so... women dont want men with huge muscles... I dont want chicks with double D breasts...
its still objectifying and requiring men to live up to a standard when all of the male sex symbols are metro-sexual.
see any geeks in that list? see any tough biker types? see any outdoors-men types?
I first noticed this trent with beverly hill 90210... inorder to be attractive by that shows standards (and the standards of the shows that followed in its wake) you needed to have those "Im oh so sensitive and affected" eyebrows...
EYEBROWS for christsake...
just because it doesnt take the form you expect it do doesnt mean that it isnt there....
on the other hand its not like I ran out to get eyebrow implants.
Bender: Clem Johnson? That sack of skin wouldn't have lasted one pitch in the old Robot Leagues. Now, Wireless Joe Jackson, there was a blern-hitting machine.
Leela: Exactly. He was a machine designed to hit blerns. I mean, come on, Wireless Joe was nothing but a programmable bat on wheels.
Bender: Oh, and I suppose Pitch-O-Mat 5000 was just a modified Howitzer?
actually I had this guy as a professor. I found his work to be quite interesting... hes not an entirely out there type as academics go... and I assure you that there are no Ivory towers on brandies' campus.
I understand your feelings about it, but just because there are practical real world questions that need to be asked about society doesnt mean we shouldnt be looking forward.
besides... do you really want a CS professor working of what are really social policy questions... he'd probably just video conference the kids and the parents together:)
I came to the conclusion years ago that it was people buying on speculation prior to the keynote and then selling off to take profit afterwards.
leading up to one of these events the stock price generally climbs steadily, holds for a while and then drops right after the keynote, but never that much and it usually recovers.
still... I used this to my advantage... I wanted to cash out the stock anyway (no reflection how I think it will perform... I needed the cash) and sold just weeks ago at the 52 week high, taking advantage of the pre-macworld growth!
of course now I wish I didnt need the cash... Id love to still have apple stock... or one of the new mac minis!
a company is not a monopoly because it tries to lock people out of its format. if apple had 5% of the audio player market and 5% of the online sales market they could be doing exactly what they are doing now and nobody would call them a monopoly. they must have reasonable control over the market.
so which one do they control.... are all the iPod sales just because the iTMS is so cool? why did the iPod sell so well before the iTMS then?
does the iTMS dominate its market? does the iPod only play music from the iTMS? is the iPod not compatible with other sources of music?
of course years from now when the change the firmware for some other reason and all of the harmony files stop working Im sure all those customers will be yelling at real and not at apple.
they made the change because they didn't want to get stuck supporting someone else's garbage for year to come.
if they really wanted to lock you out they would require you to buy all your music for the iPod from the iTMS but they dont do that, do they. you can get any music you want, but the only DRMed music they support is their own.
Its part of their agreement with the music industry to include DRM. Im sure real has a similar clause and they do have their own DRM... they just wernt happy that they couldnt use fairplay.
remember, you dont have to be the only game in town to be a monopoly, but you do have to control a market. Apple does not control the online music sales market, there are plenty of other players.
Microsoft is a monopoly. that was part of the findings of Fact in the lawsuit brought against them by the DOJ years ago.
they control a huge percentage of the OS market. this is not a problem, the DOJ contended (at the time) that they abused this monopoly... that is a problem.
what market does apple control 90% of. the hard drive based music player market... which isnt even a real market since one is forced to make a distinction in the storage medium.
but even if they do have a monopoly on MP3 players this is claiming that they have a monopoly on online music sales. show me evidence that they control 90% of that market and that they use that control to lock out others and we might have a case.
your right... if apple controlled more than 90% of even the downloadable music market then what they are doing might be considered monopolistic... but since their agreement with the music industry isnt exclusive I dont think that argument can be made.
they may have a controlling interest in the MP3 market (although that is debatable) but they absolutely do not have it in the online music sales market.
Its not like they hid the fact that the music contains DRM
but in order for this to be monopolistic wouldnt apple have to have a monopoly on the digital music market?
its not like iTunes is the only place to get music... there are plenty of other online sources with different DRM that might suit this customers needs. hell he could just buy CDs like people used to back in the day from that small organization... what were they called... the record companies?
Even if apple has a monopoly on MP3 players (which they dont) they let you get your music from anywhere you want. This lawsuit is completely frivolous.
Actually, thanks to the cape I would expect boston to fare pretty well... well not the city since the rising sea level would flood much of the land fill sections, but if you lived in say, medford where I live, its probably not going to be a problem since the wave would loose the vast majority of its energy when it hit Cape Cod.
All of new york city would be pretty much hosed though.
amazingly enough there are a ton of cars in japan... lost of people own them and there is plenty of trafic on the lesser roads.
nobody uses the highways because it cost $25 to travel a few prefectures. the whole country is only the size of california...
really it has more to do with the fact that they have a great passenger rail system... since the highways are so expensive it doesnt seem like such a bad idea to pay to take a (fast and comforrable) train.
you probably dont really want this... we would end up with very high tolls on all highways in all states and you basically wouldnt want to drive anywhere because of the cost.
you should see what the toll structure is like in Japan... they have big beautiful highways that are highly underused because it costs too much to travel on them.
your right! why wait a year... windows XP is outdated now!
wow... what a brilliant way to make absolutely sure that no home user will ever use it!
I wish they would do that with the rest of windows

now Im not positive... but Im pretty sure that Steve Jobs was not even AT APPLE when the DVD standard was first announced.
re-compress it as whatever you want.
MP3 is just a popular format... you could use apples own loss-less method if you want.
really, you should be burning your music to a CD anyway... what will you do when your Hard Drive crashes...
I disagree... slashdoters always agree on everything
but really the guy is upset because he has to buy an iPod to use the music he purchased at the iTMS.
he is accusing them of using the monopoly of the iTMS to sell iPods
if it was the reverse you could maybe try to make a case (although the ipod can play music from other sources)
apple has 80% of the online music market?
can you provide a source?
you are wrong

Im sure you can find a copy of it on your local P2P network!

as long as it isnt eating a huge chunk of federal highway money I dont really care what they do to their state.
this seems like a colossal waste and I doubt it will come in close to budget...
and it is sure to be ugly as sin... I wonder if it will be visible from space... if its going to be a quarter mile wide.
