You lost me in the first two lines. Two very fuel efficient vehicles, 24.8 and 26mpg huh? If that is true how is it that I drive a pretty standard, not particularly fuel efficient vehicle and mine does 45.5mpg (driven like a loon I might add)?
I think there is a bigger issue of perception going on here if 26mpg is considered very fuel efficient in certain parts of the world. This needs to change, fast.
I quite like it too, of course there are things that bug me about it but there are other things that I quite like.
I do like the new start menu and the new explorer address bar. Just typing the first few letters of any application I want to run is great and beats digging through all programs > accessories > blah > blah to turn sticky keys off after your cat has fallen asleep using the shift key as his pillow
I don't like how it handles networking, it takes far too many levels of gui to see your network connections, the Network and Sharing Center seems largely pointless to me and also one thing that really bugs me is if vista doesn't think it has an internet connection it wont allow you to connect to a vpn... as far as I can tell whether vista thinks it is connected to the internet is governed by the stars or the tides or something because it certainly doesn't reflect the actual staus of the connection.
On balance, I do actually prefer vista. I have got used to it now. If SP1 solves any of my gripes then it will be a clear winner for me over XP.
Feel free to correct me on any of this as maybe it is a preconception about plastics but.... I'm pretty glad cars aren't made of this stuff as it seems it would be a lot less recyclable than using a metal, give it fifty years and we would have landfills full of the stuff.
Now XP, OTOH, boots. And boots. And boots. And boots. As soon as it gets past LILO into "loading windows" the screen flashes blue and the computer restarts. Sometimes it does this for hours on end.
Hey! My XP install did that too.. it got halfway through boot and then.. poof it just restarts itself. I was this at this time I thought an upgrade was in order.
So I install vista business on my work laptop and now after 6 weeks of use it boots, then a nice message appears telling me that vista has had a critical error and will restart in 1 minute.
Now I think you will all agree my computer has gone from being on for 20 seconds between restarts to well over a minute. Clear results that prove Vista is an upgrade... without a shadow of a doubt!

They will not have the forethought, patience, the technical knowledge, and perhaps not even the sobriety to perform a military-grade decommissioning of a laptop.
So according to you all thieves are totally clueless when it comes to computers? I'm sorry but installing a dodgy copy of windows over whatever is on it already isn't exactly rocket science and I'm sure many people (thieves or not) could manage it. Besides look at the knowledge and effort that is require to steal and "clean" a car... I guess if you are into theiving certain items you become an expert pretty quickly... or get caught.
You had me worried for a bit there but I've found a reference http://www.blacks.veriovps.co.uk/content/3328.html although I must say according to Wikipedia's definition- I totally agree, I'm not about to claim that there are no viable alternatives!
In school we were taught that a monopoly is defined by one company holding anywhere upwards of 25% of the market not 100%, if this definition is true then I don't see how you can argue that simply because (relatively very small) competitors exist, that microsoft is not a monopoly.
If you are lucky that may well be the case, however I believe you cannot really know someone until you have lived with them, or at least had regular contact with them in real life. My experience was meeting this girl one summer which turned into a long distance relationship (during which we both thought we were perfect for each other) and then a year later she moved in.... it all fell apart, just because I guess we didn't know each other that well, no matter how long you spend chatting online/on the phone/texting there is no substitute for being around that person and not having the opportunity to log off when you don't want to chat anymore...
Don't get me wrong here.. I am a total believer in the fact that we shouldn't screw up the planet for our own selfish needs.
BUT... The parent has a point, many species have become extint in the past and sometimes because of another species becoming more dominant in its habitiat and either eating them or robbing them of their habitat... this is kind of whats going on here, the difference being is that we don't really NEED to make the Dolphins extint in order for us to survive.
Sorry, but did you just say you can have something be both secure and convenient? I'd love to see an implementation like that because it's never been done in the history of all things.
Well the latch on my bathroom door is both secure and convenient... so I'm gonna have to disagree with you there:)
With the exchange rate as it is I'm almost tempted to buy an ntsc console and buy my games at $60 dollars a time instead of the £50 (thats $102!!!!) that games cost over here in the UK.
I think sadly a more likely application for the poker playing bot would be those machines that mimic a proper casino game -but electronically, now you will be able to sit in a chair all alone in your casino of choice (or maybe at home) and play against 9 computers of varying skill level (maybe higher payouts for harder opponents?) instead of actually having to play against real people.. perish the thought!
I hear that argument all of the time when people comment on various "Africa doesn't have sufficient xyz" type stories... and in this case I have to agree with you, I can't help but think that the figure of 96% of Africans who arn't connected to the web might be very similar to the amount of Africans living in severe poverty..... surely there are much more important things that these people need before we have to worry about the internet. Hell, go back ten years in the UK and not many people were on the net and it didn't do us much harm, some people argue that the internet has brought more harm that good infact (along the same lines as the TV argument) -not something I agree with personally but still. Lets keep things in perspective: provide the basics to as many people as possible and then start worrying about the luxuries.
I understand the problems with censorship but banning racism does not have anything to do with not being democratic.... Indeed it is a fundamental human right to have freedom of expression but another of our rights is not to be discrimated against because of the colour of our skin... racism is against the law in most countries.... all I'm asking is why isn't it 'against the law' on slashdot?
I drive a BMW 3 series (2 litre diesel, 2004) and if we were talking about kg per mile per gallon you might have a point.
But do you really need to cart 8800 pounds around with you everywhere you go?

You mean Anonymeeses right? Or should that be Anonymice?

We should just call it Lignux and forget this argument ever existed. It would save a bunch of storage on the slashdot servers if nothing else.

But could it run Linux?
User: "Hey, My interenet connection is really shitty"
Tech: "Yup thats how it's meant to be, bye!"
User: "But...."
If it crashes, just reboot it.
Thats a shame... no +1 funny modifier for you then!

Yeah but.... do they run Linux?
True, you can deny it. But no matter how many times you do... you will still be wrong.
