Fuck it, it's easier just to AdBlock it. And yeah, I have had the same Google Analytics load delay crap, up until that. Even when it is done properly (it was on a forum I visit, they scrapped it not long after), it still slows everyone down.
One asks:). I'd email you one but you haven't listed it. Perhaps reply to this with it and I can (though I understand if you're unsecure doing so, etc)
Why not? Everybody and their dog seems to include a browser with their software these days. Sure, windows may have started it all, but these days I expect to get a browser included whether I'm downloading porn, spyware, pirated software, or even music. Software to manage music should be no exception.
But what if you are on a phone call while the damned plane is taking off and it switched over to the phones base station? Usually when you roam it tells you but I don't know in this case.
Phones are meant to be switched off during takeoff and landing.
Media Sentry can't download anything to prove it is really a RIAA property. Thanks Comcast.
Unfortunately this doesn't make a scrap of difference. I was reading on here the other day.. or on Whirlpool, an Australian broadband forum, that the Media Sentry-esque companies don't bother attempting to download pieces to 'prove' it's really RIAA property, the fact you're announcing you have it (to the tracker) is all they go on. Unfortunately I can't provide you a link because I don't know where I'd have read it, but personally I have no doubts that this is the case. Oh, the way this was concluded was a student made a program to announce he had a lot of pieces for a lot of torrents, and subsequently get a series of C&D letters about it.
Yup. Hence my sig. I'll make sure to steer clear of any Seagate drives when the time comes up to expand my NAS.
Hmm, nice thinking. This is one of those things where I actually CAN vote with my wallet, seeing as how I'm responsible for a fair amount of HDD purchases a year. Ah well, the last half dozen I bought were Samsung anyway - bad luck Seagate.
Heh, just over 10 years ago (when I was ~8), I went on a plane with two pairs of scissors on my pencil case (in Australia). They were allowed on, but for safety reasons they gave them to Mum before we boarded... How times have changed!
What in the world is that supposed to mean? I see your;) but that doesn't help it make any sense either.
What I'm saying is that your server would've suffered worse downtime from cooking itself than just shutting itself down. If you're at the point where temperature shutdown wants to kick in, you've got bigger problems than some 'downtime' - you're going to have some regardless unless you get on it quick smart.
We are talking about the 'I am willing to help test Slashdot's New Discussion System.', right? It's horrible! I like it the way it is.. I can open a dozen stories, and they DON'T lag my browser out!? What on earth!? Why would anyone want this!
Also the new comment system doesn't work on my Wii. The scrolling bit just takes up the whole screen.:(.
That has been my experience, too. I admin a small bb and was having horrible problems with spam sign ups. CAPTCHAs didn't slow the spammers down at all. I went to a simple question that will be easily known by all of my target audience but probably won't be known by someone half way around the world entering CAPTCHAs for a penny a piece and allowed any spelling that is even close. I haven't had any spammers sign up for a couple years now. That obviously won't work for a major target like YAHOO though.
That's because you introduced a new form field. Simply renaming your old CAPTCHA form field name (in the source code too, obviously) would've done the trick. Most spammers use automated software that doesn't bother (or, work) with anything other than stock standard.
I've seen it around, but with one comment and that already a tag I was kind've surprised. Usually it comes up when someone instructs everyone to do it (using a comment).
No. They come out at least six months later on DVD.
If such movies really don't have any value to you, why do you bother seeking them out, and then spend your time watching them?
Unless it's something I'm really dieing to see, I'll download it then buy it when it eventually comes out on DVD. The cost of going to the cinema is ever-rising where I live, but the quality is also ever-decreasing. It's not stealing if I pay for it..
Why don't you download the freely available movies on (say) archive.org?
Didn't know about it, anything good there you'd recommend? I'm typically into comedies and actions.
Anyway if the software is shitty & overpriced, does that make it OK to steal it? Wouldn't that just drive people into using freeware/open source? Most Slashdot discussion of high-profile open source projects is given to how shit they are - Gimp comes to mind.
I suppose not, but there are many grey areas in the computer world (Didn't you get the memo about not calling it 'stealing'?). If there was a way for me to reliably open/edit.doc files without MS Office, I'd do so. It's not OO.org's fault they have to reverse engineer the formatting (isn't this against the law too now?), and I'm certainly not financially supporting Microsoft to keep their format monopoly. Each to their own, I suppose.
Just admit that you can steal easily and there's likely no direct personal consequences, so you go ahead and do it.
If that's the way you see it, fine. I pay for DVDs which is a lot more than anybody else here would do (not that I'd condemn them for doing so). If you have a problem with it, feel free to go buy more overpriced DVDs to make up for it.
Oh, and you're right with 'stealing is easy'. If I could get (and pay for) TV shows I like in a legal way, I'd do that.. but I can't.. how is it my fault for picking the ONLY option available to me (other than not watching it?).
because they only download movies they wouldn't watch otherwise.
I download movies I wouldn't pay to see at the cinema. If I like it, I buy the DVD.
And shows they watch anyways. For "backup" purposes.
Half of the shows I like aren't broadcast in my country, and if they are, in no particular order.
And computer programs and games they are thinking about getting. For evaluation purposes.
I can't argue with you on this one, but a lot of the community here uses all freeware/open source and has no need to pirate shitty overpriced software.
Maybe if the Pirate Bay is able to make so much money off this, the RIAA/MPAA should get smart and do the same. I'd happily buy the TV shows and movies I download now if there was a legitimate way to pay for them and get them in a format that I actually wanted (Xvid, please). If DVDs didn't have 10 minutes of forced watching at the start, they'd get more sales out of them too. Do you really think the multi-million (billion?) dollar corporations need you here to stand up for them?
I never found the 9V battery to be painful. I used to test them with my tongue all the time. Of course, I was usually only testing them when I thought they might be weak... so...
When I was little, my Dad used to do this to check which was the most charged (most zap = most charged). He used to let me do it, too. I vaquely remember the sensation, and really can't bring myself to feel it again:P

That's fantastic. I assume you didn't get caught?

Why's this tagged "whatcouldpossiblygowrong"?
Based on Australian pricing:
WD 500 GB HDD: $128 (Or: $0.256 per GB)
50 x 4.5 GB DVDs: $16 (So, 225 GB, or $0.072)
If you buy the disks in bulk:
500 x 4.5 GB DVDs: $140 (So, 2, 225, or $0.063)
Doesn't this make DVDs substantially cheaper?
