All over the mac rumor sites there had been (well the conversations pop up ever now and again) conversation about a new PDA. People figured, hey if its in Jaguar then they have to be working on a new PDA, even though Apple has stated they do not want to get back into that world (could be disinformation though).

Personally I think its pretty cool to be able to hand write something (typing can be faster but not for everyone) into any application or draw a quick middle finger to your boss in an email (quicker then ascii art - unless of course you have a repository of that sort of thing).

But hey the first uses of the handwriting recognition on OSX have been at the apple stores. I may be incorrect but the pad that you sign your name into for your credit card receipt may be using it. Heard someone at the NY store talking about the fact that the little signature devices were also using the handwriting recognition software to match up against what your credit card's stripe has on it. If it's true, its a nice real world experiment to tweak out the software.

It will work once or twice, but try telling them that it wasnt you on the 15th time it was billed to your number. You'll be lucky if they dont put the old charges back on your bill.

On a side note, you wouldnt believe the amount of hell you have to go through with the phone company to allow you to keep making these calls. Say you rack up $1000 a month on testing the numbers and such, they will keep turning it off even if you TELL them not to and you are paying them. They then tell you to call a special number that will allow you to keep making these calls, only to find out that next month you have to do the same thing.

The speaker thing is weird though. Since you will be going with a multi speaker setup because of movies, you can afford to spend less then 50% of your budget on speakers. Dont get me wrong, there will be a difference, but you would be surprised with it. I currently use Acoustic Research satellite system. Looking to upgrade soon but they have an impressive range and they sound very tight.

If you plan to listen to a lot of 2 channel music on your system make sure you listen to the speakers in a showroom in both multi channel movie watching mode and 2 channel music mode... you might want to kill the salesman at the end of this deal unless you do this.

about siz months ago i was tracking down info on the star wars trilogy on dvd for a couple big ecommerce sites. the biggest reason in lucas's mind (which no longer holds true), is that he never liked the way dvd movies looked and sounded. he complained that there were to many artifacts, audio had a weird way of sounding, and some problems with audio syncing.

now this was true of a lot of earlier releases on dvd (a big disappointment was 2001). but there are brand spankin' new dvds on the market that have glitches in them (most of the problems i've been seeing and hearing now - are do to rushing the production of the dvd phase)

as for piracy, you can dupe copy protected tapes anyway (for a small one time fee). but he never really clarified himself on what he was going to do with his 'baby' on dvd.

personally, ill take a dvd that is less then perfect (to him), then a herpes-infected vhs tape that people have watched 20 times.

doesnt matter to me though, its not that high on my priority list to pick it up on dvd or vhs... but i guess it would make a good stocking stuffer from someone...
