For a lot of commonly accessed stuff though, local is fine. Music for instance. You might not be able to fit your entire music collection on your phone (though most people probably can) but you could have a chunk of it that you are most likely to listen to locally and have streaming available for the other stuff.

It just seems like such a waste of bandwith. Nice to have available but not the sort of thing I would want to be using all the time. At least not when I am paying by the GB.

the battery issue is legitimate and I don't see much of a way around it, but I believe most of these systems require the user to approve the transaction before transferring money. I suspect most of them could be configured to allow some charges automatically (under 10 bucks) while others might require approval.

Ideally you could ID the vendor so that you could set it up to always pay public transit fares automatically while even a pack of gum at CVS might require you to hit a button or even enter a PIN.

When fairly unsophisticated thieves steal a debit or credit card the first place they usually go is a gas station and fill up all their friends cars... possibly even offering to fill up other cars for cash. I suspect grocery stores are similarly used. Its an easy way to get a small pile of useful goods out of a credit card before the owner knows its gone, and it doesn't set off alarm bells the way buying something larger would.

The real mind fuck in that example is trying to figure out how fast the treadmill needs to be going. If it goes "the same speed as the wheels are" then when the plane starts to move forward (say 10 mph) the treadmill should be going backward at the same rate (10mph) but that would spin the wheels up to 20mph (the plane is still moving forward at 10, relative rate at the wheels is 20) which means the treadmill has to speed up to 20mph. Without the plane even accelerating from 10mph the treadmill ends up accelerating out of control because it can never truly match the speed of the wheels!

Of course the plane still takes off and cares not for the trials and tribulations of the poor treadmill.

Those cheep ECU scanners don't do everything though. I was having issues with my ABS on my VW passat. I had pulled the ABS module a year ago and got it refurbished (because a new one is fucking expensive) and it had been fine but it was acting up again. I needed to determine if it was the Module again or if it was the speed sensor.

The tool to do this cost over 300 bucks. There are adapters for computers but I couldn't seem to find cheep/free software that would give me that data and I didn't want to buy an adapter that wasn't going to solve my problem. Ultimately I paid a mechanic 100 bucks just to diagnose the problem (10 minutes, tops) because it was cheaper than buying the tool.

For basic ECU issues like your engine light coming on, those 20-40 buck scanners work fine, but the more complex your car is the more complex tools you need to diagnose and maintain it.

Turns out I was right about the speed sensor. The behavior is slightly different than a bad module. Of course I needed the tool to tell me which of the 4 had gone bad.

It has been a couple of years since I have driven a toyota but my primary complaint with Toyotas is the suspension. Its soft and smooth and it feels like your gliding along on a cloud but it totally isolates you from the feel of the road. I'm sure many people love that about them but for me, I would much rather have a stiffer suspension that gives me a lot of feedback. For that I like the VWs (in this general price range, obviously higher end cars have nicer suspensions).

That is what I find boring about Toyotas, other than that though, I was very pleased with the one I owned.
