Choosing the number 60 was a bit extreme and random, but I was trying to emphasize what I am aiming for. It's called shooting for the stars and landing on the moon. I don't know how many words the language would come out to be if/when I start creating it.

One thing that I didn't expect was the stream of very informative posts. Thanks to the people who replied with constructive comments! 118 word toki pona shows that you can do a lot with a little. Simpleton is a bit more extreme than I was aiming for though. (laugh) You don't have to have a concept for everything in a language. Klingon is a language whose words tend to relate to war. Toki pona focuses on "the good things in life."

The idea for a language where one word can have a lot of meanings actually came from studying Japanese. Here are some examples from the Japanese English edict dictionary on Jim Breen's site:

seisan (n) confidence in success; (P)
seisan (n) hydrocyanic (prussic) acid; (P)
seisan (n,vs) exact calculation; squaring of accounts; (P)

    seisan ghastliness; gruesomeness; luridness
    seisan (n) banquet; formal dinner
    seisan (n) celebrant
    seisan (n) Emperor's age

yaru (v5r,vt) (uk) (col) to do; to have sexual intercourse; to kill; to give (to inferiors, animals, etc.); to dispatch (a letter); to despatch; to send; to study; to perform; to play (sports, game); to have (eat, drink, smoke); to row (a boat); to run or operate (a restaurant); (P)
  3. Pizzachish: setting a new standard in languages on Exhaustive Data Compressor Comparison · · Score: 2, Interesting

I have been thinking about creating a new language with about 60 or so words. The idea is that you don't need a lot of words when you can figure out the meaning by context. Strong points are that the language would be very easy to pick up, and you would get that invigorating feeling of talking like a primitive cave man.

As an example of the concept, we have the words walk and run. They are a bit too similar to be worth wasting one of our precious few 60 words. Effectively, one could be dropped with have the other taking on a broader meaning without any real repercussions. The words sit and shit are also fairly similar. When you have a guest over, you can say something like, "Please, shit down." Because of context, it would be all okay. Just remember, there is a difference between shitting on the toilet and shitting in the toilet.

Thank you. You pretty much echoed my thoughts. I wrote an essay a few years ago for a scholarship to go on exchange to Japan. The topic was restricted to the problems of guns. This was because the scholarship was given by a family that had their son die when on exchange to America. The boy was shot when going to a party because he knocked on the door of the wrong house. If you go and ask people who have strict gun control in their country about their thoughts on guns, more often then not they talk about how much more dangerous other countries appear to be because they have guns. They don't rue not being able to hunt or show off their great new gun rack. In the end, guns were just one step towards nuclear weapons. You can make same arguments at different levels for knives, swords, guns, bombs etc. It's all the same. Draw your line where you want, but I know where I'll be drawing mine.

  13. Dvorak is fun! on Is DVORAK Gaining Traction Among Coders? · · Score: 5, Interesting

I have been using Dvorak for years. It has been an interesting mental exercise...but I would not say it is more productive. It's just different.

Some things you should consider before taking the plunge:
    • Dvorak seems to be worse for Japanese. There a lot of words only using one hand. Not to mention it's a pain setting the default layout for Japanese to Dvorak on some OSs.
    • VIM isn't as much fun in Dvorak when you have to switch randomly to QWERTY. For one thing, ":wq" is all done with on one hand.
    • The curly braces feel too far in Dvorak when coding
    • You will need to keep your qwerty skill up. Especially during the learning period.

I also had some unforeseen side-effects occur using Dvorak. When I had first started becoming proficient in it, my QWERTY skill practically disappeared from lack of use. When I had gotten my first web design job, my boss thought I was a computer newbie at first because I was typing so slow and with so little confidence. I didn't want to go mucking changing his keyboard layout so I was stuck between a rock and a hard place. Thank God keyboards have the QWERTY letters on them. (I never thought I would say that.)

On the other hand, my computer is an impenetrable fortress of solitude nowadays. I run a desktop with no icons, Dvorak keyboard layout, Left handed mouse setup, all on top of Japanese Linux. You just try and touch my computer. I recommend you use a 6 foot stick.

To wrap up, I want to say you're a sissy if you actually buy a Dvorak keyboard or dare rearrange the keys. Thank you.
