  1. Re:Arab Spring on UK Police Arrest 12 Over Facebook Use Inciting Riots · · Score: 1

I have no idea if governments in the Middle East were saying that or not. In any event, we know that, at large part at least, that was not true. Now, unless you're suggesting that all government and media outlets aswell as all eyewitnesses including the rioters themselves (who aren't even pretending to have a cause) are all lying then there is clearly no parallel between these events.

Not too long ago I remember some other governments going after protesters that organized on facebook. How is this any different?

This wasn't a protest. It was a riot. There was no purpose for any of it beyond breaking, burning and stealing.

Not only will this emphatically fail to stop people who want to from spreading information, it will only drive it into more private channels of communication thereby actually denying the authorities a good source of evidence for prosecution.

So with this great plan we get:
    a) Censorship
    b) Still organised rioters
    c) Frustrated legitimate users of social media sites
    d) Destruction of an excellent source of intel and evidence gathering for the police during and after the fact

And if you feel like protesting about it you better not shout too loud. The police have now got water cannons and plastic bullets and I bet they're just itching to use them on somebody.

Greed is ultimately to blame. Authoritarianism just makes it easier to shrug it all off when things go to shit like this.

In any other country where this happened there would be a few mea culpas and some compensation to pay, a few internal enquiries finding failures that were "unfortunate" and "avoidable", but ultimately nobody goes to prison and everybody (but the victims) moves on with nothing having changed. Beyond these theatrics of conscience there is no difference between the Chinese method and that practiced in the West.

Nobody is required to use these new technologies. HTML 3.2 and tables will still work as well as it ever did, so anyone can still do it All that's changed is that there are more advanced capabilities (out of necessity/efficiency requiring more stringent adherence) for those who want or need more. This is inevitable and essential to allow the Internet to grow beyond a collection of multi-coloured fonts on garish backgrounds with a couple of animated GIFs for decoration.

Even then, for those who want the capabilities and elegance of modern technologies without the complexity we have all manner of CMS systems lowering the knowledge bar to allow non-technical users to create visually and technically stunning websites.

I disagree very much with your assertion. The progress of Internet (pseudo-)standards hasn't prevented anyone from creating from creating a website, in the same way that watercolours don't prevent a child playing with finger-paints. Just don't expect your kid's painting to look like a Van Gogh.

I don't really follow comics but as I understand it both DC and Marvel routinely rewrite their universes with "biggest threat evar!" crossover storylines that totally change things so as to make everything that went before moot anyway.
