  1. That seems a harsh way to find out that your Windows machine has been rooted.

Or a good way, as it will force people to find a way to fix it. Who knows, maybe it will even teach some people some things about the dangers of rootkits.

  2. Ill placed worries on New Plan Lets Top HS Students Graduate 2 Years Early · · Score: 5, Insightful

That's far too young to be thrown into an environment with college students who are about 18 to 23 years old. ... Most of them are just not mature enough to handle that,

Exactly. That's why we're only sending the top students. There will always be outliers who will be able to fit in at a collegeriate level when they're 16. That's the whole point of this program.
Our worry shouldn't be whether or not they can fit in at that level (I know plenty of 16 year olds who have a better head on their shoulders than many college freshmen). Rather, our concern should be whether or not we have an accurate way of determining if a particular student is ready to move on. What we have to ensure is that this program doesn't fall prey to overzealous parents - especially in the "everyone is a winner" mentality that we currently possess in America. I guarantee that if this gets passed there will be an outcry of "my child shouldn't be discriminated against. (S)he should be able to head to college too at this grade!" They're going to have to be ready for that.

Not really. I've ran CS and CS2 under wine before, and it simply doesn't have the performance that the native ones have. In my case, I'm doing editing on images that are often times 12000x12000px, often times with over 100 layers. For simple edits, it's fine. But for larger projects it just cant handle it.

It was originally targeted towards rendering svg files only. They needed something they could use to render them on their mobile releases, but they didn't find anything that cross-platform so they rolled their own. Eventually they added canvas support to it, and ultimately made it their primary rendering engine for all html elements in this release.

Possibly. Even under their older javascript library, the graphical draw was the bottleneck, not the JS. Think of it like upgrading a computer - sure the new processor is nice, but switching the cassette tape for a new ssd is going to be slightly more noticeable.

  9. Vega on Opera 10.50 Beta Out, With Competitive JavaScript · · Score: 4, Insightful

I'm actually far more excited for VEGA (their new vector graphics lib) than the javascript update. Is having spiffy-fast js nice? Yea, but I think Vega is really where they're going to shine. It'll make transformations and other animations run far smoother in opera than any other browser (with the exception of firefox's direct2d experimental build that was released a while back). Kudos Opera, you're ahead of the game yet again.

  10. No. on Is Plagiarism In Literature Just Sampling? · · Score: 4, Informative

The difference between bands like Girl Talk who sample music to create new pieces, and someone copying someone else's words into a paper they're writing, is that Girl Talk doesn't claim to have made the samples. One of the aspects of why plagiarism is seen as wrong is because you're taking credit for someone else's work. When you're sampling music, you're crediting them.

If laws are put in place to do this, then people will find a way around it. Any form of p2p transfer will easily let people gain access to those images without touching the loggers. Criminals are smart, stop treating them as fools and punishing the common masses because of it.
