Personally, I'm sick and tired of the government and the police agencies bitching and complaining that they can't keep up with all this technology stuff. The criminals seem to be figuring it out just fine and they usually don't have forensics training.
It's time for the police departments to start hiring some technology professionals to work on tech related crimes and evidence instead of simply trying to outlay any device they can't open up and read like a book.
Bottom Line: You guys are being paid by the people to know how to deal with this kind of stuff, so DEAL!
Actually, it's kind of both. We (Shaw customers anyways) go through about 3-4 menu options (English/French, phone/internet, sales/inquiries/support), then get put on hold for anywhere between 5 and 30 minutes. After that it's a real person, every time!
Not only that, but usually (definitely not always), the tech guys actually know what they are talking about and they are always local (never India, etc.) If at the end of it no resolution can be found, they'll almost always arrange to have a Tech show up within a week.
All in all, yes we do have it VERY good up here. Now if only we weren't getting hosed for our cell phones:(
I had both experiences, first time it loaded the java app (I guess it uses detection), then when that froze, I refreshed the screen at it gave me the embeded video instead.
As a former High School InfoTech student and current College Programming Student, I really don't find textbooks that useful at all. Truthfully, the only use I ever get out of textbooks (other than reading the questions the teacher's assign) is reading the examples and the using the reference section.
Not only do examples and references exist on the web, but it is SO much easier to use a reference with hyperlinks than to have to jump between pages of a book
If you really need some good ideas I have a list of resourses:
- CodeSyntax - Basis syntax for Java,C,Python,etc
- JavaBat - different levels of Java puzzles (ajax handles compiling/etc, no software required)
- Eddie's Basic Guide to C Programming
- ANSI Dictionary - unbelievably nice ANSI dictionary, fully cross-referenced.
Consider setting up a wiki-book full of information, labs, excersies and tutorials. This is a computer class after all and information should be easy to find without needing to pack yet ANOTHER heavy book around. To make your job easier, you could allow the students to add stuff to the wiki (log activity of course), even setting up a page where they can add useful websites they've found.
True, the states will probably start watching all Russian, keeping tabs on them, recording serial numbers, seizing the laptops of the owners, etc, etc.
Then the next thing you know, the Russians will drive a jeep in instead!
In other news:
Ford has been limited to crash testing only 1% of it's mid class level sedans.
Mozilla has been limited to testing for 1% of possible buffer overflows.
Boeing has been limited to testing 1% of it's aircraft for rust and wear marks.
Drupal has been limited to testing for 1% of reported SQL injection holes.
Now I'm sure that there is a way to toggle this somewheres (god I hope so), but this is REALLY gonna fcuk with internal testing before deploying a site live.
When re-doing a website, I usually host it locally, then connect to it with various computers around the business to ensure that they are all rendering it the same, this would really bring up some cool looking rendering errors once it went public!
Not to mention servers that are both connected to locally and remotely (corporate webmail anyone?) that are going to need yet another item added to the browser detection list to see if the client is connecting locally or remotely (whih should be LOADS of fun)
What pisses me off is that it is IMPOSSIBLE to buy a cd containing the windows installer without a cd key coming with it.
My grandmother's computer needed a reinstall (running slow), but the recovery disk wouldn't work, HP told me to format c:\ as that has been known to fix the problem, after doing that it still didn't work and their response was "You will have to go and purchase
a windows installation disk. I told them I had the cd key, asked for a new OEM disk, but Microsoft isn't letting them burn more copies. I then asked where I can pick up a cheap install disk w/o cd key and they said you can't.
What good is a CD-Key to your customers when they can't reuse it?!?
I love how "Operating System" translates to "System of Exploitation"
I speak french, and while the translation is correct, it still makes no sense...
If we started you on the beer, you'd be so drunk so fast....
"You know Canadian beer is like moonshine." "Hell yes!"
Dude, If we started you on our moonshine, you'd be DEAD!

Sir, we require that you give us information about your device so as we may incarcerate you!
Nope, sorry, I plead the fifth.

MOD PARENT DOWN, I'd do it myself, but no points today :(
Your toaster is slow and full of bugs?
Ahh, but did you see the screen? For all you know he was running linux on his mac!

If at first you don't succeed, REFRESH

Then how would you use the siren in San Andreas?

This is slashdot, I don't think 0 gravity is the problem...

Touché
God Damn, how did I forget about that one?!?
That actually sounds uncomfortable, considering that the ridge pushes towards the center of the ring.
Unless you want your peers to know what cool kind of geek you are.
Wow, there's four words I never though I'd see follow each other...
~ducks~
In that case, try asking a family member of hers (mother/sister preferably) and make bloody sure they don't ask her as it will definitely tip her off.
Maybe he could buy Hans' wife's old ring. I doubt there's much use for it any more, and it doesn't get much creepier.
There, fixed that for you.
I hate it when you people ruin a good joke by stating that it's "in (t)here somewhere" instead of taking to time to actually make the joke.
Then again, this is slashdot, the official slacker's forum.
That's why you bring a blanket and lay down on your back.
DIBS!
