    Just picture it: Because of the initial explosion, some metal control panel bends far enough to short the firing mechanism. Kill switches don't do much if the board's shorted on the other side.

    Translation: In a Democrat controlled congress the Democrats could not convince their own people to reject this bill. Thus the bill passed with the help of some Democrats voting for this bill.

    Re-translation: When Congress has little internal oversight, it's easy for the telecom companies to buy votes.

    Agreed, with one modification...

    My grandfather served in the army, and relayed those same phrases to us, with "fouled" in place of "fucked". Kept everyone out of trouble if the CO's wife was around. His is actually my preferred version, as I can repeat it in polite company..

    ....but there are times where nothing fits but "WTF?!?"

    You are of course aware that plugging headphones into a television or even directly into a DVD player also works just fine, right?

    Why do I need a TV when my PC with DVD player 'n' TV tuner card work just fine? In addition, MOST models of TV {and set-top DVD players} in the US don't have built-in 1/8th inch stereo jacks, and many of the models that do, disable the main speaker(s) when something's plugged into said jack.

    I'm aware there's a kludge, yes. It's just irritating having to jump through additional flaming hoops 'cause some kids are fooling with P2P.

    It's not a 'someone'. Microsoft has 80k employees. No doubt some of them would like to use any tool (even a chair) to beat you senseless and some who no doubt would share their source with you without a second though. The fact that Microsoft has enabled the latter is, at least somewhat, commendable.

    It's {arguably} laudable that Microsoft would create these licenses. However, given their present demeanor towards FOSS, the timing of such work in this area could be construed as somewhat suspect.

    A serious company doesn't shy to use the tools at its disposal, even if some simpler folk might find this contradictory upon first sight.

    It's the strategy behind them picking it up now that has us wondering.

    The RIAA is like Hitler for protecting their constitutional rights by suing a business...

    Can you name the section, paragraph, or sentence that enumerates the rights of corporations to sue anyone, please?

    I suppose you are against all laws and governments, since they tell us how life should be lived?

    Only the unjust laws. Remember, kids, jus' because it's a law does NOT make it morally/ethically correct.

    Ok, so reason this out: I can watch a DVD at a volume *I* can hear, being 70% deaf. I'll get noise complaints and tickets from the cops.

    I can watch it on my PC, with headphones. However, since the recording agencies you speak of believe that necessarily removing "copy-protection" is criminal, I can't legally do it. Fair Use Act be darned, says the RIAA.

    So, in your reasonable world, should I choose getting thrown out/going to court for noise violations, or should I break the encryption?

    Protecting the rights of artists is admirable. When the RIAA starts doing that, we might be more convinced.

    Wow. I'd not thought of those Atari 800s for years. I'd have to agree with other posters on LOGO use in teaching; if a student can program in LOGO, then they're already ready for another language.

    Personally, I was bored silly with LOGO and couldn't wait to get home to the ol' Trash-80 Model I Level II Basic. Scary, huh?

    The needs of the one sometimes outweigh the needs of the many. Otherwise you end up with everyone just being a drone in an ant colony.

    If that phrase is utilized in a positive context, yes. Spock was "brought back to life." Many people would like to be revived as such. However, in a negative context, you'd be harder pressed to convince people.

    Try this... Ask your male friends if they think you ALL should also be kicked in the nuts just because someone ELSE in their group liked it.

    BOINC was designed with the purpose of being a meta client, so if the SETI people are going to make this new stuff under a different BOINC project, all you have to do is add it to your clients, and BOINC will download any necessary processing cores.

    I knew about BOINC being a metaclient, as I also run Einstein@home... Just wasn't sure if they'd count it as a different project or not. I remember the switch from the dedicated SETI client a while back...
