On the other hand, I was one of these "juniors" who received a new machine with Encarta already installed. I used it all the time.

  6. Re:PC Illiterate does not equal stupid on Woman Claims Ubuntu Kept Her From Online Classes · · Score: 1

She could have called Verizon and said "I have a Dell computer with Ubuntu and cannot use my Verizon DSL CD. How can I get online?" When the Dell rep told her that she can do everything she needs to do on this computer (ie, create Word docs), she could have asked "How do I do that?" She did neither (correct me if I'm wrong; I read the article yesterday), and instead called the local media to whine about it. She followed the advice of the "expert" but failed to ask how; that's a lack of problem solving skills, IMO.

  7. Re:PC Illiterate does not equal stupid on Woman Claims Ubuntu Kept Her From Online Classes · · Score: 1

It's not the inability to use a computer that makes her stupid. It's the complete lack of problem solving skills.

My company just fired my "IT Executive" boss in favor of hiring a developer turned consultant turned IT manager. The new guy started today, and it already feels like we've got a better plan (our previous plan was to not have a plan).

I'm 22 and have good genes, but I ride my bike to a friend's house to play co-op Guitar Hero. That's two 20-minute aerobic sessions per day, and I spend several hours playing video games. When I was a kid, we'd ride to the house of whoever's mom would let them have Mortal Kombat. Point being, there's no reason that kids can't play a seemingly unhealthy amount of video games while still getting some exercise.

With Guitar Hero you're always playing with a full band to a cheering audience. It's not as satisfying as learning an instrument in the long term, but when I just want a perfect 3.5 minutes of rock glory, Guitar Hero is much easier to manage.

  24. Mashups! on The Laptop as an Instrument? · · Score: 2, Interesting

The best laptop performance I've ever seen is a guy called Girl Talk. He makes whole songs out of pieces of pop songs. A lot of work goes into editing the pieces to make them fit, but they are still comprised of almost no original content. If you can find the song "smash your head," it's an excellent introduction. The other killer act I've seen is Dev/Null. His music is completely original, but I wouldn't be surprised if I get a few "this is not music" replies. Check out "bolt thrower in a chinese restaurant" or "nitrous induced skull fracture".

  25. Re:Why should I care about FF? on Ten Years of FFXIII? · · Score: 1

This is terrible advice. The original included such frustrations as members of your party not being able to tell when an enemy is defeated, so any queued attacks left on that target will miss.
