Well the medical dramas in general. Yesterday I was seeing something on TV how the Crime shows make the world seem more violent then it actually is. I am sure the same thing about these medical shows. In real life House wouldn't be getting a Random Patient once a week, that he finds worthy of his diagnosis. That would probably happen once a year. In the meantime he would probably be visiting people who have been referred to by other doctors who are stumped, in less of an emergency situation but in a well planned scheduled visit, from people around the United States.
I think there is actually a good middle ground a DRM level that "keeps the honest, honest" Much like locking your car door. If someone wants to get in really badly they can (A few months ago I lost an old GPS from someone breaking my window to steal it)... However if you lock your door most of the time they will just see if the door is locked if it is then they move on no harm no foul.
The same thing should be with DRM. It should be strong enough to discourage illegal activity. Hey it is not easy it will require work to get at it. So for most people they will skip it.
Freedom isn't about doing what you want. It is about the ability to choose different tradeoffs. You can't do anything you want, because we live in a world of sacristy any choice you make there will be other things you have given up.
If you try to "Hot Rod" everything you loose a lot of time doing things that have already been done. But if you decide to make some concessions you can get something that will do 75% what you want and you may save money/time to do something else that could compensate the fact that you didn't get the 25% that you wanted.
What isn't lost is freedom, but what that problem that people get all fussed about is a change of tradeoffs on their decisions. If more people get hooked on the more canned solutions, it makes the tradeoff of DIY seem more expensive, even if the price didn't change. I don't predict any shortage in the general purpose computer, and the DIY crowd. Perhaps PC wont be as cheap as they are now... But there will be enough people to keep hobby computing going. It may also be good in general as the General Purpose PC will get rid of a lot of the precanned software and come with more hobby tools that will make the PC a better choice for the people who decide to go "Hot Rodding". But that is just a bunch of speculation. It is about unsertanty of the future then a loss of freedom, It only feels like a lost of freedom because you future choices are no longer clear and you cannot see alternate paths.
However being punished for plagiarism is completely discrediting all the work that you did do. I am always worried about my citations in college because of the EVIL PLAGIARISM which has all the consequences including failing the class. If the professor was a real dick, they will find a error in your process and then fail you because of this. Ignoring all you work.
Agreed... Most of my programs are Web Applications but I wouldn't call myself a Web Developer. I am a software developer first who happens to use HTML for the data output and Javascript to streamline the User Interface. But most of the real work is behind the scenes. Creating database procedures (Yes there is a big debate about stored procedures if you should use them or not, I tend to like them), creating server side programs to gather the information correctly, manage security, and do any additional stuff that you can't or shouldn't do on the client. I use HTML, Ajax and Javascript as the last level to actually get the program to display and be useable (granted there is a lot of work on that side to) But I would be taking about the same amount of time in other languages making a solid UI in it anyways.
HTML, javascript, AJAX (which is still javascript) and the server side development tools, are all good tools and if you know how to write software vs. just knowing how to code it means you can make a robust programs for the Web. It doesn't require all this extra stuff, it just requires good developers.
There are a lot of junky apps that are hanging on by a thread that are non-web based too... No matter what tools you give them they will still make crappy software if they don't know how to make good software.
I would say that Everyone would be prosecuted. We all have our moments where we just didn't think things threw, or let your emotions get in the way of good reason... Sure a lot of people on slashdot will deny this. Because they built their reputation on seeming that they are smarter then everyone else... However in reality we all do stupid things... Especially if there is a pretty woman asking you to do it.
Because people want a good conspiracy. They want to hear that all the problems in their lives is controlled by a small yet powerful group of people who have it in for them...
As someone who has been on record defending Microsoft from some of Slashdot Microsoft can do no good crowd... I think it is more to the point you need to install a platform specific program to your computer. Which really misses the point of having a web based version of your tool. The point of having a web based program is to not have any bit run on your computer... Why? 1. Security. Although a lot of fuss and whining about security of a cloud etc... But if it access data on your drive it can effect overall security. So you have a virus infected excel file, that you open up and share with other systems then download it again... Guess what that gets infected too. Secondly ok you have an EXE it is only matter of time the data that EXE does is found out. It seems like a way to try to work around some bad security practices.
2. Updates. A lot of IT for companies are not keen on keeping your systems up to date. They should but they don't however to compensate that they try to lock your computer down so if you try to install this EXE it will fail, sure you may be able to get the EXE once... But if they update their code and you cannot get the EXE then you are stuck.
3.Platform indépendance. Yes I know Microsoft is using this to push windows... But really... Use silverlight or some other Microsoft plugin that even pretends that it is more platform independent then an EXE.
4. Mixing the worst of both worlds... So you are going to have a clumsy browser to do the UI with an EXE to do some communication... Seems kinda backwards to me.
Microsoft for Web Application has been on the record of being really bad... I have tried threw out the decade (with my last attempt a couple of months ago) to see Microsoft web based applications and they all seem to be a decade behind the time. Heck I do a lot of Web Based Development with.NET however I rarely if ever use any of the additional tool boxes that come with it... Because they are so crappy that I have to make them myself to get any real quality of out my product.
Except for the fact that right now it is that much easier to mine from earth, or recycle a lot of the material. We don't need to mine from space until we are actually up there for a while.
There is a lot of news that happends in the United States that can make a good 24 hour plan. However the fact is that CNN is trying to get the most audence. So they are filling it with entertainment flufff. And the meaningless comentaries that just get people routing for them or going online to critize them.
Except there are a lot of Legit Adult Entertainment companies as well who would welcome this. They want the business but they don't want the legal hassle for operations. If you site can be blocked easily then it just may be good as you don't get hassled for trying to attract kids to your site. As there are easy ways for parents to block it.
I think you are misunderstanding how DRM works... All those connections were for digital information you can DRM digital information. You are thinking about DRM over HDMI that is because the previous methods sent analog information to the device.
It is difficult to DRM Analog information (heck lets even call it ARM (Analog Rights Management)). As the main information is easily decoded. Digital Information can be encrypted.
However you must also realize that Analog has a fundamental weakness is that it isn't accurate and cannot be copied exactly. Hence why all the fuss about DRM. Digital Stuff can be copied over and over millions of time and it is still as good as the original. Analog copies after 1 or 2 copies of copies you can tell the difference.
It isn't about the wire or unification of the wire, or the interface it is the software the handles the information the determines DRM
As well in MA the spot where a lot of "rich family" democrats live. In essence the people who give democrats a bad name. They are opposed to these windmill as it is effecting their views of the cape. They are ok with alternative energy just as long as it is in poor peoples areas. The Texians have more of a independant personality. If you do it on your land it is your issue. If I can see your land then I am too close to you.
This really falls in the So What List. The catholic church is looking for more priests whats new. So they are using Facebook as a tool. So what... A good for them.
Now this is just in bad taste for slashdot as it will only really be just a forum to make fun of problems that a religion is having.
This Ain't News for nerds, this isn't news for geeks, if you are not interested in joining the priesthood it doesn't even matter. You just wanted an other forum to make fun of catholics.
My Money isn't paying for their religion. There money is. If I were to pay for a movie with an actor as a Scientologist First of all my money is going to entertainment for me. And as far as I am concerned my money goes to the Movie Theater/DVD outlet. Now they buy the rights to the movies with their pool of money they have. Now that Travolta movie may have been bought partially when I saw something else. So it is really the Theater's money when I watch the movie. AND YES I WILL GET THE ARGUMENT "But if a bunch of people stop watching movies with these guys they will no longer buy new ones" which is true. However in terms of social problems in the world Scientologists are really low (Oh no they have some crazy religious system, and they sued some internet companies because they hid behind copyright law to prevent logical analysis of their belief system) and we have the freedom of religion in the United States, so trying to make a large scale boycott probably wont work, especially if it seems like it is from a bunch Atheists (Still a minority, who many believe that they are trying to rid America of its first amendment rights. )
This logic go along the following... If you buy goods that have parts made in China you are funding the communists. If you buy opiates/oil you are funding the terrorists If you IT services you are funding Hindu religions If you buy cotton you are funding the right wing christians
Our economy is so interconnected and there are laws in place to prevent a lot of discrimation against different groups that in essence you will be paying for something you find wrong.
A Part Time college student has 2 Classes per week. Full Time Students have 4-6 classes per week. The Crazy Insane ones have 8. (or there are a bunch of small low credit classes, or labs for an other class)
I never said I couldn't get it installed... It is more to the case it isn't as easy as everyone else says it is. Hiding behind the problem and blaming the end user will not fix the problems. Back in the old days of Slackware and Kernel 1.x things were tricky however at the time people knew Linux wasn't fully up to snuff and actually worked on improving it. Then I spot around the year 2000 things started to go down hill. It became more about Free and Open Source and less about making a good product. By 2005 Linux actually got a pretty good following because of the rash of viruses that attacked windows and the expansion of Firefox and Web app... But after that Linux just stayed where it was at. Apple took over the last half of the decade. Now it seems this decade Microsoft is back, kinda humbled but with actually good products.
Yes Boadcom NIC... I Know it well. You can get it to work with Ubuntu just as long as you can go thew the lecture, and the warning. That would make someone who doesn't follow open source think that they have to pay money to install it. How about something a bit more softer.
This driver isn't licensed under the GPL or compatible license. Please check with the drivers manufactures license for use.
You need to chill a bit man. There are religious people out there, and they are not going away. And guess what they are still getting more new people. There are non-religous people out there, and they are not going away. And Guess what they are still getting more people too.
The point of a politics and religion are ideas that try to give particular rules that are an attempt to achieve a better society... However people all have different views on this stuff. What is a BATSHIT INSANE idea to you, could actually be a good idea that will work quite well for a lot of people... And your views could be considered just as crazy and stupid to the other side.
Lets take the good old Republican vs. Democrat thing...
Now People in Cities vote Democrat, People in Rural Areas vote republican (on the average). Now what is that.
The Democrats say it is because the cities have a larger population of educated people who are smart enough to realize they their ideas are better. The Republicans say the rural people know how to take care of them selfs without needing handouts.
Now what is the real case is kinda in the middle. Cities in order to function need stronger government services. Paying taxes has a direct advantage to the city dwellers. And would like to see larger government as they see more regulations and services as a good thing because it helps keep their society in order.
Now the Rural people sees taxes as an expense with very little benefit. They tend to do things by themselves and if there is a problem then they will fix it. Government is a burden to them they get money taken out of their pay for no real benefit.
These are idea that are very different however they are not crazy concept to understand. And smart and intelligent people can make opposing view points. As well they will try to get others to go with their view point as well. Why because it is what will help them out the most if they have more people to follow their views.
especially if the manufacturer is a small one with no resources to dev for linux
Like Dell.
However I don't like building my own System just to run Linux. Not because I can't but because you assume that I have the time to check every freaken spec to see if Linux works with it, then you need to see if your chosen Distribution works with it. Or the fact that your computer say for work is purchased by reasons unknown sure they will allow you to install Linux on it but they are not going to spend extra money for those particular parts that will make it Linux compatible.
If Linux for the desktop concept will succeed there needs to be a stop of these excuses on why it doesn't happen and just get it to work.
