Asherons Call 1 was still one of the best MMORPGs ever. I didn't really like the direction AC2 took, other than the quest system and the Crafting system was pretty good too. I've done grinds in AC, but the combat was fantastic.. I never really got bored fighting, as it's a very exciting game to play, combat wise. And the story was pretty bitchin', yo.
I don't think the original Star Wars trilogy HAVE held up that good, effects wise. You compare the original theatrical release to the latest digital retouch/remodeling of the trilogy and it's a lot better, in my opinion.
Because most stories are retellings. For example, if you strip Lord of the Rings down (book/movie) to its' simplest form, it'd be "Good Vs Evil" of which there are many different variations with differing twists etc, but generally can be stripped down to "Good Vs Evil".
I think the movie captures the graphic novel perfectly - it translated really well onto the big screen and kept its unique style with it. It wasn't a cinematic masterpiece, but it's not often you get those, that's why they're masterpieces.
The best kind CGI there is is when you're not thinking "Oh wow, that was cool special effects" you're thinking "Oh wow, I hope Luke/Frodo/etc gets out okay!"
I'm pretty damn sure they are but the person who manages to crack that kind of game would generate a LOT of interest.. if there was anything remotely like that, I'd be very interested. In fact, after I've posted this, I'm going to have a look at the link in your Sig, to see what yours is like.
Wow, really? I remember watching Armageddon as a 12 year old on one of the first DVD players in the UK [My Dad worked for a now-extinct computer company, and he often had to review products to see if they should stock them. Like DVD players, Lego Mindstorm etc] and I was absolutely blown away.
Compare the new Doctor Who series with the older ones.. it really is no contest. But CGI shouldn't really be there to blow you away, it should really add to the story or facilitate it. For example, 300 was shot on a green screen, apart from two shots. It added to the environment as they were able to easily adapt and change and produce great backgrounds.
Ahh, thanks for that. Here in the UK especially, Asbestos is mandated to be removed if it's found, so a lot of media displayed it as the kind of stuff only Satan would willingly put in his house.
It's all to do with dosage. You'd need to eat a couple of kilograms of green potatoes to get enough solanine to kill you. If you're next to a few printers every day that are shooting out toner dust into your lungs, it could clog it up similar to Asbestos - or is that not really that bad either?
In agreement with the sibling poster. Too often, automatic quest generators are such:
"Baker: Hi %PLAYER_NAME! I need %BAKERS_ITEM, which was stolen by %BANDIT_NAME. Get it back!"
"Captain: Hail, %PLAYER_NAME! We have a problem, in the %LOCATION, there are too many %MONSTER_NAMEs! Kill %NUMBER of them, to thin their numbers!"
Although not a MMORPG as such, Freelancer was a pretty good game, however, the Automatic Quest system was TERRIBLE. It was always Destroy a base/Capture the Leader/Wipe out the bandits/Assassinate the leader etc.
What MMORPGs need is to be character driven. In relation to previous posts about a Player being a King.. it makes sense, on a smaller scale (100-1000 players). I beleive you could have set Kingdoms, or be able to start your own Kingdom. You have one King, who is interested in setting up trade routes. He sets up a trade ministery, and hires someone to set up the trade. The Trade ministery needs to hire Traders. The Traders need a bodyguard to cross into the next city.
All of these tasks could be done by either Players or NPCs.. it's all about setting up a dynamic economy, where issues can arise.
Imagine you have a car with terrible steering. It always veers to the right, and has terrible understeer.
Now you get a brand new car, and it doesn't veer to the right. And it turns perfectly, without understeer or oversteer. You'd still have to get used to not having to correct the understeer.
Just because you're familiar with it, doesn't mean the car with the understeer is the easiest to use.
Yes, but you've willingly used G-mail, knowing full well that they search it to provide contextual ads. What I'm trying to get at, is that Google can't update your PC via Windows Update/Synaptic Update Manager etc. to include adware. Microsoft can do it, via Windows Update.
We know they use the Windows Update for less-than-necessary programs, such as the WGA.

This is why I quit Starcraft. Got sick of all the Chinese mineral-miners selling it on ebay.

Apart from, of course, Han shot first.

But thanks for the informative post.

Why is this modded offtopic? I thought it was pretty funny.
Hmm?
Manhunt got terrible reviews.. the only reason it sold at all was all the "BLOODIEST GAME EVAR!!1" talk that was flying about.
Table Tennis was really fun though, and I can't comment on Bully as I have never played it.
If theres one thing I have learned from Slashdot it's this: YOU NEED A BEOWULF CLUSTER AND IT HAS TO RUN LINUX!!11
I have a Frankenstein computer, with no pieces later than three years ago.. I think your "Top of the range" computer was a duff, friend.
C&C3 runs comfortably on medium-low on 1440x900 on a Nvidia 6600GT, 1.5 Gig of Ram and an AMD64 3000+.

But that's the only way we can get "Truly Epic Lulz"!
I personally use http://www.ninja.net./
It's a black google, with no advertising. Plus it sounds way cooler! Ninja! Come on folks, that's right up there with Pirates.
It's kinda like real life, just with a lot more furries.

1) Download nLite
2) Download your SATA drivers
3) Burn nLite with your SATA drivers, graphic drivers etc all installed
4) ????
5) Profit!
I don't have a floppy drive in my desktop. To get around my SATA drives needing the drivers for Windows, I've always used nLite.

No you're not, I'm less competitive than you!
Screw cars, if we can build up an empire, I want to steal a CARRIAGE! That'd be awesome, trampling pedestrians under my hijacked horses..
You go girl. You like so totally showed them.
Not!
Scandalous!
Not 100% sure on Doom, but I know Doom II had multiplayer capabilities over the intar-tubes.
