Well more to the point. Does it really bring in revenue, for the cop who is doing traffic control?
I mean we have a Cop perhaps in a traffic trap for an hour. To catch 1 or 2 individuals.
The ticket may bring in $200-$400 a pop. If you figure the cops salary, it looks good. However if the person fights the ticket, there is the judges time, and the staff at the court building, the people who handle the payments, and letters.... In general a lot of people in the "Justice" system that gets paid off just for traffic. If we have automated cars, that means the roads are safer, we can deal with a smaller police force, who will focus more on malicious crimes, and less on the technical crimes.
Being the actual point of the second amendment was to allow the citizens to raise arms against their own government or an other government. (They just completed a revolution from their mother government, the founders heads were filled with a lot of idealism, and a lot of distrust in big organizations) So they created the second amendment as a way to insure the citizens feel free and safe.
Being that the United States is one of the most stable country in the world. The idea of a violent revolution is a rather remote aspect, sure there are some fringe groups, but none have major public opinion, and prefer to work with our current system of government then actually fight with arms against it. Means right now in history the Gun rules seem outdated and leaves us open to citizens being danger to themselves and others because of the gun.
Most people do not think ahead in such abstract reasons, so the pro-gun supporters try to bring up short term threats on trying to show that the gun is useful today and now, as to not have the citizenry get lazy on their rights, and sign away their freedom.
I myself do not own a gun, nor do I have any plans on buying one soon... However the fact that I could get one without having to go threw government approval process to make sure that my ideals match the governments, is a comforting freedom.
A broken clip could cause the mirror to fall off during transit. Hitting the relatively hard steering wheel or dashboard, causing it to shatter and glass shooing up into the drivers eyes. causing an accident.
However the engineer, is often overly cautious, to the extreme, and sometimes have a fit if they don't get there way, and having engineers over exaggerating to get their point across isn't unheard of.
The words seem to be "Power Words" terms that get people to agree without only on an emotional basis. So an engineer can use them to get his way, without really backing himself up. And if his idea gets rejected and the media gets their hands on the email, there is a huge PR problem, where the email is taken out of contexts.
Lets just say this discussion was about the vanity mirror, the engineer wants it to be bolted on, vs. a plastic clip. His design is superior because the bolts will last longer. However other engineers find the plastic clip is good enough, and looks better. The engineer who proposes the bolts may fill a bit annoyed that they went with an other design. So he may complain to protest his point, and over emphasize the risks of the plastic clips, and toss in a few of those power words. To try to get his way. Then a few years down the line, there is an unrelated problem with the car, and there is a law suit. They find emails from an engineer discussing doom and gloom. Now the media will have a field day with that. Even though it was unrelated.
The real issue, is picking the right cloud service for your organization. Some you will have great deal of control, others they do everything for you. You can also setup the contract that they are responsible for such data and if it goes away they need to compensate for the loss.
There is an impression that each of us will make a better system admin then anyone else. However in real life if we run our own servers we run into issues where you don't have the budget for the remote offsite location. You needed to hold off on those new drives to replace the failing ones. Sure cloud systems are open to vulnerabilities and human errors. However being it is suppose to be the cloud company key job to keep it running, they should have the budget to keep in business, also with a proper contract you can squarely blame them for any mistake.
It is harder then it seems. There are a lot of Woman who just don't want to go into technology. For many reasons. 1. Culturally: Woman should have jobs working directly with people, Men should have jobs avoiding people.
2. Geeky Culture: A lot of it is very male centrist, the idea of going to technology means you will need to interact with a culture many do not find appealing.
3. Catch 22: Woman do not want to go into technology because their isn't enough women in technology.
4. Peer pressure: If a woman shows an interest going to technology, their friends will try to dissuade them.
JavaScript has a lot of faults... However there isn't a good standard to replace it. The Core Browser Engines. Trident (IE), Mozilla (FireFox), and WebKit (Chrome/Safari) They all support Javascript. Others are plugins that may work in some but not all.
Alternatives would be not using Web Pages for development. Which sounds good, until you get into problems to platform compatibility, deployment, upgrades. Or you got middle approaches such as Flash, Active X, and Java Applets, that have their own issues.
Until we can get the three core Engines to support an other uniformed language. we will be stuck with Javascript.
Techs who have been around before the year 2000 tend to have this policy. Upgrade only after it has been proven. This is a lesson they have learned because especially during the late 90's. Patches and Upgrades, didn't go in smoothly and often caused more problems then they fixed. Today patching and upgrades tend to go in far more smoothly, however we still want to be sure that it is proven to work before we are the first to jump in.
Now this means our systems are also more vulnerable for a longer time, and may need to have a secondary means to protect yourself from the system.
The Price isn't what is making people choose the PS4 over the XBox. But the fact you can access internet services such as Netflix without having to pay a monthly fee, to access data you are already paying for.
The PS4 gives you Netflix without PlayStation points, but you need XBox Live Gold to get get Netflix.
No Xbox live gold isn't that expensive... However if you need to cramp down on a budget, it is one of the first things you will stop paying for.
Well the Snowden leaks messed up American Credibility. For the most part he leaked stuff that everyone knew that we were doing it anyways. But because of the leak it gave government politicians something tangible to grab on and scold the US for, and pressure public opinion away from the US.
Russia is doing this too, with its citizens having proof of American bad guys, they can play to the paranoia that was already there, and use this to push their own objective. As America doesn't have a moral stance of their argument.
If they don't want to support the game, They should just package the server as a closed source code and sell it to anyone who wants to support old games.
No need to scare the company by saying it needs to be free and open source.
Who in their right mind would make a deep sea research submarine out of wood, which has holes in it! I mean we are in the 21st century. We rarely make boats out of wood anymore, We defiantly don't make million dollar research devices out of wood, and if they did, they would use high quality wood, not ones with holes in it!
Ah the Slashdot motto! "DON'T CHANGE ANYTHING" any changes will put my mind into shock.
In short, if Google doesn't change their interface every now and then, competitors will come up and dethrone them. Like Google did with Hotmail and Yahoo Mail.
Is there a risk of making these changes, yes. Sometimes people will not like the change and fall back to what they want. But other times if done properly, it keeps the curve up, so their competitors are trying to catch up to them.
Legacy code is one part. Non-Computer Scientists in general do not like to write code they much rather adjust an existing program and go on. Performance is the next part. The newer languages that are considered easy to code: Java,.NET, Python, Perl... Are all interpreted languages and run slower. If you are going to be doing a bunch of number crunching you really want your computer to be focusing on running the program. Not interpreting your command then running what you said.
While the original keyboard is gone, the new think pads keyboard is just as good. I have swapped from one to the other without noticing. Unless you actually type on the key bevel? I put my hand on the home row and then look at the screen, I don't even realize that I am typing on a Chiclets keyboard.
So you do every IT related job at an expert level? There isn't anyone who can do all the jobs required in IT and do like a full expert. There are somethings that you don't do often enough and really should get help with... Now if you can't get help, most people can figure out how to do it one way or an other... However the solution may be sub optimal. I setup an SSL website once every 2 or 3 years. Normally I will have access to a Decent Client/Server team who setups the OS and install the software that is required. Where I can focus on my application insuring it is running efficiently, and bug free.
The problem is that we are looking at problems and trying to find an easy fix to them! If we ban or stop this one thing than it will all be better.
Sure we know if Calories in > Calories out = fat. However counting calories in real life is difficult. Also they are foods that are Calorie dense but also have nutrients and other stuff that makes us feel satisfied longer so we don't eat as much. Then we have "Diet" foods low in calories, but low in nutrients too, so after we eat it, we get hungry again and again, so we eat more calories trying to get the nutrients that we are really craving.
I would also point out that we are in a global depression. Sure the economy may be improving but the individuals world wide, are feeling depressed and not empowered. This lack of empowerment makes us more opt to stay at home and just survive and not take any risks, as the system is increasingly out to prevent us from taking risks. When we are not going out taking risks, we are not out and moving thus we burn less calories per day.
I am not a systems administrator (I am a software designer, when I do administration it requires a lot of trail and error.), I do however have to setup an SSL site once every few years. And because of the rarity of this action this is one of those jobs that are difficult to do, compared to other jobs. Sure if your web browser is installed via an Apt-get you are good. However there are times where you need to install it manually, and then you fight and tinker until SSL works, when it does work, your tendency is not to tinker with it anymore. The issue with Heart Bleed is that it effects open SSL, one of the trouble maker libraries, that require more then just the Basic make config & make & make install.
Now there are a lot of sites setup my armature system admins, many who are less technical then I am, who will get it going and let it run. There isn't any enterprise architecture, the web site is running on a single PC with a single hard drive, chances are the hard drive had already died, and the site is just running from active memory.
Well there are other laptops out there. But if you want good brands you either have to go with a Macbook or Thinkpad. The think pads design is Classic, You can have one for years and it will still look like the new models for the most part. However if you get a Macbook, every generation will look newer and your old model will show.
For the rule of thumb is to support cross platform when it is easy to do so.
Having forks for each platform can kill your business if you need to put in updates or add new features. Linux also has a lot of different distributions where there are different sets of "Standard" settings, which sometimes will cause issues, if you say get it to work in Ubuntu and the person who bought your product has Slackware.
I am trying to figure out if someone did give me their resume on a MÃbius strip, if I should hire him for his creativity, or decline him, because he will nitpick on every little technicality. And probably not be a team player.
Doctor 1: Death by Cybermen who cause him to die from exhaustion.
If he didn't regenerate the Robots would have won!

Playing devils advocate here
