    I never saw too much business adoption of netbooks. But I saw a lot of people going from normal notebook to the iPad. Not always because it is cool. But more to the fact that they are smaller and lighter and run longer without a battery. The biggest use I have seen for them is for email, and keeping notes, most have an external keyboard attached to the case.

    Netbooks were a little bulkier, They needed to be wall charged, not USB charged with the PC next to them, or the USB port modern cars seem to have now. And their PC OS is slow and bulky compared to the more optimized portable OS.

    The people who do well with an iPad are the same people who never really needed a full PC to begin with.

    That isn't the definition of advertising.

    Advertising is to tell the world your product is available, and try to show its advantage over similar products.

    Now some advertising crosses the line and become deceptive. But not all of it. Their goal it to attract people who would buy your product or service.

    The problem with most of the third party candidates is that they are too fringe, they are even further from moderation. I am actually a registered member of the Modern Whig Party (A moderate group).
    But if you saw the New York Governors race a couple years ago. They had a big debate with all the candidates. The Green Party and the Rent is too damn high party made the Democrats look like the moderates in the debate. Then republican was a strong Tea Party Candidate, and the had a Libertarian party too.

    If they agreed on a debate the Republican vs. Democrat, Cuomo would actually have a harder time, Because he could be placed as far left. But next to "Rent is too damn High" party. He looked like the only rational person in the room.

    (I use to carpool and there was a house with a "Vote R" Sign., we use to joke, I wonder what the R is. Of course he want us to vote for "Rent is too Damn High")

    We are no longer electing a person we are electing an ideology.

    1. Innovation and the Economy: Democrats, More money into funding NSF, and Public Universities. Republicans, let the private market innovate themselves, allow competition to improve be the driving factor.

    2. Climate Change: Democrats, More money into less effective green energy in hopes that money will make it work better. Republicans Increase use in Nuclear and Natural Gas production and let the market decide what is best for them.

    3. Research and the Future: Democrats,More money into funding NSF, and Public Universities. Republicans, let the private market innovate themselves, allow competition to improve be the driving factor.

    4. Pandemics and Biosecurity: Democrats, Wait until something happens in the US then we will have an answer 15 minutes before the problem climaxes, From a federal funded scientist.     5. Education: Democrates, More money into schools, we will put some stupid metrics to show that it works. Republicans, vouchers for private schools, all competition of schools force them to improve.

    6. Energy: Democrats, More money into less effective green energy in hopes that money will make it work better. Republicans Increase use in Nuclear and Natural Gas production and let the market decide what is best for them.

    7. Food: Democrats, screw scientific results they are just from some corporate drone anyways, ban anything that sounds scary. Republicans let it all go out, and lets not try to measure it, until enough people are dying.

    8. Fresh Water: Democrats, Find the most polluted areas spend a lot of money to clean it up (It cannot be used for drinking, or fishing. But there is a 50% reduction of pollution!!!), and show a nice big percentage number to show the improvement. Republicans, tell the population to buy water cleaning systems for their house.

    9. The Internet: Democrats, Policies that will favor the internet companies that fund them More Open, but we tax it more. Republicans, Policies that will favor the internet companies that fund them, less open but no taxes.

    10. Ocean Health: Democrats, heavy restrictions on all companies. Republicans, The Ocean is in in international waters... Not our concern.

    11. Science in Public Policy: Both sides will give some BS answer and only cite science when it is for their benefit. Discredit the source when it isn't.

    12. Space: Democrats, Wast of Time and Money. Republicans, a military strategy.

    13. Critical Natural Resources: Democrats Put money in protecting or expanding and regulating the users. Republicans, Supply and Demmand will correct itself, once becomes to scarce price will rise high enough for alternative.

    14. Vaccination and public health: Democrats, force it on everyone screw what their religion or belief is. Republicans let people decide for themselves, and allow the spread of misinformation too.

    We are no longer getting candidates for leaders, we are getting ideology enforcers.
    Democrats, Will spend want to spend more money to solve the problem, money will solve all problems.
    Republicans, Will want private business to solve the problem, businesses can solve all problem.

    What we need is a leader not an ideology. Who can look at these issues and say. If we change a process here we may be able to solve a problem without that much money. Or this area does have a good process but it needs some more money to reach critical mass. Analysis when there is policies are in conflict with each other and try to measure the trade offs.
    But one of those guys would be those horrible moderates, or as we call them Flip Floppers. They do crazy things like listen to both sides, and use their own mind to come up with a solution. We don't want one of those people to rule our country. We want easy to digest sound bytes that follows a consistent ideology. Because a simple ideology will solve all our problems, the problem is always the other guy who will not allow us to implement our ideology.

    There is an interesting aspect towards Science Fiction... The fact that it is Fiction.

    In other words Science Fiction is not real. They are stories created by someone. There isn't any strong evidence a Warp/Hyper Space Drive will work or Time Travel is possible. Or that most planets out of the solar system if they do have life chances are it will just be the equivalent of slime on the rocks. If we do find intelligent alien life we have a chance to be able to communicate with them.

    The vision of the future I see is closer to Red Dwarf then as of Star Trek. They are no Intelligent Aliens, In a couple of thousand years we may be able to colonize a few planet our of our solar system (to be a backup for humanity), over millions of years we would diverged in evolution. But this will be probably across 2 or 3 planets.

    A lot of site you like you are not willing to take the hassle of paying. Lets say Facebook, If they require members to pay, you will just see a huge exodus of members.

    Advertising isn't evil. If used properly it helps support a site to keep it running, it needs to be done well enough to get people attention, but not so much to get in the way.

    How much do you really care for anything on the internet? For a lot of sites their value is in large number of user. Subscriptions or other form of payment can lead to drop in users thus loss in value.

    For most sites you have the following proven revenue models. (Choose your poison)
    1. Advertising - you attract users to go to view someone else page. Done correctly the adds will be relevant to what you need.
    2. Selling Big Data - The site collects data about you and sell it to others. Often to advertisers who try to make the adds relevant to you... However it could be used for more evil things.
    3. Big company support - These site you are being funded by some larger company, for the most part that means you need to be pawns of the parent company.
    4. Owned by a political group - In essence their goals is to brain wash you to their view.
    5. No Good support - Enjoy it while it last it will go out of business shortly.

    I haven't seen Micropayments work. Subscriptions work for only a few cases.

    I remember a while back, (Like a decade or so) I did some simple benchmark tests.
    In essence display all the numbers from 1 to 1,000,000
    And depending on the video Card, this program would run faster in X-Windows or just in Text Mode.

    Most new video cards have the performance in the GUI stuff, and not much work in making text mode faster. So I would expect with hardeare acceleration rendering for simple text you may be able to see a major speed improvement noticeable in application that blurt out data to the screen (Such application that blurt are normally meant to be piped to an other app for better detail, But sometime we just let it run... That I/O is slowing down the application running speed.

    That said what I would really like to see out of a Frame Buffer Text Mode is better support for other terminal types. No longer restricted to the BIOS text rules. We can emulate other formats such as the higher number VT that allows for different font sizes on the same screen (well wide, narrow, and normal). Form based Terminal Emulation such at 3270.

    I am not dissing the command line, I really like it, but PC Text mode is an ancient fossil now that need to be gone.

    You made your trade off decision. There is no fault in choosing Apple. But if you felt your Laptop needed to be more configurable then you should have gone with someone else.

    I had Macs for the past 10 years. When they went uni-body I switch to a Think Pad. (for many reasons) but one of the reason was the problem I had with all my previous macs was after a few years the battery would die, (some of them actually had bent my case a bit). But I could always replace the battery. The new ones say that it isn't an issue and that I should Trust Apple... But I don't so I went with a system where I could replace the battery if needed.

    This is just another attempt at Microsoft for eroding the userbase of it's primary competitor, Apple.

    Unless you consider Android Linux. That is a complacently separate debate. But Microsoft vs. the normal GNU/Linux distributions Microsoft is still strong, and not loosing much ground to them (Sorry Linux for Desktop Fans). But Apple has been sucking up a lot of Microsoft Thunder.
    Mac Sales are gaining market share (at the expense of Microsoft), iPod, then iPhone then iPad, sucked up Microsoft growth market.

    Android has been successful in the phone market. It hasn't yet gain traction in the Tablet market. And still after over a decade, no one has made the iPod Killer... The only iPod killer is Apples others products.

    The GNU/Linux (The Linux we tend to think of) Distributions. Are not really good for the Desktop (still) they are great for servers, appliances, behind the scenes type of stuff, Developers Work stations. Yes Grandma can use Linux to browse the web, you can use it to code. But what about average Joe who wants to import pictures, make home movies, play games (with all their hardware working). Still Windows is dominate, if not windows they will use Apple.

    The issue has always been with a lot of piracy. The fallacy is the company is competing with free, that isn't the case, the problem is the company is competing with easier to get. Microsoft with its different licenses where the rates that people are willing to pay they are technically not support to pay. Even the guys who do not want a pirated copy but an original would get the OEM off eBay (something we really shouldn't be doing)... However if we can get a good price for the OS a lot of us will be willing to get the fully legit version.

    I think getting paid minimum wage is probably the best thing they can do.

    You don't want "Professional Juries" where it is their economic interests to make the trial as long as possible. Then also there is an issue of being fair and getting a good cross section of the population.

    The Jury you will often have a guy who makes minimum wage, someone else 20 and hour and someone else 40, 80 an hour. If we pay the people who make more to match their income, then there will be pressure for the judge to get a poorer jury.

    Minimum Wage, is enough to keep the jury to try to keep the trial speedy. There is a fair amount of one's integrity, if someone chooses to be a juror (they have plenty of excuses to get out if they want) then it is usually because they are willing to be part of the process, and try to stay just as long to get a fair trial.

    Why do you need to feel sorry to the people who Live to Work. They have a life, they are doing what they are interested in... It just happened to be work.

    Do any of us really care for everything that suppose to be important.

    I mean how much time do we really do about the following and yes I am missing a lot.
    Controlling Carbon Pollution.
    Saving endangered animals
    Stopping War and Violence
    Helping give the next generation education and good values
    Insuring everyone is being treated fairly and justly. ...

    To be fair most of us who work to live are focused on Banging their preferred gender, and spending time with their genetic offspring, and others with either genetic or personal similarities.

    The core of the problem is that people are different.

    You got some people who for 12-16 hours. Work energizes them, when they are not working they feel drained. They Live to Work.
    You got other people who are good for 0-4 hours. Work wares them down, but they need to do so to survive. They Work to Live.
    Then you have people in the middle who are good with 5-10 hours a day. (averaging around 8) they like their work and their personal life, too much on one side or the other stresses them out.

    The 12-16 hours of work, means making a lot of sacrifices with your life outside of work. However if you Live to work those sacrifices seem reasonable.
    The 0-4 hours of work, means you will not be making much money at all, and you sacrifice things you can get, but you spend more time outside of work, and the simple life may bring you to happiness.
    Then you get the average Joe. 7-9 Hour workdays, is a good balance. Where you can have personal time with work time.

    You see the Rich (Who often work 12-16 hours) discredit the poor (working 0-4 hours) as being lazy. Well not really, they work hard at living their life, they just don't value money as much as the rich does.
    You see the Poor (who often work 0-4 hours) discredit the rich (working 12-16 hours) as being obsessed with wealth and not caring about man kind. While they may care about man kind but they feel they can do greater good with more money.

    Apple did a lot of work to make their UI as a GUI for consumer level users. Xerox interface was for a limited use. Trying to get it in a system that is under 5k.

    For Example Supercomputers can perform Ray Tracing Animations in real time. For our normal PC we cannot (at least at the same quality). In order to attempt this we take a lot of the ideas and find what to reduce and shortcuts that have the smallest visual effects. So we took an idea and make a new product off of it... Innovation.

    But this is a difference case of Samsung and Apple They are both on the same market, selling a product at around the same price with similar specs. So it more of a case of copying then innovating.

    The typical ThinkPad keyboard is actually very nice to type on. you really don't need to do that. I found the ThinkPad keyboard better to type on then most of the Mid/UpperMid-quality external keyboards out there. While not a Clicky Model M you get good response when the key is entered vs. just a squish. You get a nice little snap while you are typing... They keys are spread out where it is useful and has a good feel to them.

    The style of the think pad is akin to the following business attire. Black Pants, White Shirt, Black Jacket, the Tie is the different model you choose. It isn't meant to stand out in a crowd saying HEY LOOK AT ME! See How Cool I am. But more of I am part of a team, stop starting at my computer and lets discuss the issues at hand.

    ThinkPads are very popular in Albany, NY we had some consultants come in, and they said they felt out of place because of their shiny flashy Dells, because everyone else just has a standard black Think Pad, There were different models in the meetings. Managers at the 200 and 220 tables, tech Guys had the T Series. But they all looked similar.
    That is the beauty of the ThinkPad style. If everyone has a different type of computer your is just on of the different types. If they all have ThinkPads you fit in too.

    That is common. We go by the joke we called a fare bidding process. Everyone denies it but this is how it works.
    The Government finds a vendor they want to use. Once they find the vendor they like, they often get the resumes of the people who will be working, or the product specifications, then they use that to make their bid. Because the Bid has a detail on what they want, it is hard for a competitor to compete with the bid, because every product and service is a little different. Even though they may be able to help solve the same problems.

    If you look at lot of these bids, you see things like
    Web Site Development
    Required Sills:
    HTML 10+ years
    JavaScript 8+ years
    Photoshop 6+ years
    ASP.NET 9+ years
    FORTRAN 77 4+ years
    C++ 12+ years
    MUMPS 3+ years

    You see bids like that you know they have already picked someone they want to use. The Job doesn't even require FORTRAN or MUMPS or C++ however they may have some in house applications that still run these systems so they add it in their bids, but they have already picked who they want and they know that they have those skills, and they also have similar systems on their side (To show that they have a need for such technology).

    They did all the paper work correctly and there isn't any sign of corruption. However they found a way to bypass the fair and competitive bidding process.

    Why don't I have a multi-touch display. When I bought it. It said it has a multi-touch display. When I use it show multiple finger movements, and programs that use the device does different things when I move my finders on the screen in different ways. Heck to see you comment I did a Pinch Zoom to size it so I can see it clearly.

    Besides that it is also an issue that males have less to lose if. They accidently get some one pregnant. There is a lot less incentive for males to take contraceptives then woman. Now condoms on the other hand help prevent him from getting diseases, so there will be a higher usage rate. For the woman she has most to lose if she gets pregnant.

    So until our culture changes where after the birth the male is far more responsible for the child, I don't see a huge popularity in male contraceptives.

    ThinkPads and Apple has two different target audience.
    Apple targets consumers, while the ThinkPad is business oriented.

    Apple changes it's style every few years. ThinkPads still haral back to its initial style about 20 years ago.
    In many ways it is a testimate of the think pad style.

    Matted black. When it isn't shiny you don't notice the scrapes and bangs over the years. Sharper angles allows for more technology to fit in a particular space. Tough material that allows it to stay together well without babying it.

    Having used Windows 8 preview for a while. I actually quite like it, I do have a multi-touch display on my laptop so works quite well. Comparing it to Windows 7. It made it from a Laptop that just happened to have a touch screen, to a high performance tablet (Core I7 Sandy Bridge 8 gigs of ram), that runs standard PC applications.

    Should you go out and buy Windows 8 to upgrade your old desktop? No Windows 8 isn't for you, you are better off with Windows 7 (or XP if your system is really old)

    When you get a new PC (Probably a Laptop) you may want to consider an UltraBook or a convertible Tablet, or even a full tablet, then Windows 8 is actually very nice.

    For me, I was thinking of an iPad, but decided to go with a convertible Laptop because I was willing to loose some portability, and be able to normal PC stuff. It came with Windows 7. It worked, it has some third party tablet software... But it ran like garbage. Then I put windows 8 on it, it Ran very nice, and I can use it as both as a PC and a Tablet interchangeably.

    The biggest thing.... The Start Button is gone and went full screen... It really isn't that big of a deal. In some ways it is better because you have full screen to do your searches.
