While I have a tendency on Slashdot to post conservative posts. (I try not to be crazy conservative though). However I think it the governments responsibility to offer us a high speed Internet Infrastructure, and not the Cable, and Telephone industry who is in essence competing against itself.
Companies nowadays don't want to get involved in big infrastructural projects, such as laying fiber to every home. Because of a lot of reasons. But much like Power it is becoming a situation that the internet is needed to function in modern society.
Is it big pharma pushing doctors to prescribe more? Most likely, there are so many regulations and public pressure to lower the costs of their drugs, so they will make up the difference with increase volume. I mean we have TV adds full of commercials pushing superscription medicine, even if 80% of the commercial is about the side effects, to cure a minor condition.
Is it doctors too lazy/busy to do a proper diagnosis? Lazy, no. Over worked yes. In an attempt to try to get health care cheaper doctors usually take the brunt of the cost cuttings, insurance companies pressuring them to lower their rates, so they make it up by double/triple booking patients. Because they cannot afford to see 12 patients a day at 45 minutes apiece.
Is it mothers, fathers and teachers who seek to explain bad behavior and poor discipline (which is largely their fault) on medical conditions? Not necessarily their fault, society has changed the role of the traditional family. With both parents working full time, or a single parent family the norm, it makes it quite difficult to raise their children. Teachers have their hands tied behind their back on what they can do to discipline children. Then you combine media fear about strangers wandering suburban streets waiting to abduct your child, so they try to keep them safe by locking them indoors where they can only play indoor, without burning off the energy that kids have. Then if you kid is allowed outside and gets hurt or worse caused an other kid to get hurt, you are under pressure to explain yourself.
We have gotten to litigious in many areas, while the intent is honorable, it creates side effects much like the drugs do, that is sometimes worse then the cure they are trying to fix.
You can jump up and down and complain how greedy these people are, but that is the problem if you take people/corporations in the Macro sense, their main trends will be following going towards greed. However each individual has virtues too, however they are quite varied, and tends to get washed out when you calculate the overall trend.
Doesn't anyone get the irony of a guy name Maxwell making Coffee?
The best part of waking up is having Maxwell make your cup. Granted Maxwell coffee isn't the best coffee but still most of you growing up got the stupid song in your head.

Math the media like to show that really doesn't mean much. 1. Well not too many people were studying computer science back in 1913. 2. Computer Science didn't really become a popular major until the 1980's 3. General Population growth and increase in literacy world wide. 4. Growth to IT Demand in large countries India and China.
So yes, while the number is right, it isn't really that useful. I much rather see the breakdown of demographics of those three days and track their professional changes over a period of time.
Ah Ackbar, the true hero to end the empire. Unlike Luke, who abandon his post and joined with the enemy. Or Solo and Lieha who, just barely achieved their mission by turning a cloak and dagger mission to a full frontal assault, killing many civilians.
Ackbar, caught the trap quickly and professionally organized his troops to hold the line until he had the tactical advantage.
Well if you are going to be a professional gamer, being fat may be at a disadvantage. When you need your arms to twitch and type and move a pointer at split second speed, you can't have your arms bogged down by an extra Kilogram of fat.
Now for the average gamer. You could be 300kg and still play the game decently. However if you are professionally and need to beat times by split seconds then you better be in better shape, as well if you are going to be playing all the time, you need some endurance.
Now gammers if they are so involved in the game that they are not eating, I bet they can stay fairly thin.
Isn't a coolant leak, the reason to evacuate the engineering bay in ST:TNG? It is almost like they didn't want the engineers to come up with a plot resolving fix, just yet.
Well Wolfenstein 3d wasn't the first either, but it was on that set the bar. For the model of the 3d Shoot-em-ups. Which doom then used with some more advanced technology that made it move a little smoother and a little more interesting game.
I think TFA over did the multi-player. As you needed 2 computers next to each other over a Null-Modem Cable, so most people didn't play multi-player.
Part of the problem is the fact that Europe has been trying to block free speech on it. I am not supporting racist or care for their ideals. But blocking out hate speech is more dangerous then trying to stop it. Why? Because the hate speech goes underground, where there is no sense of the scope of the problem. So the government doesn't understand how big the problem is and unable to do an appropriate protection of the hated groups. Secondly there isn't a counter dialog going on to discredit the hate logic. So people get this feed of hate in private and told that it is taboo, so they keep it quite, however there isn't anyone pointing out the flaw in their reasoning. So they can create more people who hate.
Free speech is necessary, however it isn't safe or easy.
Well I think it might be more based on the Web Technology available. 2 years ago, HTML 5 was quite new and the browser support was kinda spotty, so if you were to make rich web applications you needed stuff like Flash, to get the similar effect.
That said, there is still a boat load of Rich Web stuff you could have done with HTML 4 and CSS/Javascript. However you spent more time figuring out how to do a little trick then actually working on your app.
Which is actually why it makes it a stupid law. Its only benefit would be able to charge someone with more fines and problems when they have already performed an illegal act.
People: We have a Gun that is undetectable by normal means. Government: We can't have that because people who want to hurt people with guns can get past detection. So lets make a law to fix that. People: So If I wanted to hurt someone with a gun, which is already breaking a bunch of laws, I will just need to break one more. Government: Thats right, and it will save you money because we will not need to invest into finding ways to track your gun.
Why doesn't the government add an extra $100 fine for performing an illegal activity.
Which is very ironic because Firefox popularity came from the fact that it was a small light weight browser. Then they kept on adding crap to it, so it is nearly as bloated as IE is. While Chrome has been taking the lime light as the small lightweight browser.
Well it would make sense for using MMORG for communication especially for communicating violent activities. As similar activities are part of the game. You would expect the communication wouldn't raise any red flags.
Yea Wine was a real easy project that just came out in no time at all. Now even today Wine isn't used as a Windows Emulator/Replacement. But for a few targeted applications that you need to work with. If you have mostly windows apps, then you will be using Windows for better usage. But I remember Wine back in the late 90's. It took a long time to get working and there is still a lot of work to go. For the most part, people have switched to visualizing Windows in Linux as things work nearly 100%.
You got the hippy liberals who complain that you are hurting the environment or poisining the people or a shill to corporate culture. You got the religious nut conservatives who will complain that your ideas go against God, ethiclly wrong, part of a plot from the government to take control over the populous. We got Hollywood making scientists socially inept egg heads, used to fill plot holes with techno babble. If we try to do science at home we get arrested for doing something that may be dangerious.
No, but if they are feeling sick and generally like crap they may have some more autism like symptoms, until they get better. However Anxiety often called butterflies in your stomach for a reason. You feel a little stress and your body reacts to the stress which then feed backs to the brain and escalates it.
Now if you have Gut Bacteria (which we all do and for the most part it is a good thing) but your particular unique combination tends to react harder when you feel a little stress then it could cause the anxiety reflex. Other people they may still get the same initial stress but their bacteria mixture in their body doesn't react to it the same way and stops the feedback problem.
If this idea is truly the case in humans, then we may be able to treat autism with a mixture of antibiotics and probiotics to kill of the bad bacteria and add some good ones.
Now if the Union Leaders tried to keep a peaceful strike. That is one thing. This isn't a strike it was planed malicious attack.
Also Civil disobedience isn't protected by law. It means you are breaking the law for a cause. Now that you are going to break the law, you get caught you will face the penalty. Now if society feels your disobedience was worth it, you will be a marter for your cause, and cause future laws to be changed. However for the most part you will still be in jail.
Think of the Engineers and Scientists who made the a-Bomb. 1. Don't help and you will be the reason for a sustained war costing millions of lives of mostly military personnel. 2. Make the A-Bomb that will kill ten thousand civilians and ending the war.
If I say designed a better targeting system. Did I... 1. Make a system more capable of destroying people. 2. Make a system more capable of not hitting the wrong people.
Shhh... You don't want to mess with a good old fashion outrage with facts.

Yea some people get pissy, when they can't justify the high cost for their own data center.
Now cloud computing can replace a lot of data centers, but not all of them. The real trick is to find when it is cheaper or not.

No the point isn't as much about convincing the people with the strong views, but to people who didn't have a particular view already.
