Ok, I admit SOME helium will escape bags right through the material, but everything else can be pumped/compressed right back into on-board tanks as the bags are deflated and mechanically stowed.

As far as escaping gas from bullet-holes and such (something blimps are often subject to) these things would be far too high for collisions or bullets (except for a short period during descent/ascent).

On-board Hydrogen generator powered by the kite itself, maybe?

I always wondered about Faster-then-light travel and all the muck in the universe getting in the way whilst zipping through space.

    Think about it.

That galaxy might be well out of our path when that path is calculated, but where the hell will it be when we are actually passing through that area, and just how, exactly, does our mucking around with time effect our spatial relationship to other celestial bodies, especially since some of them display complex interactions with both time and space?

Wouldn't that galaxy be in a different location in space since it is in a different location in time (assuming it was moving to begin with, as Big Bang Theory suggests)? One would think we would have to map all the trajectories, and not just locations, of damn near every celestial body simply to avoid crashing into them.

But hey, since we could go forward in time, we should also be able to go backward as well, right? If that is the case, it might as well be "Full speed ahead...and pass the bong." Anything goes wrong, you just go back.

But then, I could be wrong. Or could have been...or will be...man, my head hurts.

    Got me thinkin'.

I suppose the "fluctuating flow" problem could be circumvented by using helium bags to get the kites aloft initially, combined with a spooled tether.

When the jet-stream is coming close, the bags are filled and the kite spooled to the proper altitude. Once the jet-stream is sufficient to keep the kite aloft, the bags are deflated and stowed. When the jet-stream is predicted to be moving out of the area, the bags are re-inflated until there is no more reason to keep it aloft, at which time it spooled back in.

  7. Just last night... on Ocean Currents Proposed As Cause of Magnetic Field · · Score: 4, Interesting

Just last night there was an interesting show on television that focused on the subject of magnetic fields associated with planets.

There was an experiment covered in the show that was essentially a large, hollow orb filled with liquid sodium (a substitute for the iron at Earth's outer core. It is impossible to reproduce the pressure and heat of our Earth's guts in such a small scale experiment) which was then spun at a comparatively equal rate to that of Earth. The orb began producing strong magnetic fields.

I somehow doubt that if the same experiment were to be reproduced solely with a thin layer of salt water on the surface (and no sodium inside) that it would produce such strong magnetic fields. That being said, while the thought of Earth's magnetic field being produced solely by the water on the surface is interesting, personally I think it is more then likely a combination of the two factors rather then one alone that produces our protective magnetic field.

In addition, I wonder if the flux in ocean water levels, historically speaking, coincides with the strength and direction of past magnetic fields as recorded in ancient lava flows. If so, this would seem to back up the theory proposed in the article.

If you think about it, this could be a home-run for both Dell and Ubuntu, not to mention the rest of the open-source realm.

Dell and Canonical Ltd. could come to some sort of agreement where the customer service is done by Canonical Ltd. and is pre-paid with the purchase of the of the computer(the service fees charged by Canonical). If Canonical Ltd. determines that the problem is hardware related, the customer is referred to Dell for further service.

Dell could even reimburse Canonical a small sum to offset the inevitable calls that are hardware based, but solved in a few moments without further need of Dell being involved.

Canonical Ltd. comes out smelling like roses, probably with a huge increase in market-share, and Dell washes their hands of most of the CS headaches that they deal with, ones that are mostly the result of problems associated with WINDOWS.
