I play some guitar with both tab and notes and what you have said is the usual response dissing tab, so i will be rather uncreative and give a variation on the standard reply. (and heh, you got modded up so maybe i'll be as lucky)
Tab is sheet music serve very different purposes, and each have things that they are good at. A lot of comercial tab also includes the notes because of this, and it works well. Sheet music is extremely hard to sightread; on a piano each note on the music corelates with a note on the keyboard, with a guitar each note can be played a variety of ways. Oh, the comment about sheet music not being sight read is not just my newbie prespective, by instructer said it and he is an extremely talented jazz guitarist.
One thing about tab that I think a lot fo people miss is that no one reads tab when they perform. Tab is to write down how the music is played quickly and transfer it to others. There is no sane way to post sheet music on newsgroups, and it also isn't a good way of showing people how to play it. sheet music doesn't even always differentiate between slides and bends and does not natively show alternate tunings.
Oh, I seem to have gotten off track, but no bother. If one were planning on improvising over a piece, they would probably know the piece ahead of time, and key changes aren't that hard to spot in tab either.
Another thing, tab may not make the theory as apparent to the reader, but it removes a layer of complexity and allows the new player to enjoy the music more quickly. This in itself makes it worthwhile to keep tab around.
Why don't we just take screenshots from current movies and post them on our shirts, that way the cameras will be making pirated copies of movies and the MPAA will go sue them all. I would say use song lyrics, but the RIAA is busy suing all of the radio stations: http://www.theonion.com/onion3836/riaa_sues_radio_ stations.html
This sorta reminds me of an idea I had a while ago, but I am not sure whether or not it would work.
Basically, a computer is used to vote, but instead of being recorded electronically, it would print out a card with a bar code, which could then be checked before sticking it into a paper box, and then also could be read mechanically with accuracy. The biggest two problems I can see are the technology infrastructure and that it might increase the time it takes to vote.
but guess what, a pen is that tool that is needed. Pencils cause dust and shavings that are quite detrimental to the electronics around. I think everyone uses the pens now because they are better. They right under liquid, on all sorts of surfaces and at just about any temperature.
If the US were to move to a working electronic voting system, it could very well turn out to be a far superior method. (i.e., allow for the creation of more polling stations so that it wouldn't be so much of a hassle for some people to vote. In detroit there are sometimes very very long lines to get into vote so many people cannot fit it into their lunch hour, and thus don't vote; I would guess that this situation is mirrored many other places)
How hard would it be to hook up a slashbox to the pitch cam? I mean.. that way it would gaurentee that someone would see the drop (how often is it that no one is at slashdot?) and as an added bonus, we are probably the only mass audience nerdy enough to actually enjoy it
there is actually a huge bug in OO that is driving me crazy. We actually own a copy of OfficeXP but the interenet activaiton feature is broken and i do not have the time nor the impulse to deal with microsoft in order to get it activated. (it is at work so i do not want to just hack it)
well, anyway: the bug
tabs and especially underlined tabs!!!
we just purchased a bunch of forms, which are in word perfect format, and we need to be able to read them from openoffice, so the best thing i can do right now is to run word97 over the network, open the wpd, copy and paste it into OO, clean up all the tabs and underlines and spacing etc etc then save it.
i would just use word, but saving it as a word document always adds a shitload of artifacts into the document (little pi's and boxes and such) that are a pain in the ass to get rid of (it is like they are in a text box inlined in the text... extremely hard to delete for some reason/
so, if anyone has any suggestions, i'd like to hear it.
I guess I should probably report this to OO.. eh, i'll do it tomorrow
How difficult would it be to convert TeX fonts into OpenType or whichever? They seem to be quite gorgeous, and very nice in print (pretty good on the screen, and possibly in the conversion there could be some talented souls who would modify them slightly to make the screen legability higher)
I guess I am completely unsure of what license they are under, but isn't all of TeX pretty open?
that last comment caused me to have a brain flash, i am not sure if it good or not, but a doctor who-ish british series about the traveler, a well written for crusher and guinan seems like it would really kick ass, not from an economic standpoint, but just from a geek entertainment value one.

Um, you are a bit mistaken. There are a quite decent number of "material witnesses" being held without any charges and no access to a lawyer. Activists are also sometimes inprisoned at protests, held for a week, then released without ever being charged or arrested.

you need one of the micro distros to do it on one
