I think Big Oil needs to be punished for this misinformation campaign. Spreading the belief that Fossil Fuels are not causing global warming or global warming doesn't exist, also their effort to criticize alternative energy sources to prevent energy diversity is rather shady as well.
That said, Fossil Fuels offer a rather safe high density and portable energy source. Where failure of such companies to meet the demand for oil would also be harmful and criminal. The Gasoline Automobile was considered an environmental friendly invention, at the time. Mostly due to the fact the pollution effect is less then the effect of having a lot of horses in a City, Needing food and cleaning, Attracting pests and plagues.
Alternate sources are getting close (I feel they would be closer if Big Oil didn't try to keep them down) to being as good as Fossil Fuels, Exceeding it in some areas, but behind in others. But I doubt we can truly get off Fossil Fuels, but we can be able to replace a lot of it.
Big Oil isn't the cause of climate change, it is the consumers who are.
The difference between Tobacco and Oil is that Tobacco doesn't have many or any real advantages other then for entertainment. So its harmful side effects which were hidden lied about and distorted (like what big oil had done) were not offset by its advantages.
You really don’t understand Unions. Unions love them or hate them are mostly around collective bargaining. Meaning you as an individual to the union are a single paying member. If trying to get fired you are to them a lost customer, so they may put some effort into keeping you in the job. However the process that the union will do this will be different for every job and union. Amazons “court” system may be a way some unions do it, and the unions may have invented it. However unlike the union Amazon is doing this because it is tough to find workers and cannot afford vindictive management. If there is a recession chances are Amazon will drop that policy because they can always get new and better employees during a recession.
Hey, no trying to use reasonable facts to get us off our irrational hate Apple Rant. We need to feel good about our Android Phones, sure Android has its own problems, but gosh darn it! Apple is evil... EVIL!
I would feel sorry for a small company who just doesn't have the resources to fully understand what is the cost of doing business in china. And got excited by the low price in partitioning. But for the big companies, with a lot to loose if they don't realize that there isn't a separation between business in government in china, and IP will be acquired if deemed necessary for national self interest.
The other question is how many people really use this feature in the current browsers too?
Most web developers are pure crap in following standards, and they do what they know what works, but not why it works. When the Reader view comes in play and messes up the styling data can be put in less then logical order.
Why do you think that. Because of random slashdot comments from guys who are still pissed that the GUI overtook the command line interface. Or the fact that you can’t use do software development on it? Apple has grown by leaps and bounds from the release of the iPhone. Even with competition with Android who makes a really competitive and popular products apple is able to hold its own. I haven’t seen a new PC in a while with serial, parallel ports. I haven’t seen a tape interface port in generations.
Why would we want ports on our phone when they are useful wireless alternatives.
I have always though of starting my own consulting business. The biggest problem isn't what you have listed, it is finding a Customer base to get my company off the ground.
Customers want to deal with established companies, knowing they will not be out of business in a year. Offering a product/service they can value over a long time. Also a lot of small companies with limited marketing ability, usually fall under used car salesmen like advertisements which makes them seem like shady individuals to work with.
The small thing politically that caused this was when George W Bush changed bankruptcy laws, to be more strict on the person/company going bankrupt, raising the cost of failure. But most of what the problem is during the Great Recession time, companies to survive merged and and consolidated to become bigger companies. So increasing the barrier to compete a small startup will now need to go against a mega company. Without having a lot of middle sized companies to work your way up from. Competition is good when you are going against someone bigger then you are, however if there is too much of a gap you are left in the dust without being able to figure out what things to learn from.
In general I am OK with states charging sales tax for online purchases. As Sales Tax takes advantages of both Progressive and Regressive taxing. Being that the Rich will in general buy more so they will be funding more to the government, while taking the simplicity of a fixed rate tax. Online Purchases still need to be shipped to the sates, thus needing to use its infrastructure to deliver them. So all in all in this day in age Taxing internet purchases is perfectly reasonable.
However the argument that the tax revenue is hurting any particular initiative is more to blame on bad leadership, or misaligned priorities. If the state wants more money to Education, then they would find a way to fund it better. Even if it means cutting money on services it deems as lower priority, and the leadership will need to take the responsibility of saying that that service doesn't deserve the money over Education. Also their are other taxing methods that can be applied to help better fund thing, all at their own tradeoffs as well.
Sales tax on internet is an easy win with low political repercussion. Because the extra cost of sales tax, isn't going to hurt the economy. because if they want the product and it is prices closer to a local store. They may want to go to the store to buy it and get the convince of getting it now, and returning it the same day. If it is a hard to find item in the area, you can still get it online, just for 5-10% more.
Comcast is accessible to people who are willing and able to pay for the service, We as customers are paying more for infrastructure that isn't going to our homes, as they will wire a community with only 50% may want to pay for the service. The wires are there, but they just decline service.
Having a government ISP All people pay via taxes for internet, which is overall cheaper because everyone is paying, and more people would use it because they would have affordable access.
Even if you buy a cabin in the woods and need to pay taxes for internet that you may not personally use, it will provider internet for that local grocery store who will process your credit card payment for food, update their inventory, so when you go on your away from it all vacation, you are not hunting for a place that you can buy that one thing you are missing.
Internet today is a key infrastructure. Like our roads, electrical grid, plowing, police, fire protection... There is a benefit to you even if you are not actively using it.
Europeans and their quaint ideas on remote. There are spots in the US have may have dozen people in the area of an European country. The US is has the 3rd largest population, but is 50th in population density.
So that means a lot more long last mile connections. So in Europe you can have the bulk of your population in a urban center, this allow it to be economically feasible to give a connection to a more remote area because the population of the remote area is much smaller.
That isn't to say the US isn't at fault for being behind the times. We havn't had any leadership willing or able to shake up the big telecom companies and push them out for the greater good.
I don't get your argument. Some gun safes are a work of art, where some people may want them as part of their own home furniture. or just having a tall safe where you can keep your other valuables safe. My parents are not smokers, but they have antique cigar boxes, which they store sewing supplies.
We actually use a lot of things outside their normal intended purposes.
The history of computing is a series of insecure systems working to get faster. Why? Because the benefits of speed outweigh the cost of security. During this time reasonable security enhancements are put in, to put aside higher cost security risks.
The 1980s a secure system needed a login and password to login, unneeded ports were closed. Open ports needed a password or didn't do a vital function. And trust your floppies. The 1990s a secure system needed protection against buffer overflows, firewalls to prevent outside sources from reaching internal systems. The 2000s a secure system needed protection from internal problems, where people would actively download malware, then spread across internal networks. The 2010s a secure system needs to be safe from internal attacks where hacks can effect what is going on internally. CPU level, memory viability...
As the bad guys who try to get in get more advanced, systems in general will need to get more secure, because the cost of getting broke into rises. The 1980's system, normally turning off the system, and rebuilding from backups was an appropriate fix, and changing the password. As the people who were given access was trusted to use the computer correctly.
OpenBSD is the Secure OS, not fast, easy to use, or available to many different types of hardware. It is secure and reliable (as reliability is considered a prerequisite of being secure)
OpenBSD is the OS that your run your servers which are connected to the internet. It is the Armored truck of the OS world.
If you need speed, ease of use, flexibility, hardware support, They are other OS's out there Free and Commercial that will do the trick.
The biggest treat to OpenBSD isn't its limitations, but the silly thought by executives who think having a unified solution will actually make work better. All on the same OS, and platform. On paper seems like it will be easier to support. But still on the same platform, a Developer, a Systems Admin, Network Engineer, Support rep, have very different jobs that are not so much transferable.
It is a sad state that we equate Debate skills with leadership skills. Debates are something you need to win or loose. Not an open discussion to grow and learn. You can win a debate on a false idea or lie over someone who has the truth and data on their side, however they may lack the debate skills to try to convince a neutral party. Often the best and well thoughout idea is far more complex then what can be stated in quick sound blurbs.
Presidential debates over the past few generations have not been really productive. Most of us are already had made up their mind on who they are voting for, most will just vote for whoever has a R or D on their party affiliation regardless of their stance. So the Debators neutral party is just a tiny fraction of the population. And for the most part they are trying to read non-verbal queues. (such as Nixon sweating) or finding someone just loosing their temper. The topic up for debate are not relevant as we have a good idea where the stance is.
What do you mean by serious IoT stuff vs the Toys we have now? The key reason of the popularity of wireless internet is due to the difficulty of upgrading buildings to current networking demands.
20 years ago it would be common to see Network with BNC cables. Category 5 was just started to take over. In terms to cable I think we are at Cat 7. When we hit limits on our speed we need to upgrade the building infrastructure. It is often cheaper and easier to go with wireless even if it is 5 years slower.
I can understand the security concern about thumbnail data especially encrypted data. But for other systems with the feature Including Windows and Some Linux file managers, Do they handle it differently?
There is a small but upward trending market for New Games for Nostalgic platforms. I find these new Games really show off the capability of these old systems, combined with all the new tricks that modern development can offer.
Today development for a C64 would be like programming a Game back 30 years ago with the development staff with access to a Supercomputer for development. That can optimize to a massive level for the Target system, while the code can be more manageable.
I have seen some nostalgic remakes done in CGA that actually makes CGA colors look good. While normally being the worst possible colors for display Cyan, Magenta, White (your choice of 16 colors for a background) Then you can pallet swap to Green (Light or dark), Red (Light or dark), Yellow (or brown, well dark yellow)
Still you really cannot get good colors, unless you are hooking to a blurry Composite display which you use the color blurring problem to your advantage to show more colors.
The diet industry doesn’t want that. We have been conditioned to believe in a noble life style of self sacrifice. So if we are not meeting culture definition of beauty then we tie it with health issues. We shame ourselves and others for not trying hard enough.
The concept of proper diets are easy. East foods with nutrients your body needs and calories in should equal calories out (to maintain weight) However the problem is bodies handle nutrients and calories differently. That salad and vegan diet may work for some people. While others will put their body in starvation mode so we will not burn calories as well and store them. Some people who eat food high in calories will get a burst of energy and burn it off, while others will get tired and store it.
But We expect a magic diet or give up on this one food ingredient then life would be better.
Some people gave up sugar and it did wonders others found they had too much fat in their diet.
I find the current voting patterns and ideals to be akin to what happened during the Great Depression. As much of this is from the end of the Great Recession. There are problems so let’s blame the other guy. The problem happened with the current system so let’s shake it up. We as a world culture had kicked out working, stable and mostly positive government for a different one because a strong arm personally is focused on a pain point of the system.
That is why most universities have personal interviews, check the students records, Look at other activities and accomplishments.... The SAT and the like tests, are about proper prep, vs actual knowledge and skill. If students took the test cold without prep, then it may be more fare of a test, but for the most part the more affluent students will have hours of SAT Test training, taken multiple practice tests, and prepped for the full test.
When I took the SAT vs the practice SAT, I was pushed back on the length of the test, I got worn out mid way. The info didn't get harder, just my patients.
College Degree Grading rarely uses standardized tests, and for the more modern professors your test scores may only account for about 1/3 of your grade. With Projects, Papers, Presentation, and Participation accounting for the other 2/3 of your grade.
We still have the random professor who will lecture the semester and your grade is based on the final exam. But I havn't personally ran across a professor like that in my undergrad or my masters. Granted I studied Computer Science and Business so most of my classes had more of a practical nature to it.

You add the tax to your final total. Then pay the states the tax.
