I don't know how it was in the us, but here in Argentina, that was _one_ (just one, and not the most appealing) benefit of cable: no commercials. IIRC, Mtv didn't have any commercials, nor had any other channel, except for ads about other channels owned by the same company or some minutes to advertise about next month's films.
You didn't have a coke or nike commercial on any cable channels, for example (i mean those channels that came only with cable, not air channels)
BS.
You don't pay air tv because it's funded by advertising. When cable came along, one of the advantages was "no commercials", since the service was funded by the bill you pay each month. Now there's advertising even on cable channels (and sometimes a *lot*)... could you tell me why?? I already pay for the service. it hasn't got any better, and it isn't cheap. So what's the excuse for ads on cable?
Can I use tivo to skip cable ads? cool. I don't like to pay for watching ads.
I totally agree. One codes free/open software for many reasons, none of which is a direct compensation. You just can't go around giving something away and later ask for something in return. Not even ask them to do it just for generosity.. if you do that, you're a hypocrite.
While this is a valid point for Americans who can't write correctly in their own language, please keep in mind that there are plenty of non-american slashdot readers, like myself, and English is not our primary language. I usually do my best to avoid grammar and spelling disasters, but hey, give me a break, not everyone Speaks English all day.
how funny, now in the information age you can't own something, but instead you get permission to _use_ it... and this in the same country that bitches on communism and preaches on private property... maybe they meant BigCorp's private property? (please, don't take this as a troll, It's not my intention to insult Americans or anything, I'm just trying to say that it's not about the economic or social system, but about the people who run it.)
very simple. Linux is free and open, and is written by lots of people around the globe, with no financial interests. this was the only way to 'compete' with ms. competing with a commercial OS, is plain stupid. (note that redhat and other big linux corps. were possible only after the development of the linux kernel, the gnu tools, etc. if linus and company wouldn't have done their stuff, companies like that wouldn't exist)
I don't know what you expect to see in a movie like this. I personally loved the movie, and I had a great time watching/listening to it. The soundtrack is great, the animation was great (both 2D and 3D), and the script was good (maybe it's not a literature masterpiece, but what the hell.. it was fun anyway).

my copy of "Good Omens" is in spanish. Terry Pratchett rocks:)
It's Argentina, and sadly, there are lots of nazis here, most of them refugees from WWII, because the local government during the war was (unofficially) on Hitler's side, which is a very bad thing and we get to deal with the results every day. Still, no politician who would confess to be openly nazi woulg get one vote (except for neo-nazi kids and the sort which I could count with my fingers), and remember that here in Argentina everyone has to vote. So I don't see how this relates Argentina to Nazis earning power through democratic elections.
by the way, I agree Castro can be a lot of things, but a fascist is not one of them.

You got to be kidding. I loved LotR, but I really think The Silmarillion is the best book. Of course you have to have read LotR to like The Silmarillion, and you may find it 'hard' because of the amount of names and such, but I think the way in which he managed to create an entire history, some kind of 'bible' of Middle Earth, is amazing. And besides, the elves in The Silmarillion are far cooler than Legolas and the rest in LotR (dont get me wrong, Legolas rocks too, he just has nothing to do near Finrod or Beleg Cuthalion:)
Right.. I'll try to write something to send to local newspapers here in Buenos Aires. Hope they print it.

Yeah, so's 1998 so the last even day before today would be 12/30/1998 Even though roblimo didn't quite *say* it, the idea is that the date has all even *digits* as someone posted before.
I'm sick of this. There are more than enough distros!!! we don't need any more companies making(?) more of the same! we need more companies making apps and stuff FOR Linux.
I am a member of the BALUG (BALUG Argentina Linux User Group), and i know personally at least one of the members of the UYLUG. According to him, they want to have the linux trademark, to give it away to Linus. What else could they do with it anyway?
I wouldn't touch it with a laser pointer.
It's cOjones :)

You know, not everyone of us live in english-speaking countries. Id like to see how you manage to reply in spanish, french or japanese.
Maybe you should stop complaining about spelling and start posting something worth reading.

no, but windows boxes are sold all around the globe and even here in Argentina the situation is pretty much the same as in the US.

the played down roles of women would have been attacked, most likely.
I disagree. I think the part played by Eowyn pretty much covers that.

MP3.com and Napster are "selling" a service (actually, supporting it with ad sales, which ammounts to the same thing)
well.. I use gnapster to download mp3, and I didn't see any ad. In fact, I never loaded Napster's site at all.
while lots of people do, I don't see why I can't use this service.
The files being transferred are the user's responsibility anyway, so all this is just nonsense.
