardly codecs. Interesting that they went this way with it!

    Now I guess the only competition is who can add more worthless bloat to their media player. I think Real is in the lead, with windows media player 2nd and quicktime oddly last. Come on quicktime! We NEED 50 buttons for "download spam" like real player and windows media player have!!

    So not only do you send passwords clear text (telnet) over the wire from work, you BROADCAST OVER THE AIR your password using your cell phone? Does that seem like a good idea? Is there a reason why you can't use remote desktop / terminal services on windows to do your home email, IRC, web browse, anything?

    Didn't you know that you can't use the word "legal" before the words "music downloads" in the United States? The RIAA doesn't believe in fair use, remember. The only legal way to listen to music is to buy a grossly overpriced CD that the actual artist MAYBE gets $0.10 from the sale of, and play it on your non-computer-based CD player.

    ANYONE offering any type of music downloads will eventually get shut down, especially places like emusic that allow you to just download an MP3 (straight into the dirs you have shared on audiogalaxy and gnutella, of course).

    Stop the RIAA before we all have to stop listening to music all together!

    Excellent! This is an exact example of what I was looking for to put into my paper about Linux for my 400 level IFS project. This is what I call the classic "My OS doesn't do it? Well then you don't need it!" argument.

    Also look for linux zealots to use the famous "It's more stable / faster / etc. because I said so" and the widely-known "It's good because it's not Microsoft or Apple.".

    Please allow people to CHOOSE their own OS. If they choose the most popular (over 90%) choice, just LET THEM.

    DivX ;), Windows Media and other MPEG4 based solutions have already killed them. They take less bandwidth and scale from palm-based to near-DVD quality.

    Right now they're only offering the wireless access point and a cardbus card. If you don't have a PCMCIA slot or your laptop doesn't support cardbus, you're boned.

    I assume they'll bring out PCI cards any day now, but it's interesting to do a product launch w/o supporting desktop computers at all!

    This should be enough bandwidth to stream videos without jerks... imagine putting a computer with TV out in your living room and watching all of your ::ahem:: non-pirated / non-porn movies from your computer on your couch!
