I expect many people are getting diagnosed with Low T so they can get more bulked up at the gym faster. There is so much talk about an unrealistic body image for women. But the same thing is happening for men. We are expected to have 6 pack abs, Peck mussels that can dance, and arms thicker than your waist. We expect to look like a Greek Statue (while the ancient greeks made their statues, based on an exaggerated body image). While men should look more like that of Roman statues (based on actual body appearances) So we go to the doctor and explain that we have such problems and we get the prescription of T.
Sure there are good reasons too, but I expect a lot of men are getting it where it isn't really needed.
103 Years for a company a good run. I guess that is enough.
The problem with mass layoffs is that it is a really bad strategy. 1. The good employees that you want to keep, will leave sooner than later as to avoid working in uncertain conditions. They will end up at your competitors, helping them grow and prosper.
2. Severe moral drop. Taking risks is how a company grows. When the moral drops from a lot of layoffs especially due to an overactive performance system. Means people will be playing it safe, keeping the status quo.
3. Old Timers will retire, and leave with decades of experience.
4. People will not jump for a new job in a company they may lay them off soon.
5. If the company does need to rehire again in the future, you have a massive overhead of retraining. Turnover cost 150% of an employee's yearly salary. So these layoffs will need to last at least 3 years to be economically viable.
In short I expect that in a decade or so we will be saying good buy to IBM.
From my experience, it isn't Home Schooling vs. Private School vs. Public School. But the level of parental involvement.
Many kids in Public Schools, the parents dump them off to them, as a free day care. Then when they get home, they may just say do your homework, before you can have free time. While not in the realm of abuse or neglect. It puts the child in a disadvantage, as they are not being reinforced with the value of the education. Private schools (Because the parents are paying out of the pocket) are more concerned on the average about the child's performance. They will be more discerning on trends in the grades of the child so they will be pushed to work harder. Home Schooling, is maximum parental involvement. So the child has 1 on 1 education.
However if your child is in even the worse public school, and you are very engaged in the child's education and you as the parent insure that you fill in the gaps that may be missing. While the official school can fill in gaps that you may be missing. For example, my Parents never picked up strong math skills by 6th grade I began to exceed them (Fraction arithmetic/ Beginning algebra) So I needed teachers trained in the topic to teach me the new skill. This type of stuff if were taught at home, would be more glazed over, enough to pass the test, but not done in any detail, as this was a topic my parents were not skilled in.
As well schooling out of the home allows for a larger breadth of education. Even if you have advanced degrees, it doesn't make you an expert in all thing. (Kinda shown in the game show are you smarter then a 5th grader, where smart people with tones of skills still lose the game, because they are so focused on a particular area, and forget some of the details of your early education)
I don't get why we tolerate people that have vices that are actually far more harmful. But an improper use of spelling or grammar, causes people with such an uproar.
My personal hypothesis bases on no facts whatsoever. Is that teachers in the attempt in instill proper grammar and other language skills, actually went to far and caused people to see grammar and language as a moral issue, and not just a skill, to insure that ideas are commonly understood.
Many of these people going after language issues, are often just fighting the natural migration of language where the meaning is well understood and isn't affecting peoples understanding of the information.
While we like making the big company the bad guy. GTAT Executives were the ones who really screwed up. If you are going to have a business relationship with Apple, you better be sure that you are big enough to operate without Apple. It is no secrete that Apple is very fickle when it comes to venders. If you are not giving what Apple wants they will not sit there and take it, they will drop you in an instant. Apple has the resources to drop seemingly vital venders, and rework its products just so they get the deal that they want.
GTAT should have known this, and avoid Apple unless they had the resources to manage without them as well. However they just beefed up their company size to produce something on a mass scale that they haven't before. Just so they can have a chance to win a contract.
If I were a GTAT employee I would be more pissed at the executives for hiring you for a high risk position without letting you know the actual risk.
So you are for a feature that you pay a monthly fee to an ad-block agency that will take the bulk of your fee and pay money for the sites you are visiting. So the web sites that you benefit from visiting (If you don't benefit from it then why are you visiting them?) will be able to get revenue from your you visit, help pay the expense that you are generating by visiting the site and help the people who run the site make money to feed their families.
Because a lot of the stuff we are told was marketing not science.
We take the hypothesis (AKA Educated Guess) of a scientist, and we go with with it, make and sell products off of it, without the rest of the scientific process. By calling this stuff science, and allowing sales and marketing to spew their products as scientifically proven. It the same as Alchemy, Voodoo, Religion or Philosophy where we are basing our new idea off of previous results, and trying to predict future results. This isn't science, it is somewhat effective, however science requires testing of your idea, to see if your guess matches what happens.
However how many times the News spouts science when the scientist just came up with a hypothesis (Worse they call it a Theory) or just give the expected projections before the testing phase, and cling onto projections that are 5 or 6 standard deviations away.
We as humans are good at finding patterns from past history, That is why Religion is strong in our hearts. In many ways this has lead to cultural progress as Religion keeps a larger historical perspective on what has happened, and having people who are professional religious folks who's job is to think about these patterns and work to adjust the system of belief to match current past experiences, is useful. However this isn't science, we can successfully predict past results with the wrong premise. That is why the scientific process is there for, to test these ideas and determine if they work as expected or not.
The left-wing tend to be the group who overreacts when someone says or does something that may not sensitive to someones culture, even if it wasn't insulting.
You can make a lot of money in education, Just as long as you are not in the teachers Union. No this isn't about being Anti-Union. But the fact the Union tries to protect the member, they offer less risk in a teaching career, however as a non-member there is a lot more risk of failure, so you get more reward. So if you want a job and you don't get fired for giving billy the son of the mayor an F because he didn't do his homework all semester, then union protection is important. However if you are willing to risk the politics and have the option of total failure, then you will probably make more money out of it.
Well that is mostly just Zealot Open Source talking there. 1. If they were to make a commercial product out of a Raspberry Pi, they would probably just get a different license for the windows. Pay Microsoft some money for the license and pass the cost in the device. If there is a genuine advantage of using Windows in such a device, then it would probably account for the cost. The neat thing with commercial software, their motivation is based on making money, so if you negotiate a deal you can do almost anything you want. Vs. having to try to negotiate with some Open Source Zealot who hates the idea that you want to make make money. So will not make any deal with you just because of his principals. 2. I have seen more Linux Crashes than Windows crashes in the last 10 year. Just like Linux, if you run good drivers on reliable hardware the system will run.
That said. Windows is still a bad choice for most maker projects. Because Windows is a Desktop OS first. While Linux works much better on embedded platforms. With window you got its GUI that is in the way, while Linux you can get it to boot into your programs custom GUI, or just run headless and do what it needs to do and do it well.
Not to mention that most people live in more humid areas. That and the timing of the article makes it seem very unappealing as it is currently snowing and 12âï
Don't forget the normal voter who just doesn't want to have more taxes. Even if it means that they will pay more for Internet service.
Americans in general, have a distrust of the government. And prefer to have more personal power even if that means they are putting themselves in a disadvantage. But that way it is their mistake in their lives not someone elses.
Most companies don't. If it gets to a point where your program is changing its programming language for its code, chances are the entire workflow process will be evaluated, and will be coded from the start up. If there isn't a change in workflow, then there isn't a good need to change how the program is written, and they will just code the legacy system, in the style of the time.
However your Old COBOL or Fortran system is being migrated to a newer platform, the new workflow means a lot of these cool tricks back then may be so simplified down to a built in language class, so that module that took weeks to perfect may be just as easy as x.dothis()
Or if you do go back in time, your grandfather will kill you first, so he can tell those tales at nauseum on how he fought off a mad man at nauseum, which enrages you so much that you just want to go back in time and kill him.
Many high end equipment does have fairly large capacitors to allow enough power off time to do a clean power off. I remember back in the 1990's some PC Centric folks were looking in a Sun Workstation they were surprised about all the large capacitors that were on the motherboard. In short it gives the system enough time finish its final calculation before the power goes out.
In terms of brain implants, we are at the Peg-Leg level of sophistication. We can offer them a solution that will help with some problems, but it isn't a case where we can solve all the problems.
So something that detects that a seizure will happen then does a pulse to stop it. Will help stop the seizure, but not cure all the problems, as well it may bring in some side effects, because the brain so so complicated.
However for some reason we have been polarized to a point that we really can't judge tradeoffs any more. We want a 100% cure. We want our food to be 100% healthy and fill us up, and meet the taste we are craving, we want technology to Run Fast, Use little power, and be tiny. We want our contractors to be Cheap, Fast and Good.
The fact that we live in this imperfect world, seems to have a lot of people paralyzed to the idea of progress where progress will sometimes means there will be a tradeoff.
Perhaps not as well. If people are following the coding standards for the organization then the code for the most part looks far more similar.
When I am working with a development team, I will tend to adjust my unique style to better match what everyone else is doing. Even if it means doing coding methods that I will normally disagree with.
If the code tends to use a bunch of Goto's instead of Procedures or classes. I will use those GOTO not for my benefit, but for people who will maintain my code later on, so they won't have to change their mindset and debugging strategies to see what the program is doing to do future corrections.
I will go full Object Oriented if the group of people that I am working with do their coding full OO.
My personal style would be more procedural, than OO. Not due to lack of knowledge or not realizing OO advantages and disadvantages. But if I am to code on my own, I code in the way that My Mind handles the requirements, and how I feel would be easier for me to change and fix my code in the future.
I think this method is best for ID based on personal code, vs group corporate code, where a lot of your particular style is hidden.
In terms of a server OS, Linux has good security. The lock screen on X11 in order to keep other out of your logged in session, workstation/desktop usage. It isn't ideal.
the NT Alt-Ctrl-Del is a Workstation thing. Its security is low level to prevent applications from accessing it.
Ethics and Morals are based on the cultural norms.
Taking a bribe is consider corruption in our culture. In another it may be considered payment for expedited services. In America we Tip our servers, the size of our tips are based on what we figure was the quality of the service. This motivates the server to try to exceed expectation. The only difference between this and a bribe is payment after service is performed and not before.
There are the obvious fads. But there are plenty of times where a Fad can endure vs just go away, sometimes it could just be something disruptive that changes its path.
We had the rails fad. Ruby on Rails got rather popular in the early 10's then it just kinda faded away. Technically it was fine, however mobile apps development took over which made Web Applications development seem less popular, so the existing Web Apps were just maintained with PHP, JSP or ASP.NET. The need to try to make an ultra rich interface for web applications somewhat paused, when they realize they just need to focus on the PC, and no longer put effort in Mobile HTML with the new input methods.
OS/2 Vs. Windows 95. There was a lot of buzz around OS/2 Warp replacing Windows 3.1... However IBM really bombed its marketing while Microsoft did a stellar job.
During our careers I am sure the best of us, had jumped onto the wrong fad, or made a bad choice. Then the next time you didn't change your criteria and you made a good choice.
However the real question should be. As the parent pointed out What does it do, and will it actually benefit me/my organization.
There is nothing simple about ethics with international business. Things that ethically right in one culture can be a huge issue in an other. Many European countries have laws about Hate speech. The US has against with Pedophilia. In some countries bribes are just part of doing business. In others it is quite illegal. Countries will tax you for things that other countries would consider as overstepping bounds. Some countries lets things go by without legal controls that others find monstrous.
If you are going to be doing international business, you need to be sensitive to your own ideals, as well as the ideals of your new customer base. Our American Ideals of nearly full freedom of speech, vs. Turkey ideals of limited speech. Are clashing. So if Zuckerberg just said no. They will not operate in Turkey, and the users will be loss of a medium to spread the areas of free speech that they do enjoy. If Zuckerberg agrees then Facebook stays operational, and while taking heat from the culture who doesn't like to see any speech censored, is allowing the culture to have better tools to share the free speech that they are entitled too.
Especially now that most of the data is transmitted digitally. This was a necessary evil before digital distribution, because an analog signal took up a full bandwidth having too much will cause interference. With the data being distributed digitally a lot of competition can go across the same pipeline without affecting the other. TCP/IP is kinda neat that way.
