  1. Do it for fun not money! on Starting Your Own Community Driven Website? · · Score: 1

I just started a local community site of my own, after having lived in San Francisco for college I moved back to my small town of Vero Beach, Florida. Unfortunitly I have been unable to find local LAN parties in the area so I put together a small one page site asking people to contact me if interested in having one, well a few people contacted me saying they wished they could help and offering thier skills. With thier help we were able to rebuild the whole site with PHP-Nuke and now have a small but growing community at http://www.verolanparty.com

If your site is really a labor of love and not a idea to make money you will find people out there who want to help. A webdesigner who believes in your idea and community is going to produce a much better site then one in it just for the money. Also one person has even made a sizable donation to us to get us off the ground to go along with my own personal funds I have sunk into it. If it turns into a profitable buisness then good for you, but don't start with that aim. For our site we decided any profit that was made from the party would be donated to charity, I have made sure every person who helps out knows this so we don't have any problems latter.

Also try not to be too specific, a broader community is going to attract more people then one with a very specific topic. Our site is to talk about our LAN party, but we offer to list any party in the Treasure Coast and offer clans their own forum section wether or not they are in the area. Also we discuss any Gamming related news that may affect our users.

Most of all don't expect huge growth at first, we have 18 members after one month of being up. But we just count it as 18 people we did not know before with the same interests.

P.S. Excuse me if my thought process and spelling is a little off today, I am home from work sick.

Sure he probably won't make CEO but otherwise I'm sure he would be more then happy if his career stopped here. Unless there is a Lego Chief Master Builder or Gunnery Builder position I'm not aware of. ;)

I work at a public High School and turn down many donations for computers, the main reason being they are too old, I can't talk about all school systems but anything I am offered is usually much worse then what I currently have and will not support the software I am running.

That said one thing we have looked at is repairing the computers we ourselves throw away and giving them to needy students. Our main hurdle has been finding the manpower to do this. Try contacting local schools and see if any are trying to do something similar, Or just ask them what they think you can do. Asking is alot easyer and more productive then trying to quess what you can do for them.

I finally borrowed one from a friend so I could get the number to call back and cancel but it takes time, and fax spamers don't seem to care what time it is, I get calls at 2am with no regard for the fact I am sleeping.

Most of them marketing faxes, some are from large companies who say they can't figure out were the fax is comming from (I haven't gotten any since my last call so I hope they figured it out), one is from the Nigeria scam. This is crazy, there needs to be a law regarding caller ID on faxes, If I hadn't borrowed a fax machine I would still be unable to call them. It's illigal to fax unsolicited, but I have to pay for the fax machine to find out who it is?

I would change phone numbers but I've had this one for about 6 months now, at first it was not bad but it got 100 times worse since then. Based on some of the faxes I am quessing my number used to belong to a realestate agency.

Most phones I know offer no way to download a page and then store it so you can read it latter without charge. Hopefully this sytem will charge me for actual download time or bandwidth, and not for the time I spend reading it.
