  4. Bullshit technology on More on DVD-Audio and SACD · · Score: 4, Interesting

This technology is complete, utter bullshit. Regular DVD audio tracks are just as capable of reproducing high fidelity music as this SACD and DVDA crap. DVD originally stood for Digital Versatile Disc. It has the needed capabilities and sound quality to function as the next generation high fidelity sound source.

These greedy bastards just want to suck an extra, uneeded device from us as well as reintroduce copy protection that ignores fair use.

I will ignore those SACDs and DVDAs until they are digitally copyable so that a scratch in my favorite record/song no longer will set me back 15 to 20 bucks.

Certainly, but if we could make a tool that alerts about the most obvious, glaring troubles, that would still be improvements. IIRC, OpenSSH has been shipped with buffer overflows. That should never, ever happen.

Such audit-ware should at least be as good at spotting security flaws as an advanced script kiddie.

However, given your information, audit software could never fully guarantee security. Best effort still usually beats no effort if you qualify what best effort really is, though.

  7. I beg to differ on Windows vs Linux On Security · · Score: 3, Insightful

In fact, pushing all the responsibility down on the user is a very bad way of securing anything. Most poeple care more about functionality than security. We as developers need to pay more attention to finding ways of implementing non-intrusive security. It may include more lines of code, but it will certainly pay off in how many of your users end up screwed by an exploit in YOUR app.

I'm just waiting and hoping for automated code audit for security. That would possibly be the greatest contribution to computer security since encryption!

  8. EU membership makes independence irrelevant? on Internet Censorship In Spain · · Score: 2

Do you think you could argue that Spain's EU membership makes independence for the various old kingdoms in Europe irrelevant? After all, the EU appears to be a guarantee against discrimination, since the lessened importance of borders and national governments would even the odds between different groups within a country?

That being said, I think it is cowardice of the EU not to interfere in some manner in the Batasuna case.

We make our money from two sources - the fee we charge the store/bar/restaurant/whatever (merchant in our terms), and from people who are late on paying their credit card bills. If you pay your bills on time before interest starts running (we offer 40 days of interest free credit) and use your card a lot, you'll save money. Paying with your credit card also has the added bonus that stolen or copied cards will not empty your bank account. If you use your card as a consumer loan - you'll end up spending quite a bit of money on making us ever more profitable.

I spent a bit of time looking for quotes on Microsoft Software in India. I finally found something. Let's say you want to buy Microsoft Office XP Professional. That's 21000 rupies. Convert, and you've got 435 USD - while Microsoft USA think 580 USD is what US customers should pay. If we use the McDonalds scale, we can compare US to Mumbai, India. Mumbai is a large city, so we'll assume it's relatively expensive. In McDonalds in Mumbai - 49 Rupies for a Chicken McGrill value meal. That's about a buck, give or take. You'll need to check your local McDonald's to compare. I bet the India one is about the third the price. So - with all due respect, you appear to be wrong. We could of course cooperate on a more thorough comparative study if you wish.

Mozilla is an excellent project to study. It failed to meet deadlines most of the time. It broke ground.

IMHO, the only reason Mozilla materialized, was the long-term vision of Netscape/AOL-TimeWarner. By sticking to their guns, they can soon cut loose IE technology from their AOL software. It has been a gutsy move, and it appears to be paying off.

I don't think paying the developers would pay off at all - you would rather need a clean application design and let GUI-oriented people deal with the user interaction. In Apache, it is not a problem. In Mozilla, I believe that is exactly what has been done (though I could be wrong..)

Most domestic IT law experts expects Johansen to win. It will be trying for the poor kid, but he will go loose and the USA will be moderately satisfied we at least tried.
