You might want to hunt the net for the possibility of a class action suit regarding this. A few years ago I received notice of a class action settlement against NationsBank for exactly the same practice. If I hadn't thrown out my bank statements I would have been eligible for a refund of my overdraft fees.

  7. I rode one on Segway Hits the Auction Block · · Score: 5, Informative

The balancing system is generally very forgiving. If you run into a curb or some similar obstacle, it will generally stop forward movement altogether, giving you the choice to climb it or go around it.

I can't speak however for what would happen if you were barreling ahead at full speed and not watching where you are going. The Segway is not a mountain bike, so if you try to abuse it you will get the same results as when you abuse any other piece of machinery. Just as you would pay attention when using a bicycle or a car to the state of the path in front of you, you need to pay attention to what's going on in front of you on a Segway.

Great, so you can opt out of it with a META tag.

However, the Lusers who come to your site and don't see all the purple squiggly lines think your site sucks because it doesn't provide all these cool links.

Therefore, in order to compete with other sites, you need to re-enable that tag.

  10. Shrek was supposedly re-rendered on Could Square Re-Dub the "Final Fantasy" Movie? · · Score: 1

According to Entertainment Weekly, Mike Myers was having a hard time determining the vocal characterizations for Shrek. He changed his mind about how he was going to play Shrek, and as a result the facial renderings had to be changed. It was supposedly a big challenge with Dreamworks because of the cost involved.

I would provide a link, but the EW site is a slow moving piece of crap. I read it in the real world, on paper.

In all this stink about "hurting the artists", I wonder why Napster didn't come along and say "Ok, if you're concerned about the artists, we will send royalties directly to the artists on the same level as what they receive for radio airplay."

I do find it interesting, however, that the RIAA has not proposed this solution either.

I would have no problem using a song-trading service that charged me a royalty fee and sent it directly to the artists. Not the label mind you, as I am not getting any physical product from them, but the artist themselves.

  15. I think you're missing the point on FIRST Robot Competition Wraps Up · · Score: 2

To my understanding, the point of FIRST has not been to monetarily fund the increase in science interest in education nationwide. Rather, the goal has been to get more kids thinking about science the way the majority of them now think about sports.

Dean's position has been that he wants science and engineering to get as much attention as major league sports, that he wants scientists and engineers to be heros and role models to children. If this were to happen, instead of all the kids being out on the basketball court working on their jump shot in the vain hope that they could make it to the NBA, they would be at home working on their homework in the more realistic hope that they could someday invent something of real value.

  17. I know this may be hard to believe.... on Trying To Save HyperCard For Mac OS X · · Score: 1

But not everyone wants to learn how to program assembly for the x86, or C or Pascal for that matter. I know it is probably heresy to say this on Slashdot, but that doesn't make people idiots. They just don't have the aptitude to succeed in programming. It is a skill set some people can grasp while some others can't. I'm sure people would agree that someone like the Dalai Lama is a very intelligent person, but I doubt he could hack code. Hypercard is an extension of the philosophy that the Mac was founded on, that there had to be a way to create a computer that was easy to use. Hypercard was a way for people with limited programming aptitude to create small custom databases for things like recipes, record collections, etc. I had a custom cassette label maker that I used in Hypercard. Hypercard stacks were not intended to be complex things.
