Try some Allen Steele stuff, when I first read one of his books, I thought Heinlein was back. Good, hard science stories, especially his "Near Space" stuff. He has a collection of short stories called "Rude Astronauts" which has has some great shorts like "The Return of Wierd Frank " a classic if ever I have read one.
