It's ironic that you would talk about an 'idiot public' while you apparently didn't understand anything I've said. It is not a case of 'some who can't do things responsibly', it is a case of something being dangerous for anyone to do, but most people are either ignorant of the danger or too arrogant to believe it affects them. As for the expense aspect of the laws; they usually come with fines. And I'm quite certain the founding fathers didn't envision many of the laws that we use today, nor did they envision any of the things which made them necessary. They were not omnipotent, your country's blind dogma surrounding the founding fathers and their vague and sweeping statements about law and freedom is absurd.

  17. Re:And the sad part is... on Driver Using Two Cell Phones Gets Year-Long Driving Ban · · Score: 1

Yes, actually. The prevalence of mobile phones and the ignorance of their affect on driving ability, as demonstrated by the GG[...]GP means that if not explicitly legislated against as a dangerous thing to do people will just go ahead and do it until they crash. At which point they'll claim that the phone usage totally wasn't affecting their driving and the other guy just came out of nowhere. Of course that wouldn't stand up in any (sensible) court but by then somebody may already be dead, which kinda defeats the point of having safety laws.

You missed the point. The ban on using mobile phones while driving isn't down to people taking their hands off the wheel, it's because studies have shown that it causes drivers to take their attention away from the road, thereby causing accidents.

In the case of the Linux kernel I don't think that applies, after all the 2.6 kernel lasted many years and it is highly probable that 3.x will now do the same.

But it hasn't been that long since 3.0 was released and now they are already getting close to 3.1. At that rate they'll be up to 4.0 by the end of the year.

Presumably you're thinking of the point releases as decimal fractions, ie. that after 3.9 comes 4.0. It's important to realise that's not the case, the periods in the version number just separate integers, so after 3.9 comes 3.10, then 3.11, 3.12, and so on. In other words there are as many point releases as necessary until a major number increase is appropriate, which as mentioned will probably be 5-10 years away.

I'm a few miles from central London right now. Are your friends/family eyewitnesses or rioters? What evidence did they provide?

Eyewitnesses. If they were rioters they wouldn't be my friends. What evidence did they provide? None. What evidence would they have, why would I demand evidence of things my friends say that they have no reason to lie about? Do you realise what an absurd thing to say that is?

As for the "social welfare system", what experience have you had of it?

I was on Jobseekers Allowance for about 7-8 months around 2 years ago. I'm well aware that it's an unpleasant experience. On the other hand I'm also well aware that beyond the initial financial checks that occur prior to being accepted for JSA the week-to-week tests are laughable at best. It is not a difficult life to live if you can get over the inherent shame that you are living at the hand of others. If the rioters are concerned by shame they certainly hid it well.

People don't want handouts. [...] What people want is a chance to participate freely and safely in society.

So rather than handouts they prefer to steal? Their demonstration of their desire to participate "freely and safely in society" is to riot, destroying the homes and livelihoods of others? Give me a break.

There is no reason available why the rioters did what they did and, rather than draw the obvious conclusion from that, people like you are desperately massaging the facts to fit their own worldview. In the media these last few days they've gone through everything from dependence on welfare to rap music to --oh yes, how could we forget-- racism. None of these things fits the diversity of people rioting or explains why they took the actions they did. Even if there was an element of one of several of these explanations to some of the rioters it changes nothing. They are not being oppressed, the situation of jobs (if they are looking for them) are the same for everyone, the precarious economic situation at national and global levels affects all of us whether you are facing the possibility of cuts to benefits or the loss of a job. Rioting does nothing but make things worse for people. "I'm struggling to make ends meet so I rioted" is no more valid an excuse than "I couldn't get a woman so I raped one". Their behaviour was opportunistic and criminal; they should be treated as criminals.

Finally, simply taking stuff may be a form of protest. If you think the system works for you and you're happy in your environment then you don't destroy it. If you think the system is biased in favour of the already rich, a corrupt upper class who leech more from the country than a single looter with a new TV ever will, then going some tiny way to address the imbalance is one way of getting across your message. If you later make £50 selling the TV, well... that's the purpose in protesting: to improve your lot. For the long term, you may unintentionally spark social change. But at the time it may be that you simply were exhausted and wanted somewhere comfortable to sit on the bus.

What? These aren't people forgotten or abused by society, they're people directly subsidised by it. I don't know if you're British and just on your high horse about the poor starving masses or if you genuinely don't know about/understand that we have a social welfare system here but the idea that this is the only way these people have to improve their lot in life is utter bullshit.

One man's protest is another man's riot. I'm pretty sure, Gaddafi called his protesters rioters too.

Actually no, that's not true. I don't think anyone at all who knows anything about this believes it was a protest. Including the rioters. Let's be clear on this because it seems a lot of (non-British?) commenters seem to think that there was some political motivation behind the riots. There was none. None. There was a protest regarding the shooting of Mark Duggan by the police. Following on from that was a riot that lasted until morning by people not involved in the protest. The next night there was another riot. The next night there were riots in a few other cities on top of London. The first used the protest as an excuse to riot but had no connection to it, the subsequent riots had no pretence whatsoever.

    TLDR:
Nobody was saying "Let's go out and show what we can do unless our voices are heard!". They were saying "Lots of people on the street, let's destroy some shit and loot what we can while the police are occupied".
