I recently installed mandrake 10 on my pc. I was tired of windows and wanted to finally make the jump to linux.
Big mistake.
By far, the easiest part was actually getting it to install. Mandrake has a fantastic install, and i commend them on that.
But I instantly lost functionality.
Things were annoyingly difficult to install. (command lines?! I havnt used those in almost a DECADE! Dont be an elistist here.)
It was slower then windows 2000. On all fronts. Opening programs, moving windows, even typing.
The applications did not play well with each other, at all.
Drag and drop never worked.
Configuring default settings was a pain.
Networking. Dear god. I spent 3 hours trying to get my network up, only to finally call my local network guru... who spent FOUR HOURS setting up my LAN. Which then stopped working when the computer rebooted due to a power outage.
Good luck trying to get a codec installed. Yeesh.
So I decided to go back to windows 2000, but only run open source apps on it.
Im here. Im totally willing to go open source only, but linux just BOMBED on me. It didnt work, and it was a struggle just to navigate.
You will not find a more willing computer user then me. Im serious. I WANT TO USE LINUX. But it just _sucks_ usability-wise compared to windows 2000.
(i would also like to thank the entire community for their help. you guys were awesome)
But sony could of ALSO just signed its own death warrant. If they are not able to reach market penetration with the ps3, and/or hd-dvd catches on first, then this is a MASSIVE problem for them, and could cost them a fortune.
The #1 reason the ps2 sold well in japan was because it was the cheapest dvd player on the market. Not because it could play games. Keep that in mind.
Also, most people are not going to see the big difference between DVD and HD, its just not as big of a leap as vhs and dvd.
Sony just punched the entire HD world in the face. Due to the popularity of the playstation, everyone will be able to play blue-ray disks. This will be the new video format that will have market penetration and therefor drive new MOVIE disk sales.
You know all those dvds you have? (ive got about 300) You get to re-purchase all of those in HD on blue-ray.
Huzzah!
Although this means nothing if you dont have an HD-tv. Or, if you are a bargain hunter, youve got an awesome range of super-cheap dvds coming your way.
While often simply dismissed musically as "hippie crap" and "meaningless poetic fluff," this is not what is important here.
What is important is that The Dead flies right in the face of the music industry.
You see, The Dead is often considered to be the most sucessful band in history, as they have played in front of more people then any group in musical history. Not only that, but each year the group (or whats left of them) makes millions in profits from various sales.
This is my favorite example of a "happy middle ground" that can be reached between bands and listeners. Sorry RIAA, your claims are false. And The Grateful Dead proves it.
Wait, you say, you use google all the time, and dont pay?
Sure you do. But you arnt a customer. You are part of their product.
Google's customers are the people who pay for the advertisements, NOT the people who use the service. The service is merely there to generate the audience that google then sells.
I own a ps2 and a gamecube, Ive had friends bring over their xbox on several occasions.
I run a 42inch widescreen hdtv.
Maybe it was just me, but I just didnt feel that the increased resolution in "THUG" made the xbox worthwhile.
Skip the technical aspects and go for game quality. I say, buy a used ps2. Its got the games, and plenty of ps2 games look great on hdtv. (heck high-res soul calibur 2 on xbox doesnt support widescreen! bleh!)
I used to always be the last-man-standing on my team. (I was good at dodging and catching, not so good at throwing)
What I would do towards the end of the match was collect all the balls on my side of the court, then roll them to the otherside and dare them to peg me with it.
Called me a pansy and stuff for it, but I would just brush it off, yawn, ect, until they got so mad they threw the ball at me. Then I would catch it.
People around here have a good sense of humor, and I'm going to have to edit that email now that the state of spyware has changed in the past few days.
You got it. Feel free to distribute this email widely. Use it as much as you want. You dont even have to give me credit.

Okay, here we go.
First, you need to download a decent web browser. The #1 cause of all that spyware is Internet Explorer allowing websites to automatically install things. (its from all that porn browsing you do.)
Try firefox. Its only 5 megs to download, and its the most simplistic web browser available. You will get no popups. Its very popular, even among non-computer-obsessed folk. My mom uses it.
http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/r el eases/0.9/FirefoxSetup-0.9.exe
Now, I assume you are getting wacky popups and stuff, even when not webbrowsing.
You need to install some spyware killers.
I reccomend Spybot and adaware. These two are will rip through your pc, killing spyware dead. Blam. It may kill some software you like, but its for the better. There will be something out there that can replace anything you have to get rid of. Oh no, no more gator cursors. Whatever. Deal with it, or dont get online ever again.
http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=m ir rors - for spybot. VERY high traffic here, so be warned. http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adawa re/ for adaware.
If those sites arnt working, you can always try "spybot download" and "adaware download" in google.
Then, on top of THOSE. (I know, I know) You need to run a virus scan proggy. Try AVG, its free and better then McAffe http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php
and last, but almost definitely not least, Windows Update.
Open up IE (you have to use IE for this) and go to www.windowsupdate.com Have MS scan your computer and install all the security stuff. Then reboot. This may take a long, long time, but it is the most crucial step.
The reason most people still use IE is because they dont know that its what allows all of those problems to occur. They simply dont know its as easy as installing firefox. Nor have they even _heard_ of it. I tell everyone who complains that firefox will halt the march of the spyware, but wont evict the current infestation.
In fact, its gotten to the point where i keep a pre-written email around that spells out how to fix infected windows PCs.
It walks them through firefox, adaware, spybot, AVG and windows update.
It also says in the email. "The reason you are getting infected is because you are browsing porn sites while using IE." Makes a lot of them turn red.:)
However, most people who complain about firefox's usability never explore its additional add-on features. Dunno if you played around with that, but the program is infinatly adaptable.
Mom has little interest in sticking it to "the man." She is just tired of popups.

Replying to myself, i know bad bad bad.

Doesnt this add value to the ipod, now that they are able to play more files?
I fail to see why apple would be pissed about that.

He walks, butt nekkid, into the ocean... tossing his money into the air in frustration. Its hilarious.
Better point then my own.
Very wise.
This is why you only buy SMALL TICKET items off of ebay.
:)
Im talking dvds, videogames, maybe hdds. If you get ripped off, the loss is minimal.
I thought everyone knew this already
I noticed that too :)
Well, he may be a scammer, but hes got good taste. (assuming hes referencing)
I love that book.

"SCO has been all but thrown out"
Which one is it?
Of course, refers to The Grateful Dead.

All the while giving away the vast majority of their music for free!

Yay.
No DTS, no sale.
I'll only re-buy these if each dvd of the movies gets a DTS track and commentary.
I could care less about the other extras.
Meanwhile, the small airlines (like jetblue) have fantastic customer service and flights at half the price.

Hmm, should I paste the email in here?
So you arnt going to have to look that hard.
of a brewery. No more earth means no more beer, and thats sad.
Kinda.
There will still be a market for non-open source speciality programs, that are only used by a small number of people.
Say, an internal office application.
So, yes, i think the best specialized programs are not open source. (but not period ^_- )
This will probably change, as more releases come from big open source firms like IBM.
Thats fine by me :)
However, most people who complain about firefox's usability never explore its additional add-on features. Dunno if you played around with that, but the program is infinatly adaptable.
Mom has little interest in sticking it to "the man." She is just tired of popups.
