  2. Re:Lines of Code on Linux Kernel Surpasses 10 Million Lines of Code · · Score: 1

I would love to see someone develop an OS that followed a similar philosophy of using as little RAM as possible.

PalmOS is the best contemporary example I can think of. When it was initially developed (between 1996-2000) hardware limitations meant that it was difficult to make a significantly more powerful hardware device with the same form factor as the Palm Pilot. (Windows CE devices were significantly more powerful - but also quite a bit bigger and generally with shorter practical battery life in those days) - hence, a whole OS built around running on 16MHz processors and no more than a few MB of storage (all RAM - comprising installed apps, application data, and dynamic allocations), very simple UI, etc.

Of course, in the portable arena, things have changed a lot - hardware's gotten a lot more powerful, to the point where Windows is actually better fitted to the hardware than Palm OS is. And on desktops - you have to bear in mind that when you're hosting terabytes of filesystem data and managing gigabytes of RAM, it's more useful to have the OS use more of that available storage to manage things more effectively, rather than minimize resource usage when the resources are decidedly not in short supply...
