Why is it that you assume that the iPhone is targeted at corporate users?
Your thought process on this is far too narrow. Just because the iPhone has some of the features of a blackberry does not mean it has the same target market. The iPhone is going to be targeting individual consumers who dont have the infrastructure to support these kinds of features. With any luck you will be able to get many of the features you are talking about with gmail on the iPhone. Sure, its not corporate mail and its not necessarily suitable for corporate mail but its fantastic for the individual, especially if the iPhone can support gmail and google docs and the calendar application. I would love to have that kind of access on my phone... my personal phone. I don't carry a blackberry as part of my work and I probably never will.
Its not that the iPhone will replace blackberries, its that they have an entirely different target market, and hopefully some of the nice features of the iPhone will make it to the blackberries that corporations use.
you might be right, phone calls are probably the largest part of what I use my cell phone for. Followed by text messaging. But a close third is definitely web browsing. I love being able to get to gmail, or check baseball scores, or look up directions, or get to that really good recipie when I am out camping (or even at the store, figuring out what I need to buy for a meal).
All this is on a shitty mobile browser. I cant even get to decent maps on it. A real browser would be a big upgrade, and I would probably use it a lot more.
While the guy is stabbing and beating you, you are allowed to use force to subdue him. It is only after he is subdued that you are no longer allowed to beat him. Unfortunately many cops are so riled up and pissed off at this point that they take their anger out on the criminal they have subdued.
This is not allowed.
It would be nice if people didn't try to muddy the waters on this issue.
No... it really doesn't. I don't care what you do, the police do not have the right to beat the shit out of you once you are subdued. If you are actually taking swings at them it is within their rights to defend themselves but once you are on the ground and not attacking them (or in handcuffs as has been the case in some videos) they do not have the right to beat on you no matter how difficult it was to apprehend you.
Police work is very difficult and one of the reasons it is difficult is that you are not allowed to loose your temper and beat the shit out of someone for pissing you off, and there are plenty of people who will go out of their way to piss you off. If you don't like that, don't become a cop.
remember, fox is not conservative.... fox news is. Fox itself plays both sides of the fence on this one. Airing material on its regular network that gets bashed by the viewers of their news network and sometimes their own pundits.
I have no idea how they pull this off and keep viewers, but the clearly do.
no doubt it requires attention from the beginning. but from an end user perspective the technology is the same and the things that differentiate them are "the little things." I certainly know how much work has to go into getting those little things right though. Thats why apple has such an advantage, being good at something like that is a huge deal and it has to be the philosophy for the entire organization. From good engineers who think things through, to designers who write specs that include these details, to managers who give the teams the time they need to do it right.
It certainly is a huge deal. I wish more companies did it as well as apple (though I have to say, ive been pretty damn impressed with the Wii so far).
what is the standard deviation in an IQ test anyway? If I take the same test twice will I get the same score both times or might I be 1 or 2 points higher or lower?
Interesting I guess, but I too wonder how much a point of IQ really means.
Bush saying on 9/11 that we wont let these terrorists change our way of life.
but he was right, the terrorists didn't change his way of life or that of his cronies. Its just a matter of who, exactly he meant when he said "our" way of life.
yep, your exactly right, but from a tech perspective these phoense are "equal" hell the iPhone competitor could be superior and still loose ("No wifi, less space than a nomad... lame").
The difference is in attention to detail (response time, no trying to touch a scroll bar, ect) and specifically the features that the target markets wants instead of what some engineer thought would be cool.
Everybody tries to do this. Apple isn't alone. You dont think PalmOne, Motorola, Erikson, Nokia want to be considered "hip"?
The difference is, apple actually succedes at it.
Now before you flame the fuck out of me, think about what I'm actually saying... I am NOT saying that apple is better than these other companies, I am not saying that their technology is any different or better or anything. I am simply saying that while Motorola, Nokia, Microsoft, Creative Labs and all those other clowns want to be considered "Hip", Apple actually IS considered "hip" and that makes a big difference.
They didn't get into that position just by marketing, they didn't get there by having superior technology. They got there by figuring out what features and interfaces the majority of people would really dig and then selling that. Nobody else seems to do it as well as they do.
That is what makes apple different, if you don't understand that you will not understand what makes them successful.
This is fairly accurate. Current smartphones are targeted at business users almost exclusively. All the cool features are enterprise type stuff. Apple is creating a smart phone where the primary features are end user driven and YouTube is a big part of that.
Its true on all titles. Ive not heard much good about manhunt but its entirely possible to create a very good game that has a very adult story line. I, for one, wouldn't mind having a few games like that available, but who would dare develop one for any of the consoles?
Doesn't this seem wrong though? I mean I can see needing a license to say that a game is an official Nintendo Wii game with the logos and all that shit. But what is to stop them from selling me a disk that happens to work with the wii and then with me actually putting it in the wii and playing it?
This would be like saying certain music cant be released on CD because its offensive to the group that holds the CD trademark.
I'm sure it has something to do with the licensing on the SDK or something like that, but it still seems totally absurd. Didn't there used to be unlicensed games for the original NES? How did that work?
What I wonder is what advantage this actually gains the game publisher. I mean I understand vaporware in applications where you might go off and buy someone else's spreadsheet instead of waiting for the new Excel with new crazy cell coloring or something.
But its not like they would have lost out if they waited to announce this. I mean, its not like I'm going to hear about a game due out 2 years from now and think "well, Id better not buy any new games till that comes out."
I feel like the games industry could really wait a bit longer to announce things, it would probably help keep people from having overblown expectations too. Having too much time to think about something almost always results in being disappointed with the final product.
There are limits, no doubt, but I do feel that adults sometimes set that limit too low. Emotional maturity issues are certainly still there and I would not treat a kid like an adult when it comes to such maturity, but beating a game is a technical challenge and a kid can be much better at that then an adult in some cases.
First off, I don't want to give the impression that my parents were asses. This is pretty normal behavior and it wasn't constant or anything, it just sticks out in my memory and I try to avoid it. Frankly not many young kids parrot NOVA anyway so you wouldn't expect my
Depends on the kid. One of my friends has a son who was 11 when I met him, we game together and while he can be a little annoying (hes a bit hyper and at the age where that is usually at its worse) I'm more than happy to listen to him when it comes to a game he has played a bunch. Hell Ive done construction projects with him and his dad and he is reasonably competent for his age. Im willing to listen if he has ideas.
I do wonder if its harder to do this with ones own children thought, something about changing their diapers perhaps?
honestly I don't mind that as much. If a kid is being a little punk then he deserves to be treated like a little punk. The same is true of an adult who is acting like a little punk though.
Admittedly you might miss out because sometimes people who are punks are also useful, but they are not often worth the effort.
But a patent on a "tool designed to deliver blunt impact" would stifle innovation pretty effectively, and this is what most people are worried about it seems.
not if the hardware was a piece of shit. If your keypad is too small and your voice quality is low and you dont have a big enough screen (or a qwerty keyboard if that is your thing), you will never be happy with your phone.
The software thing would be nice though... an open platform with customizable apps and a nice lightweight inter applications communication system. But I dont ever expect to see that.
Actually, the "creation" parts of quicktime were moved to the "for pay" quicktime Pro on both platforms, it was available for 10 or 15 bucks. You enter a serial number to unlock it.
while I agree that the grandparent poster probably should have read the whole article, dosnt it seem kind of strange to be saying that you are happy that apple is releasing the brower on the one hand and complaining that they might be trying to take out your market share on the other hand?
Frankly I think this whole thing is paranoia. Just because jobs only chose to talk about IE (the predominant browser on windows) in his talk and on his slide, does not indicate that he is "hunting" OSS Browsers.
because we all know that corporations are the only ones that buy phones.
Why is it that you assume that the iPhone is targeted at corporate users?

You are growing "Greens" indoors, using hydroponics, under a security light... for your turtle
Riiiight... turtle, sure... enjoy your "greens"
yea, the steal them from Italian plumbers who have to chace them down and jump on the heads of the little fungi to kill them.
