Rewriting 'Blame Canada'
Snaller writes, "Quoting USAToday, The Internet Movie Database reports that Trey Parker will rewrite the lyrics for "Blame Canada," the Oscar-nominated song from the South Park movie. The co-producer of the telecast is quoted as saying that Parker 'will come up with some funny solutions to his own problems.'" Leave it alone, I say. The original got the Oscar nod, not the one they'll perform at the awards.

That's IE3's fault. It doesn't allow the web site to supply HTML tags in text editing fields. I had the same problem under NT4 until I upgraded to IE5.

I agree. Let's not forget the April Fool's joke when they aired the Terrance and Phillip show instead of revealing who Cartman's Mom was. If they can do that to their fans just imagine what they'll do to the establishment. That epsiode was pure genius.

Aha, but you forget that the SP guys can choose not to accept the award, and not play it (and therefore not censor it). This is not a matter of force, it's a matter of choice on either side. And while you speak out about some people not wishing to be offended at an awards ceremony they otherwise wish to watch, you yourself wish not to be offended (perhaps that word is wrong in your case) by articles on a forum you otherwise wish to read. I find that ironic.

Your Working Boy,
Also as a Canadian, I saw this song to be making fun of everything BUT Canada. I think this is a great tribute to how much Canada is NOT america, which if I understand my high school social studies teacher, is one of the defining elements of our national identity.
I know Trey won't change the theme of the song, and anything he does change will make it more funny. Think about it, would these guys pass up the chance to offend millions of people at one time! Trey won't bow to censorship, he'll find a way around it.
Matt BooneABC would happily destroy anything even close to raunchy if they got a chance to let their censors run with it. Remember Mallrats, and what they did to that? Among other things, they severely digitally edited it because some of the imagery was offensive, and cut quite a few lines (and scenes). Check it out at
http://www.viewaskew.com/tv/abcrats/
to see the full extent of their idiocy. I hope Trey comes up with something that is perfectly legal, but features the SP gang flipping off censorship in general, and ABC in particular.
I wish there was a choice that said "Factually Wrong -1" when I mod.
That's what Brian Boitano'd do!
Perhaps they should get Celine Dion to sing the Sheila part... she did say she was retiring to "be a mom" right? After all, Sheila's younger son, Ike, is Canadian... so why not a Canadian Sheila singing "Blame Canada" during the Oscars? Especially since Celine Dion played such a significant role in the Terence & Philip TV-Movie "Not Without My Anus".
This is my opinion and my opinion only. Incidentally, IANAL.
MOO;IANAL.
There used to be a picture linked here.
I know what you mean. Local papers in Canada tried to stir up a fuss about the song being nominated by printing letters from people who were offended and thought the song was racist. In the past we weren't so touchy, heck the song is really making fun of the Americans anyway, yet some people can't let it go.
I think the best person to sing the song would be Anne Murray just because it would be terribly ironic.
Matt & Trey: If you're reading this, don't mess with the song we love it the way it is.
He's "aware" of the ABC censors? Who's to say he's going to be self-censoring it, then? The history and style of the show say that he's going to be making it MORE offensive, not less, given his awareness of the censors. :-)
It's rare that you're presented with a knob whose only two positions are Make History and Flee Your Glorious Destiny.
I realize that television standards are more strict than film, but it just seems wrong to rewrite the song. There may be swearing and profanity, but that's the point. SP:BLU worked because it used the language to expose the hypocrisy about the MPAA film guidelines. Take that away, and the message is lost.

For anybody who followed the problems Trey Parker had in getting the South Park movie accepted with an R rating from the MPAA... you should know that he will come up with a way to subvert the censors. :)
What he said in interviews about the movie was that each time they came to him and said he couldn't do something he would put in something 100x worse. Eventually he would put in something the censors didn't understand and so they accepted it. I bet he will do something similar with Blame Canada...
Josh
You've got to be kidding. I haven't met a single Canadian that was offended in any way by South Park. I doubt there was any grass roots campaign against it.
I read somewhere that they are trying to get a bunch of Canadian celebrities to sing the song...

>Another example: The second Austin Powers movie had the montages where they cut off the last word of a sentence where it would have been profanity, then cut to the start of another sentence with the same or a similar sounding word. Again, it's not the profanity that's funny, it's how it's covered up.
Many moons ago, when dinosaurs roamed the Earth, Martin Mull performed a song on the Tonight Show (this was pre-Leno, so the show didn't suck). Since it was a holiday, the censors had the day off. Therefore, Mull had to self-censor and decided to merely hum the offensive parts.
The song was 90% humming with occassional lyrics thrown in.

As a rule, I usually agree with self-censorship.
Why? Because obscenity is an art form. Just like any other art form, it is often abused or done poorly, and often has to be adjusted for a target audience.
Those who went to the Southpark movie were expecting a great deal of obscenity, and would have been disappointed if they hadn't gotten it from every angle. The point of "Blame Canada" isn't to pummel the audience with obscenity - that was "Uncle Fucker"s job - it is to make fun of the general public's response to many problems. I trust Trey's ability to do that in a way that the Oscar audience can actually apreciate.
Sometimes I hate to admit it, but occasionally I prefer the censored version of some things. My favorite example of this is Insane Clown Posse's "Another Love Song". When God handed out tact, these guys went back for a second helping of obnoxious.

1) I dont see any moral decay. Just becasue stuff is more out in the open does not mean there is more of it.
2) Declining church attendance means NOTHING.Going to church does not mean you are a better person, have better morals, or anything. Personally, I hate going to church. I feel it is a waste of time and that God would prefer people going out and doing good things than sitting, standing, and kneeling in a room falling asleep.
3) The christian religion is not necessarily right. The Christian Right tries to force this religion onto everyone. Personally, I am offended by this attempt. For instance, I think it morally better to use birth control if you do not want a baby. I refuse to give up this right because some people from another religion feel that it is not good for me.
Hey! It was correct when i mentioned it - perhaps someone changed it? :)

To you, it may not be offensive, but to a lot of Canadians, it is...I am one of them, but I'm not one to take offense easily. Or this hour has 22 minutes, who make fun of Americans SO DAMN WELL. Not that it is really all that hard, the USA isn't a real country anyway.
While I totally respect your right to take offence, I also must tell you that you completely missed the entire point of the song. You apparently are unable to recognize sarcasm when you see it, and as such should not be watching a show as full as sarcasm as South Park (And I'm betting you don't and actually pulled this comment out of your a$$ without even examining the lyrics.) The last line redeems the entire song as far as your objections go, showing that the song is actually making fun of people who will blame anything or anyone rather than take responsability for what is in truth at least partially their own fault. The fact of the matter is that they could have substituted any country name for Canada, and the song would have been almost as effective. It wouldn't have been quite as effective because of course Canada is to blame for everything. (Author's Note: for those too ignorant to pick up on it, that was sarcasm and humor, not an actual attack against the country named) I kinda hope they just change the country name in the revised song, and make it Blame America. THAT would be funny, especially when we get to see the response from all the Americans and Canadians who didn't get it in the first place.

My post was out of curiosty. Is SP nerd related? Maybe Im just old school. There are alot of stuff that gets posted that I have No interested in, but when something come up that I don't think is News for nerds, I post something about it. Mostly to find out if it is considered part of the geek culture now, like MP quotes, os ST quotes. Those have been part of geek/nerd culture for many, many years. Now I'm just wondering if SP is geek stuff? Does making a piece of art work become considered geek just because it has profanity in it? If so, that pretty sad. The new "geek culture" is about image and no longer about knowledge.
And I wonder if the guy who posted that If I don't like something, I shouldn't make a post about understands the word "Ironic"?Jeez people, It was an honest post. I was Honestly wondering if SP is geek. I have no problem with SP, in fact I like it.

The confusion comes from deep (cubit magnitude) fisting.
Adam Sandler had this great song called "Ode to My Car" I heard one day on the radio, that roughly went, "Ode to my car, my piece of *honk* car," etc.
:(
:)
By the end of the song, there was as much honking of various types of horns as there was singing. It was great!
I found the CD for it, and it was uncensored! That completely ruined the song.
Anyway, I hope Parker & company use this as an opportunity to censor the song while making fun of the censorship.
I still can't believe that the biggest dig at the MPAA is actually going to have a song aired at the Oscars. That just rules.
However, there's a much more serious ongoing form of censorship: corporate censorship by litigation. The McLibel suit is the most classic example of this, but the attacks on fan sites, parodies (like Negativland - U2 case), artists sites (like Etoy), and the vicious attacks against DeCSS are a much bigger threat to speech. Since words, images, and ideas are treated as property, and corporate reputation is more important than critical investigation, free speech only exists for those with massive legal budgets or absolutely nothing to lose.
I know that I'm preaching to the choir here, but I'd like to know if it would be possible to see federal legislation that penalized SLAPP cases(with extreme prejudice!) and even provided a legal warchest (funded by those who were found guilty of SLAPPs) for those who are accused; I'd like to see it in the context of legislation which removed the 'defend it or lose it' trademark restriction, while affirming the 'first come/first serve' sector-agnostic approach to domain names, and expanding 'fair use' of copyrighted images and texts to more increase protection for fan sites and parodies.
That reminds me of a story I read in one of the big Far Side compliations by Gary Larson.
One day he got an angy call from The Jane Goodall (sp?) Foundation about a Far Side cartoon showing a female gorilla grooming a male gorilla and she's found a blond hair on his back and she's saying something like:
"Another blond hair? You've been hanging around that Jane Goodal tramp, haven't you?"
Mr. Larson called Jane Goodal to apologize for offending her with the cartoon only to find out that no one at The Foundation had bothered to ask her about it; she thaought it was very funny.

Indeed, Orgazmo is quite hilarious. Here in Pittsburgh, it's readily available for rental (and not thrown in with the pornos) at (at least) one local rental store, and it was on some pay cable channel a couple of weeks ago.
It would be nice, though, if more filmmakers simply accepted the NC-17 on mainstream films; if enough of them did this then there would be more of an economic incentive for theaters, rental places, etc. to not blindly shun a film because of the rating. Of course, it'll probably never happen, as the losses would be to high on the first several films to do so.

But, to go on the topic: Blame Canada really expressed what many Americans think about Canada, but it really didn't diss on Canada, but on the USA. I don't see how Canadians can be *that* offended. Besides, it's all marketing. Americans find it funny when people speak about Canada like this so that is how it's done. It sells.

This in contrast with the SP rewrite issue, which involves one group forcing another to not say certain things to a willing third party...an act which will (I believe) result in the second party saying something even more offensive and embarrass the first party in the process (THAT's where the real irony is).
Freedom to speak includes the freedom to not listen.

The funniest one on "South Park" was when Kyle's brother is kidnapped by aliens. When Kyle confronts them, he starts out talking with one or to bleeps. As he continues, they increase in frequency until there is nothing but bleeping. Had this been actual unbleeped swearing, it wouldn't have been near as funny.
Just tell Cartman, don't ask your mother to fsck herself.
Did you know that, this movie was originally namely "(something) from Hell" and the censorship would not let the word "hell" to slip through.
Their solution: "bigger, longer and uncut." is 100 times nastier. I expect that these guys are going to pull something "perfectly legal" but "extremely nasty."
CBS Loses Bid To Claim Domain Name For Nashville Network
An effort by CBS to claim for itself the right to use the Web address www.tnn.com for its The Nashville Network has been rejected by a federal judge in Los Angeles who ruled Tuesday that The Network Network company may continue to use the address. U.S. District Judge Nora M. Manella ruled against CBS's claim that Internet users would confuse the address with The Nashville Network and that without the use of the domain name the company would be put at a "critical disadvantage." Pointing out that Network Network, a computer network consulting group, had used the initials since 1989 and had registered them as a domain name in 1994, Manella commented: "The fact that Nashville missed its opportunity to select the domain name it would now like to have is not sufficient to state a claim of infringement under the federal trademark law, particularly where, as here there can be ... no argument that Network has sought or is now seeking to trade on Nashville's good name." In a statement, Clive Hermann, Network Network's founder, commented: "Simply because they are a big company and very much want something which belongs to us doesn't necessarily mean they are entitled to it. We are not 'cybersquatters.' We have been using both the TNN trademark and the domain name for years without objection, and the Web site has become crucial to our business."

Dude - He's talking about the theme from "Shaft" the 1970's Shaft. That song was around when the guys from Pearl Jam were still in diapers.
Pearl Jam lifted it FROM Issac Hayes.
Welcome to Canada, it's the Maple Leaf state
Canada, oh Canada, it's great!
The people are nice and they speak French, too
If you don't like it, man, you sniff glue
The Great White North, their kilts are plaid
Hosers take off, it's not half bad
I want to be where yaks can run free
Where Royal Mounties can arrest me
Let's go to Canada, let's leave today
They've got trees, and mooses, and sled dogsCanada, oh, Canada, I Sil Vous Plait
Lots of lumber, and lumberjacks, and logs
We all think it's kind of a drag
That you have to go there to get milk in a bag
They say "eh?" instead of "what?" or "duh?"
That's the mighty power of Canada
I want to be where lemmings run into the sea
Where the marmosets can attack me
Let's go to Canada, let's leave today
Canada, oh, Canada, I Sil Vous Plait
Please, please, explain to me
How this all has come to be
We forgot to mention something here
Did we say that William Shatner is a native citizen?
And Slurpees made from venison
That's deer
Let's go to Canada, let's leave today
Canada, oh, Canada, I Sil Vous Plait

But the song is making fun of America not Canada! It's making a joke about how the latest trend in America and American media is to blame everybody else. The less connected to the actual even the better. Canada was just used as a ridiculous example.
It sort of makes me wonder if you understood the point of the whole movie?
I am a Canadian and i don`t find this song rasist or even agains Canadian... and that not what the author intend to do(in my opinion). It's more about to critize American view. That movie is makin fun of American, not canadian... so ppl that think it's a racist song and movie, are mostly ppl that did't take the time to listen to it, or that are too dumb to understand the movie. Oh well sorry for that bad english i forgot to say i was a french canadian. Dataworm( A lazy anonymous coward ).
if its from micro$hit, yes.
This comment is not insightful, and signal 11 does not get their position. They are trying to make money, and they are very up front about it. They don't give a shit about any sort of position that you have read into the movie. Lemmy cation already pointed out that they edited the movie to ensure an R rating from the MPAA, which they did, to make money. Besides, if their success is at all warranted, the new version will be just as effective as the old. They did not get where they are by sucking. I would cite the whole thing with cartmans mom to support the fact that they just go and do what they think is funny. People were pissed about that, and Parker and Stone thought that it was great that they managed to piss people off with their construction paper cartoon.
By the way, they are my favorite kind of celebrity, up for sale and proud of it.
Nerd rage is the funniest rage.
If it is a not an attack to a particular country, then why 'Blame Canada' at the first place? With only lyrics as a mean of communication, how can YOU be so sure what's behind the song writer's hideous mind? Did the song tell you the writer does not mean to attack the country? No. If it does, then does it tell you why choose Canada? You give the writer too much credit for something the writer simply does not deserve. If the writer is screwed because it is incapable of deliver message correctly and unimbiguously, then it is the person's fault.
Now that most of "The Kids in the Hall" are on US sitcoms, I guess that "22 Minutes" gets my vote. Speaking of dead satirists, where did "CodCo" go?
Does it matter whether censorship occurs because of government intervention or because of fear of retribution by the public? The end result is the same, regardless of what you choose to call it.
A truly free society is one in which it is safe to be unpopular. Think about that quote for awhile and reflect on it - because after awhile you'll realize the US isn't "free" in that sense, and neither is 95% of the rest of the people on this planet.
I can't change that - I could try to feed everyone on the planet and give away all my money trying to accomplish that but it would make little difference - the task is too big for me, or even a large group of people like me, to make any impact. The problem is THAT big. So I pick something smaller - because it's big enough to matter and small enough to win.
South Park happens to be one small thing that matters enough, and is small enough, that I can make a difference on, hence my post.
Screw censorship -- what would Brian Boitano do?
Oh sure, the story SAYS it's ABC's fault but I blame those touchy canadians!
It seems a shame to mess with the song. If I were Trey I'd just make liberal use of the "bleep" -- in fact I'd bleep out every other bleeping word weather it needs to be or not -- just to make a point.
Censorship is obscenity.

"Computers are nothing but a perfect illusion of order" -- Iggy Pop
My MP3 ripper seems to have cut out a bit early for whatever reason, but I can't hear anything that should need to be removed. The only thing I hear is the f-word once. Couldn't that just be bleeped? That way they wouln't have to find anouther person to voice it. Because they're going to have a hard time finding someone who can do the voices exactly the same.
Funny you should say this:
:)
I saw an interview with Issac Hayes (who is 'Chef' on South Park) some time ago, about when he was writing that classic, tender love song, 'The Theme From Shaft'.
At some point, one of the lyrics was:
"You know that Shaft is one bad mother-!@#$%^!#.."
He wrote this down and KNEW that there would be no way to get it past the 60's-era censors or the studio. So, he censored himself and created one of the best musical cliches of all time:
"You know that Shaft is one bad mother-...."
"Shut your mouth!"
"But I'm talking about Shaft!"
"We can dig it..."
Sometimes censorship is good!
Slashdot bug. The formatting went back to my default after I previewed. Very annoying. Please moderate down.

"Computers are nothing but a perfect illusion of order" -- Iggy Pop
They could release a censored version that's entirely toothless - let's say they change:
Times have changed, our kids are getting worse
They's won't obey their parents, they just want to fart and curse!
to
Times have changed, our kids are getting bad
They's won't do what I ask them, they just want to fight their Dad.
to provide a particularly lame example :)
Now, that would be selling out. Which I'd actually say they did anyway in cutting it to drop the rating, but that's another matter.
But that's not the only way to rewrite.
Many people seem to be assuming they're going to rewrite to the style I've suggested, but there's nothing saying they can't rewrite so you have something that's entirely clean and innocent but taking a pop at censorship. Seeing as the original probably wouldn't get bradcast uncensored anyway...
Alternatively, they take a pop at censorship by self-censoring but excessively. Rely on the likely dirty minds in the audience and censor perfectly clean original lyrics to make people think of something worse.
For example:
Two little boys had two little toys
Each had a wooden horse
once got censored on a comedy show to:
Two little boys had two little (beep)
Each had a wooden (beep)
and, in the minds of the audience, a perfectly tasteful (if rather cheesy) song by Rolf Harris becomes absolutely deplorable.
Anyway, don't complain too loudly until we see what they do.

b) new animation
c) live performance

I'm a Canadian, That's a Canuck, You're a piss poor poet, And one dumb fuck.
hey, FUCK canada. it's always a-boot you, ain't it?
We Canadians *are* a race; Nietsche's(sp?) race of supermen! Due the harsh living of -40 degree temperatures (during summer, no less!), the constant danger presented from high-velocity low flying hockey pucks, and the only companionship coming from frisky polar bears, Canadians have evolved far beyond anything you Americans hosers will *ever* approach. We are a *higher* life: homo superior canadiana.
But seriously, I am Canadian nationalist, loved the song, think it's great for the crew at South Park to be recognized at this level. I haven't heard any bad Canadian backlash because of the song. All my Canadian friends *love* it, none are insulted by it; in fact, most were saying, "Hey, hoser, South Park's even got a song aboot us, eh?" (this is coming from people in a country that has a national apolelxy everytime Canada is refered to on the American media we watch on our bootleg mini-dishes, hooked to the top of the igloo).

The papers here in Canada thought this was oh so terrible, especially since the song referred to Anne Murray as a bitch.
So a reporter called her up to see what she thought. She thought the song was hilarious.

I guess it didn't hurt Isaac Hayes, because he ended up winning the Best Song Oscar for the theme from "Shaft".

It seems strange that in a story that bitches about censorship, and on a site that has a 'your rights' section, a poster can't question the relevance of an item without being shouted down.
You make it dangerous for anyone to have an opinion that doesn't match your own.
I can only pity you for your inability to percieve and understand the concepts of sarcasm and humor. Let me respond to your questions in order. >If it is a not an attack to a particular country, then why 'Blame Canada' at the first place? While sometimes it may not seem like it, South Park is set in the "Real World." Therefore it would be ludicrous to use an imaginary country in this context. However as you apparently failed to read in my original post, they could just have easily used any country name instead of Canada and been just as effective in getting there message accross, as well as just as humorous. Canada or Mexico were the obvious choices because they are neighbors to the U.S. and as such are obvious targets for the idiocys of the fictional adults. >With only lyrics as a mean of communication, how can YOU be so sure what's behind the song writer's hideous mind? BECAUSE the lyrics make it clear to anyone with half a brain or more. Listen to the last line of the song. Or read it in the above post. Look at the overall context of the song, and the voices within it. Grow a little bit thicker skin and actually examine the evidence before pronouncing judgement. >Did the song tell you the writer does not mean to attack the country? I must admin you are right on this one. Perhaps he meant both to make sarcastic fun of those who choose to find a boogie man instead of taking responsibility and working towards solutions AND attack Canada.... I doubt it, but maybe. >If it does, then does it tell you why choose Canada? As I said before, the song works just as well with any US Neighbor. Why in the world would you expect the song to tell you why Canada was arbitrarily chosen? Perhaps you would like lyrics that say: Who are we going to blame? We've got to find a stooge. Let's play the country game. And put some names in a hat. The one we pull out is the one that we'll blame. Well! It's Canada today though they're really all the same. >You give the writer too much credit for something the writer simply does not deserve. Actually I just gave you too much credit for believing that you would be able to comprehend my post if you couldn't comprehend the song. >If the writer is screwed because it is incapable of deliver message correctly and unimbiguously, then it is the person's fault. hey I missed that.. what happened to her? does anyone have a link? what are they going to do or the sheila brofslovski (sp?) character now?
However, if ABC wants them to change anything else in the song, including "bitch", that's not cool. I mean, the Academy knew the song was "demeaning" to Canadians when they nominated it.
I apologize. Slashdot is sorry that it posted something that didn't interest you, personally. If you would please post your personal preferences, Slashdot will be happy to restrict all future articles to only such things that are entirely within your personal definition of "news for nerds", and "stuff that matters".

All sarcasm aside, does one article about censorship of a South Park song among the technical and philosophical stories that have been posted today really qualify Slashdot for the jab of "Southparkdot"?
'Nerds' have notoriously varied preferences (check the Jargon file for a good description), and Slashdot does a fairly good job of catering to the most prevelant of those preferences (aside from Jon Katz, of course
He would go for the gold, of course! Hence the rewriting. I'm sure Trey will end up kicking an arse or two, just like Brian Boitano would do.

Parker claims that he got the MPAA censors to change the South Park rating down to an R by adding more hysterically filthy material. Even the censor-approved title (South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut) is more crude/disgusting than the milder-yet-censored original title (South Park: All Hell Breaks Loose). With that history, have no fear: Parker surely will come up with an even more raunchy version of Blame Canada and get it aired before the censors realize they've been had.
Can we get a "-1 Wrong" moderation option?
Modify it and you effectively kill it AND compromise your position. Don't do it.
IMHO, Blame Canada was one of the weakest songs in the production, but was chosen because it was the least offensive. Uncle Fukkah was by far my favorite, but there was no possible way that anything short of a total lyrics overhaul would make it prime-time friendly.

Really? In a ficticious universe where country name didn't really matter, it could have use some other country names that are not even close to the real USA, nor a in really existing country. The choice was simple: Money.
> BECAUSE the lyrics make it clear to anyone with half a brain or more. Listen to the last line of the song. Or read it in the above post. Look at the overall context of the song, and the voices within it. Grow a little bit thicker skin and actually examine the evidence before pronouncing

Voices within a text document? It's not Stephen Hawking's computer singing, raflach. Depending on how to sing the song, it can develop into completely different music altogether.
>>If it does, then does it tell you why choose Canada?
>As I said before, the song works just as well with any US Neighbor. Why in the world would you expect the song to tell you why Canada was arbitrarily chosen?
Why not? Surely many Canadians (real or ficticious) will want to know that.
>Perhaps you would like lyrics that say: Who are we going to blame? We've got to find a stooge. Let's play the country game. And put some names in a hat. The one we pull out is the one that we'll blame. Well! It's Canada today though they're really all the same.

Actually, you give yourself too much credit for being able to engage personal attacks without anyone else noticing.
>If the listener is screwed up because he or she is incapable of comprehending the message correctly simply because it is not delivered plainly, it is the listener's fault.
It is the writer's fault for obfuscating the message in hopes of screwing somebody over, then the plan backfired and blame the others as incapable of comprehending the cryptic message, and try to cover up the whole thing as 'humour and sarcasm'.
> ~I don't know why I bother... You'll never figure it out -- Me.

C'mon..they're just kidding. They must be! No one could be THAT stupid to think that the song is really anti-Canadian. Unless of course they just looked at the song title and never bothered to:
(a) Read the lyrics
(b) Watch the movie
(c) Think for even one second
Most likely it was all of the above, or, in my wettest dreams where there are no morons:
(d) They arent completely stupid, and are actually being sarcastic about taking such an obviously sarcastic song seriously.
The entire movie is based on the Canada-haters being IDIOTS, and the Heroes, the boys, stopping their warrantless anti-Canadian drivel. You would have to be seriously fucked up to pay any attention to the movie, or even just the song, and still believe they have anything against Canada.
Aquire some perspective, moron. Where is the danger in being criticized for acting like a whiny little bitch when stories one isn't interested in get posted?

Now that most of "The Kids in the Hall" are on US sitcoms, I guess that "22 Minutes" gets my vote. Speaking of dead satirists, where did "CodCo" go?
You're obviously not watching "22 Minutes" very carefully if you're wondering where "CodCo" went... :)
"22 Minutes" can be hillarious, but I do think it's somewhat in decline. The best segment, by far, is "Talking to Americans," where Rick Mercer goes to Washington DC or various prestigious American universities, and easily tricks diplomats, students, and professors alike into displaying their total ignorance about Canada. "Should the summit between the Prime Minister of Canada and the President of the US be called the 'Gzowski-Clinton Summit' or the 'Clinton-Gzowski Summit'?"
Mercer's rants can also be very funny, and the best regular characters are Babe Bennett, the two old ladies, and Joe Crow. They don't do enough of those wild video-editing jobs anymore; they were usually outstanding.
"22 Minutes" worst offense: too many of their regular characters are too blatantly pushing the cast's political beliefs. I think political satire works best when it makes fun of personality quirks, and specific quotes or actions. The constant bashing of certain individuals and parties for no particular reason becomes tiresome quickly.
But my biggest complaint: I haven't seen international correspondant Tim McMillan in ages. Somehow, I never got tired of hearing his reports of being stuck at Pearson Airport, etc. Bring back Tim!
One more things: don't forget about the other Canadian satire troup, Double Exposure. The stand-up is often quite awful, but the voice-over segments can be brilliant. The sketch commedy can be very good, too. I don't think they're back up to the level they were at when they were on CBC Radio, but they've really improved since they first started on TV.

You can keep Anne Murray. As a Canadian, I am glad that Trey Parker and Matt Stone are going to rewrite the lyrics to a song so blantently offensive to my fellow countrymen. It gross when you think that the Canadian minority in this country have to shudder and hide their faces whenever this song is played. It broke my heart to think that all Americans feel this way about my homeland. It makes me want to bomb the Arquettes and the Baldwins. My beady litle eyes and my flapping head are gald that the creators of South Park are putting an elightened and sensitive message on the issue of the plight of my people. I really don't know what the fuss was all ABOOT! HA HA.

Williams quoted Lili Fini Zanuck who is co-producing the telecast with her husband, Richard, as saying that Parker "will come up with some funny solutions to his own problems
See, the thing is, foul language is not funny in and of itself, only when it has shock value, and that tends to wear out quickly. The comedy comes in making the audience come up with the foul language in their heads on their own.
In fact, that's one problem I had with the movie (the other being I generally don't like musicals)... I like how they bleep out The F-Word on the TV series, and don't bleep out much else, because it makes it more funny when you notice how much else doesn't get bleeped!
Another example: The second Austin Powers movie had the montages where they cut off the last word of a sentence where it would have been profanity, then cut to the start of another sentence with the same or a similar sounding word. Again, it's not the profanity that's funny, it's how it's covered up.
