About a month ago I participated on a Microsoft contest here in Argentina to promote OfficeXP, in which one was supposed to download an.xls file and a.doc file, edit them (change font, add some numbers, stupid stuff like that) and upload them. I didn't get the first prize (a sony cybershot) but I won two 'microsoft officeXP' backpacks (I covered the logo, of course;) which I must say, are really nice.
The interesting part? the files I uploaded where edited with OpenOffice for Linux;-)
And still, it's ridiculous to accuse you of using the bandwidth you PAY FOR up to the last bit. It's absurd to sell you a 512Kbit connection 24/7 and then complain that you do use it 24/7 at full speed.
In fact, they had stated that the linux client would be released in the box with the windoze client and the mac client. Didn't happen. So, they said "sorry, linux client is delayed, will be available for download shortly after the windoze release"
'shortly' has been almost a month so far, and news have it that the coders working on it will be back next week from vacation.. so some of us are still waiting for the darn thing with an useless set of cds on our hands.
The problem here is that Bioware didn't say "ok we'll have it for download as soon as we finish it".. they said "It'll be released simultaneously and in the same box". They couldn't comply. fine, but don't come telling us that you'll have it done shortly after release, then take a month to come up with "coders are on vacation, will get on it pronto". At least a decent status update would be fine, be it by mail, forum, a section in their site, whatever.
Heh, i think i remember once seeing an episode when Superman looks at batman with his x-ray vision, and sees he's Bruce Wayne, and tells him something like "go home bruce" (trying to impress bruce by letting him know that he knew who he was, etc), and later, when superman gets to his appartment and 'changes' into Clark kent, he looks out the window and sees batman on the roof across the street, looking with a pair of binoculars and a smile that said "yeah, i bet now you feel *really* dumb".
Superman is a sissy.. never kills anyone, and when he does, he makes a drama out of it. And besides, it's too much like Captain America.. he's too.. american:) (don't get mad at me.. it's just that i get tired sometimes of watching the us flag on the tv screen like it was a desktop wallpaper or something..)
Batman just plain rocks.. and Alan Grant was did the best scripts for it.
it's unfair to make IE part of the OS, because even if users can install another one, they won't need to. That's unfair competition (I don't know how it's called in the US, in argentina we call it 'competencia desleal'). And no, it doesn't compare to linux bundling bash, because bash (besides from being completely uninstallable), is a tool to interact with basic functions of your OS.. while an Internet Browser isn't in any way a *necessary* piece of software in an OS. Convinient, yes. Necessary, no. Giving IE away with windows (on a separate cd), and not tying it in any way with the OS would be more polite.. but i'm not entirely sure if even that would be fair.
of course, that's just my opinion, IANAL, etc etc and sorry for any grammar or spelling mistakes.. my english is pretty poor, and i'm doing what i can.:)
What if they put in CD-key verification support into BnetD? No one could say that they're circumventing anything, and it would be trivial for anyone with minimum C knowledge to comment that part of the code out at home.
If vivendi is bitching because they don't verify cd keys, they let's do it, add some key verification functions, call them from obvious, commented parts of the code and then maybe they'll understand why it isn't bnetd who they should be after, but the people who are really pirating their games. (price considerations apart...)
Ok, i just havent got to read Guards Guards and Last Hero yet (theyre hard to find here in argentina).
I feel ya on the OT issue;-)
maybe we should get some wizards to help us... anyone got Unseen Universitys phone number?
The dialog would prompt the user to choose whether he/she wants to "open this file from its current location" or "save this file to disk". The file name and extension may be anything the malicious website administrator (or a user having access there) wishes, e.g. README.TXT, index.html, or sample.wav. If the user chooses the first alternative, "open the file from its current location", an.EXE application is actually run without any further dialogs.
it spoofs the filename. what part of it didnt you understand? go read the article.
Seems like MS is trying to (after proposing an insulting 'punishment') look good by proposing 'better' alternatives to the settlement, but in fact they started with a ridiculous proposition, so when they finally agree, it'd still be good for them. I don't think there should be any settlement that could benefit MS in -any- way. to put it in Cpt. Picard's immortal words: "The line must be drawn here! this far! no further!"
well no, but i was one zapping on tv and there was nothing worth seeing... except for that channel with the channel and show list. it clearly displayed a typical windows "*insert_program_name_here* has made an illegal operation and will shut down" or something like that, all with it's "stop" sign and close and details buttons. right between the 3:00AM and 4:00AM shows.
well you got the shoe phone from get smart (the series wasn't sci-fi, but i guess you could use it) ==> cell phones.
the radio watch in dick tracy, (which in the later version came with a camera and screen) ==> recent developments by ibm and co.
counless examples in robotics (lost in space, buck rogers, starwars, etc)
Actually episodes beyond ROTJ -do exist-
I've read the book "Heir to the Empire" which would be like episode 7. Luke gets kidnapped by a woman wich tuned to be the Emperor's spy or something. problem is that because no one knew her except for the emperor, now that he's dead, she lost her power. and she blames luke for that.
and that's only a tiny part of the story.
Really liked the book.
Hmmm that sounds like a monopoly..
what good is it to have more than one studio if they all agree on price, etc?
kinda like DSL providers here. they all agree on a price of about $70 a month for a 256k adsl connection (which is utterly absurd), instead of competing to get more customers.
I really don't care if they do or do not contribute something back. Well, ok, it'd be nice, but I don't mind if they don't. As long as the code stays open, it's ok.
I don't mind the guy next to me having more than me. I just care about me having enough.

ahhh isn't irony just great?
Or like when Sylvester tries to catch Pixie and Dixie! (?)
Darkenite!
we could even go around saying it affects superheroes or something.

I don't think Lobo would appreciate your comment..
and he did kick superman's ass too.

Just say something like what Ian McKellen says.
;)
something like
"Gandalf the Grey is no more. He is Dead. Finished. Out."
This is in fact correct, since he comes back only as Gandalf The White
The problem, as I see it, goes like this:

I recommend Core SDI.
Those people really know what they're doing.
Ok, i got an idea:

I just found one more reason to love opensource
cHALiTO
the company would opt to pull Windows from the market all together, rather than make freely available its Windows source code.
Of course they would. They'd die of embarrasment if they had to show their crappy sourcecode to anyone who could criticize it.

seeya
"million to one chances turn up nine times out of ten"
Wasn't that a quote from Terry Pratchett's "Mort" ?
(while discussing on the chances of anything as absurd as Great A'Tuin actually existing)
Totally agree.. didnt you think Starscream (sp?) was gay?

so now they get free advertising too.

heh, wait till LOTR hits the theatres.
_then_ you'll see freaky fans.
