Has anyone looked at the jobs page at Easel? Well I have, and as of now, they are *NOT* looking for anybody with experience in usability and human-computer interaction. How can they possibily create a User Interface without consulting a usability expert? While it is not impossible for some programmers/coders to understand what makes a good UI design, they still do not know how to conduct usability studies, user evaluation, task analysis, etc...

Say what you will about Microsoft, but they employ numerous people in the usability group. The programming group works very tightly with the UI group. Do you think Windows has a bad UI? Think about what would happen if they did not have a usability group. Do not take my post as pro-Microsoft. My academic background is in Human-Computer Interaction, and I have interviewed for a program manager position in the usability group, so I have experienced how they operate in almost first person. Their usability group is already working on the version of Windows that will come out after the next version.

The fact that they are not looking for HCI folk is extremely disturbing. Having good looking, robust, object-oriented, enter-buzzword-here, widgets is not going to make a good UI.

Perhaps they already have HCI people working for them, and they are not looking to hire any additional personal at this moment. If so, please disregard my rant. :)

    Cheers!

No, as others have pointed out, Simula was the first object oriented programming language. What Alan Kay did however, was invent the term "object oriented". He explored the use of objects within Smalltalk beyond what Simula achieved.

More importantly, Alan Kay introduced the concept of personal computing and media. Previously, computers were considered devices meant to be used only by businesses and corporations. His vision of individuals owning and using computers was quite radical in the late '60s. To this day, some of his visions have still not been achieved, mainly the Dynabook (read his bio).

And yes, he did invent the now ubiquitous overlapping window interface.

Currently, Alan Kay is working on the Squeak programming langauge, which is a variant of Smalltalk. You can check out his page on the Squeak Swiki at http://minnow.cc.gatech.edu/squeak/378

Linux zealots do not want to hear about alternatives. I have a Masters degree in Computer Science with concentration in Human-Computer Interaction. Whenever there is a news story regarding interfaces or usability, I often post my educated comments. Guess what? Most of the times people laugh at my suggestions. Most Linux zealots say "Who needs usability we have QT and GTK widgets that already work. Don't like the" look? Change the window manager." This approach is fundamentally wrong from an HCI standpoint. Anytime I try to explaing why, I just get marked as flamebait. Oh well.

Another issue the irates me is the "Free" issue. Linux zealots the world around chant "Linux is free, Micro$oft is expensive, convert, convert!" They do not understand that for a business to convert OS would require a large amount of money. The price of the OS (~$300) is chump change with respects to the amount lost on user productivity.

Now that I have written this, I await the moderation to mark my post down, and the zealots to start "correcting" my viewpoints.

  13. Piracy on No Star Wars TPM on DVD · · Score: 1
This isn't entirely surprising. VHS tapes can be much more readily copied than DVDs can, so I seriously doubt that piracy is the issue.

Piracy is most definitely an issue. DVDs can be copied without any loss of quality since it is all digital. So a 100th generation copy of a DVD is just as pristine as the master copy.

Ever try to copy a videotape? Even a copy from a master copy is visually inferior. A real pirate (one that makes profit from illegal movies) does not need to worry about losing quality and can provide a product that is identical to the original.

Also due to its digital nature, DVDs can be distributed via the Internet. It is now possible to download TPM in MPEG format from some warez (I hate that word) site. With cable modems and DSL access becoming more accessible, DVD trading will soon become a reality.
