    12 years ago people were paid $80k a year to do Microsoft front page work and call them selfs computer programmers.

    $25 an hour is a good rate for people with 5-6 years experience in upstate NY While just 2 hours south in NYC the rate is closer to $50 an hour. But the cost of living is much different too For $25 an hour in upstate NY you can buy yourself a 3 bedroom about 2000 sq/ft house with a good amount of land which is in extremely good condition. In NYC for the same price you will be lucky to get a studio condo probably around 700 sqft.

    There is a time to fight and a time let it be. If Google didn't agree to the terms it would not have operated in China, leaving the Chinese citizens with less exposure to the outside world. It is not evil, it is following the rules and trying to provide the most good legally possible. The legal system is evil not google.

    Back in my days youngans, Hacking or cracking as it was sometimes called, while still illegal was something to be respected, you had to know what you were doing to break into a system and the harder the break-in the more respect you got... Now todays you kids got all comerical and you can break into computers without having the break into them. You just ask someone for the passwords and they give them to you... Dag-nabbit that is not hacking that sounds like politicians to me.

    There are a bunch of very vocal people who kinda hate everything unnatural and say everything will kill you faster, try to get laws past banning such technologies although they tend to fail most of the time sometimes these stupid laws get past. And if they don't and it is found harmful they will go "See I told you I was right next time you will listen to me!", so the next time they will ban the next harmless material by using psutoscience so they can show how much of a better person they are from everyone else...

    I would say let science do its research and come up with the correct opinion. If the danger isn't obvious or from excess I would say take the advantage and use it in moderation and allow it to improve your life, and not stay up all night worrying abut things that I don't have any knowledge on.

    The real reason. Such people are too expensive and we don't want to pay his salary. Better off with people with less skills who can be trained then get the best at a high cost who will only have a disproportional benefit vs cost to the company.

    Which illustrates the problem. Man pages are good (enough) if you want to know how to use a command... However if want to know which command to you are kinda out of luck unless you use the -K and still it may not be helpful for more verbose searches.

    I know cd changes directory
    in dos rd removes a directory
    ao may be a short form to the old default executable name when you compile a C program. a.out which normally has executable permissions.

    So could cdrdao In theory be a program that would collapse a directory and move its content to the parents directory insuring all its permissions are set.

    You make it sound like a bad thing...

    Yes people don't want to tweak config files to give it an extra 10% speed improvement. Or fuss around searching for "Pure" GNU drivers that work. They just want a system that boots up, allows them to go to their apps get their work done. When they are done with work they may want some entertainment out of the device.

    Do you feel you have to know how every component in your car works.
    All the technology and people who go is to flushing your toilet making sure that nasty stuff leaving your body doesn't come back to haunt you again.
    Do you need to know what materials your desk is made out of, how they cut the wood etc...

    There is a lot of stuff going on outside of our areas of interests. We use a lot of such products and services but don't even think about all the details that goes on, for the most part we don't care, even if it vitally important to us, but as long as it works we are happy.

    Well for one if you get a reputation of fighting off the patent trolls successfully then you gain a reputation of being hard to sue and makes suing you a risky endeavor thus people will sue you less.
    Secondly if you get a reputation for winning patent lawsuits then people will be careful on infringing on your patents as well be open to more out of court settlements.

    Sure it is hypocritical in terms of ideals. But it is business and you expect business to do what will effect the bottom line. Fighting off trolls and winning or even if they loose the trolls loose too, then Microsoft gains an advantage over its competition. Thus makes more money.

    Yes lets put all the work on the server. The server should handle all formatting and every single error check and lets wait for the server to respond and reload the entire page to say something is wrong. Lets not have the ability to hide or move objects, because we need to reload the page over and over and over again... Never mind CPUs are Really fast and the standard Desktop has ton of memory. Lets fill up the slower bandwidth with reloading the same information over again.

    Sorry your post is screaming, I am not comfortable with JavaScript and it is effecting my 7337 status. So I will insult it so I can seem like I am skilled programmer.

    However we should get correct data. If Global Warming is not an issue, then why are we focusing so much on Carbon. Carbon Trading, Carbon Free Energy, your Carbon Footprint... The only think I have been hearing that is Bad about Carbon Dioxide is it is contributing to Global Warming, and perhaps raising acidity in the oceans.... But the issue is if you are going to make policy to protect the environment you need real facts to make the right choices. Environmental policy is about making the right tradeoffs it isn't about prohibitions it is about measuring what will benefit society the most without the most harm to the environment, and hopefully get to a point where we are doing good enough to allow the earth catchup to what we cause.

    Exactly there are a lot of business functions with rather generic names.

    Human Resource... Are these the guys who keep track of your sick days or are they the ones who analyses all the people in there jobs and makes sure each one is the right fit and is being compensated for their work, and that their home/work life can stay balanced.

    Marketing... Are these guys the ones who do cold calls to the customer during dinner. Or are they the ones who do a lot of work to figure out who their target market is and crate a plan where people who would want the product know about it.

    Janitorial... Do they just empty trash cans and vacuums the floor, or do they do the plumbing electricity and landscaping and all the things to keep the building in running operation.

    Management... Do they just make sure you do what their boss tell them to make you do. Or are they part of the decision process and work on the direction of the company and come up with ways of improving the business in their section.

    Finance... Do they just make sure they are bringing in more money then they are spending. Or are they tracking/investing and controlling the flow of money in the organization.

    IT like any job really covers a wide area from rather low end jobs to high end jobs.

    In reality IT has a lot of titles with in the group, and each group has its own rage in them too... Support, Administration, Software Development, Software Architecture, Hardware design... CTO, CIO... When I post on a Resume I don't say I am an IT Guy I say I am a Software Developer or a Software Architect (I am kinda in the middle professionally) I havn't seen to many jobs looking for IT Guys... However after you are hired you may be called such outside of IT... Just as you call them Marketing Guys or HR Guys...

    Most programs I have seen they don't allow you to type in thousands separator. If they are fancy they will display it to you for in the program when you type in the number. Otherwise it will not show... And for God sake why would you want to store the number as a string any ways?

    In this economy references are worth more then gold (well right now gold is rather high) but with a down economy and you are trying for a job you need something more then someone else. Sorry l33t computer skills are skills that you can very easy find. Good employees are much harder.

    $150 an hour seems like a standard consulting rate... However... Do you really think you are going to spend all your times focused on the adds. Especially google adds which don't popup etc... Heck they may even be helpful to you as you doing your work an add will come up for a product that will make your life easier as it is context sensitive.

    Yes yes... An operating system that can run on 95% of the available hardware, is a weak and poorly implemented technology... Linux can't run on as much hardware as windows can, nor can OS X. Ever since XP the crashes I have seen was from Bad Drivers... Just as all the crashes from Linux come from Bad Drivers. Windows Technology is actually rather sound and it works very well... It is the fact they try to keep backwards compatibility and have poor security system in terms it feels you need to have administrator access to do anything and the idea if it is a security risk then just alert the person they will know the right thing to do... However I would expect if Microsoft was willing to toss away its old legacy support it would be a rather solid OS that would make Linux and OS X look rather flimsy.

    If you feel that the company is treating you bad now... Imagine if they found out that you stole data from them, and used it against them... We had an employee do that. He is now bankrupt, and in essence lost everything. And we don't feel bad about it. Oddly enough if you leave your job on good terms even if they lay you off. Chances are they will at least give you a decent reference. Vs. a Yes he worked here and that is all I am gonna say.

    That is why I am on Slashdot where Linux is the Major OS where everyone is using it. The GPL is the absolutely perfect Licence for all use. And anything could be considered censoring or a violation of freedom of speech any saying otherwise will moderate the post down to such a low level that most people won't read it, unless they are the trolls themselves.

    As My Idea is more correct then everyone else's no matter if I have more or less facts. I have spent a good 10 minutes thinking about the problem and my mind is locked.

    Still it needs a dependency of Guilt 0.87beta. It can be replaced by Jerk 1.0 or Self absorption 3.0 however they tend to conflict with some versions of Growing Up Lessons that tend to be required for a lot of other apps, including ones that includes make money. Which allows any version of Girlfriend to work.

    Man it is dependency hell.

    Well... the government did allow people to build there. Insurance companies considered it an acceptable risk (pre-Katrina). Most of the houses would be saved if the Levies didn't break.

    I would say this would go under normal government protection not excessive one. When it is an individual who knows the risk then it is their fault. However if you expand a city to these areas then it becomes a government concern.

    Good Idea but I don't know if the world is ready for it yet...
    Much like the Apple Newton wasn't really ready for the PDA market, I think the same holds true from Cromium OS. (I have been wrong before but...) There is still a good dependency on non-Web Applications. And things like printers and other drivers who have extra features we will see if Google can handle it. I would like to be wrong but I don't think it will fly.

    I use the GIMP when I need to do graphics work but I cant get a hold of Photoshop. It is good enough to get the work done but it is not great.
