If he is able to get a Fair trial. (This is the United States, our criminal justice system while isn't perfect, isn't so bad off that it cannot be done). There should be enough people for a fair jury, especially due to morally ambiguous issues, whistle blowing to show off abuse vs. just following order. The trial can be used to bring to light rules on how to correctly whistle blow, and force changes in the organizations structures.
My personal view, I think he went too far, while I admire his intentions he crossed the line. However crossing that line means now the court will need to show where that line is.
I expect he will get 10-20 years of prison. Then get hired to work for some political action group.

The extension vs file system property is a trade off case. If I see a.EXE file I expect it to be a binary file. if I see a file which a 755 mod to it. How would I know if it is a binary file vs. a script without looking into it. Renaming a.bat file to a.exe will prevent it from running. A file that is chmod 755 will try to run. So the file extension is actually a good way to know what type of file it is.
I tend to agree, C++ gets its popularity just because you can code normal C in in it, but it does very little to put you in an OO mindset, you can use OO principles if you choose to do so, but thats it. The issue that I have with C++ is the syntax get cluttered with symbols. ->, *,:: , >>, etc... When you are proficient at the language, they make sense, however while learning it, or having to relearn, after a period of inactivity, it isn't like riding a bike... You do forget, and have to relearn it again.

Now they are doing this with the Atom, so we are just adding to the confusion. I just want a simple method to knowing what I am running on and if I need my processor upgraded. That i5 runs faster than the 3 year old i7. If I want to upgrade, I may not want the newest but 1 generation behind. But it is so much harder to figure it out now.

The human condition is to stick with the people you know the best. Trade, is what brings us out of our little world, to talk to other who are not like us. What would happen if we solve world hunger and the scarcity of supplies across the world, we would all cluster in our own little worlds, without having to talk to those folks not like us. Humanity like what is comfortable and safe. If we have all of our needs met, we will just cluster with our particular cliches.

The Utopian future where technology solves our issues, is so 1960's and not modern anymore. Thus Treks vision is outdated. Can we get past racism? and we can probably get past a few of our artificially imposed issues. But to get this Utopian future (Or any Utopian Future) You need a massive buy in from a huge majority (I say over 90%), who are willing to have the same goal.
A common problem that we have, we think, if everyone thinks about the issues the same way that I have then we will be so much better off. But that is the issue, not everyone will see things that same way, and will have different views, and they will be just as insistent that there way is just as good if not better then yours.

US/European Manufacturing cannot have dirt cheap labor, but it still isn't dead. Western Manufacturing is value add manufacturing. While you may pay more per device, your device will have a lower refund rate, or more automation on the line, where product are more constantly completed.
However for the countries who are getting business from just being the cheapest, means once someone can be cheaper than you, then you are out of business, with a population of unskilled -semi-skilled workers out of work, and probably desperate (and that makes them dangerous) and a debt of an expensive infrastructure that hasn't been paid off yet.
Living in upstate NY, I have seen the effect of a manufacturing losses. Where in the 1970-1980's most jobs started to get shipped overseas, because they were cheaper, and the Pre-WWII buildings and infrastructure wasn't adequate. (We can discuss politics too... However that is still open to a lot of debate). Most towns economy was dependent on one large company once that company leaves the town dies. Because the old manufacturing was only about units out. That can be pushed anywhere. Now that US Manufacturing is slowly coming back, it is about more than cost per unit, but other factors as well... And these new manufacturing are no longer so vital to the economy, that the area can survive after it.
Well a good manager, will work with the developer and give them clear deliverables, adequate milestone achievements even if these milestones may not look like much. Then we can give a good estimate.
A Bad manager will toss out a pie in the sky grand vision that does something. So the programmer will need to go back and rework idea over idea, going back and improving on the design.... So this will take a worse case scenario.
The idea of 100% security just doesn't happen... However they are things that everyone can do that will reduce their risk. Biometrics is one method, it isn't 100% but it is better than password use on the average. We have Encryption Standards, we just need to find a way to get the Official Certificate issue, so it can be free, and really prove who you are. There seem from some reason to not push SSH on windows platform, so we are having the many unsecure port issues still... Sure it isn't 100% but I think we can get to a state of good enough.
The classic arcade games are more of an issue of attention, than skill or thinking ahead. Once the AI figured out how the play the game, I bet it can focus and pay attention to the detail, more than a human can.
The point with the style is to reduce extra attention to the limb. If you try to make it look too human like, it fails, if you make it too robotic it fail... There is a middle ground, where they don't try to mimic the look of the limb, but they also don't look too much out of place to draw attention either.
That works too... However depending on the quality of their market research. They may just think that their content is driving people away. If you let them know that you like the site, except for the fact that they are too many add and you choose not to use them. Then you make sure they get the message.

I like seeing real progress in technology. Although, I think the idea of giving an artificial limb a skin color just adds to the uncanny valley. If I were to ever need such an implement, I would ask for a version that would look stylish, however not colored like a hand. It doesn't really fool anyone, and it actually would make someone stare more, vs. a Sliver or Black model. As their brain will not try to figure out why this dead hand is moving.
My thoughts exactly. Being geeky and techy is what you do, but not necessarily who you are. And asking slashdot where most of us has some sort of personality quirk, that in general makes us bad around people, wouldn't make the best advice.
I wouldn't bother with geeky advice (as it will get out of date quickly. "Remember when swapping drives to bend with the knees so you don't pull your back" just doesn't cut it anymore.) just general advice about life, Things like relationships, life expectations, stating things she doesn't need to feel compelled to do after you die.
I expect there may be a little more to this. I think FedEx and Defense Distributed was trying to come up with some contract. And because the long term legality of such actions were questionable, FedEx probably didn't want to commit to such a contract, and probably just refused so if something did happen, they would be on record of being on the same page. I don't see this as a political statement from FedEx, but just making sure they don't get caught in the middle of something hard to get out of.

We have had Cola for generations.... However the health conditions that we blame it for, have been on the rise just recently.
