Due to the very nature of open source, eventually, the best (general) programs will be open source programs. Period.
Its just a matter of time.
Everyone whose looked into "the business" of open source knows this. Revision after revision after revision. You can think of it like evolution. With the code out there, the only constraints are time and people. With enough time, there will be enough people to revise and continue working on the code.
They _will_ lose marketshare when open source gets popular. Firefox being the example of the first "big one." And boy, is it a doozy. Everyone I know who has tried firefox has stuck with it over IE. Including my mom, who now suggests it to other mom-types that are having computer problems. And thats a lot of moms.
Open source could be considered anti-competative, because the domineering open source program will be so good (in theory) that no competitor will be able to enter the market to compete. It could also be considered "communist" (propaganda-sense) because the work of the few massively benifits the many. Did I mention its free? So they cant compete with price? Not very capitalistic, is it?
Open source is pretty altruistic, at least compared to modern business practices. (then again, not urinating on people could be considered altruistic compared to modern business practices.)
but i digress.
Will this hurt their marketshare? You bet. Will this hurt the marketshare of the entire nation? Maybe, eventually.
Google's service is to provide an audience for the advertisers.
Their customers are the advertisers, not us. We are just part of their MASSIVE (incredibly so) audience. We are part of what makes google sucessful. The fact we use it.
Thanks for giving back, google. Ill loan you my eyes a few more times:)
The real reason that the ps2 was so sucessful IN JAPAN was not because of backwards compatability, or even top tier ps2 games. It was due to it being the least expensive dvd player on the market.
When it was released in japan, dvd had not really taken off. People saw the ps2, saw it was the cheapest dvd player, it played their psx games (which they already had.. so thats a space-saver there) and they could buy these nifty new games for it too.
There is no "edge" like dvd playability for any of the new systems. Finding that hook that appeals to the large market is going to be really tough. Sure, Ill get a ps3, but not on opening day. Probably not even in the first year. There are a metric crapload of great games out now. Why bother spending 50$ on the new one that has slightly better facial animation, when there is a massive bin of old 15$ games that are freaking great!? (both graphically and otherwise. the next gen systems will not be as big of a graphics leap as past systems)
Yeah. Im running this on a celeron 400. efficiency is important. It doesnt need to run FAST, just a bit faster would make it okay.
are "drow-shadows" (no idea!) and some wacked out theme on by default? Is there a "low impact" theme or something along those lines that I can grab? Im not to into theming and whatnot. I always go for the simplest and most straightforward. Any suggestions?
Ive got very little time and knowledge when it comes to linux. Im most interested in getting it set up so it WORKS, and the muddling ill have to do is minimal.
Think of it as trying to get linux to work without needing to know unix commands. (failed, as some installs require unix commands.. but thats only installing!)
Thanks for your feedback, AC.:)
Still need to figure out how to get bittorrent to work.
I finally decided to put my money where my mouth is (so to speak) and installed mandrake 10.
Brilliant, I must say. But, I only have one concern. I was a bit taken aback that the install ran slower then windows 2k on my celeron 400.
When i say slower, i mean that browsing the web took longer and programs took longer to load and execute. Windows took longer to move around the screen. Menus took longer to "pop up." Basic stuff, really.
Functionality-wise, I am not complaining, I really like how things are working so far. I just need to familiarize myself with a few more things (navigation, program location, ect) and ill be fine.
I admit though, I was looking forward to a slight speed increase. I was a bit taken aback that things actually slowed down.
Really, Well, I just installed mandrake 10 this weekend to replace w2k on an old pc. My first linux. And it was, free.
I downloaded it, burned it, and installed. I had minimal help and everything went very smoothly.
Er, right.
"linux ISNT free?" "really? heres 10 free copies of mandrake right now." "youll have to pay to support it." "ah, then dont you mean linux SUPPORT isnt free? Is windows support free?" *insert adhominem attack they are trained to do here*
I imagine the best thing you can do at these is hand out free linux install cds, and allow people to make the choice for themselves.
Again, mandrake 10 was SUPRISINGLY easy to get working.
Selfishness does not solve problems. It creates more.
So, you are an anti-american communist, eh?
Just kidding.
Well, we seem to have reached a wall. I would indeed like whats best, but so far, neither of us has really proposed anything that would work. The education system has always been an extremely difficult subject to tackle. Just remember, america is all about competition, and in every competition there are losers. Not everyone in america can be a glowing success. The best we can hope to do is try to equalize opportunities.. but there will always be those who are better or worse off then others.
Also, isnt the problem of a poor home life just that, a problem with the home life? This problem does indeed extend into schools, but I dont think changing the SCHOOL will prevent children from being abused at HOME.
Poor (i dont mean financially, dammit) students are CONSTANTLY dragging down the good students.
I dont claim to have all of the answers, especially not to abusive families. But at the same time I dont think some OTHER child should suffer because someone else has a bad home life. This is very selfish of me, yes, but the solution to abusive families has been needed for millenia. Noone has come up with something yet.
There is nothing quite like being a well educated and well read highschooler, who is constantly surrounded by morons and idiots. Its a destructive and debilitating environment, and does not encourage intellectual success for the people who are _already_ doing okay.
your argument spreads the problem among more people.
We shouldnt abandon those who are less fortunate, however. Do you have a solution?
Sorry, perhaps I should of been more specific. I was talking about highschools, not universities and colleges.
Proper supervision of this type can keep inappropriate content in check.
I agree. Thats why I suggested a physical layout solution, rather then a technological one. Kids should not be browsing porn or videogaming sites while at school.
I was purposefully vague when referring to India. When you look at the percentages, America is doing much better. But those really dont matter. Its the raw numbers that do, and India is churning out more, better educated people then America.
The consequence of inadequate performance is often horrible. Is this how we should incent our children in the US? I'd rather not.
I argue against your assertion. I think that a highschool diploma is _not_ a right, but should be something you actually have to work for or face the consequences. We shouldnt attempt to educate every child equally, only those that put forth the effort to be educated (and _can_ be)
Is not an entierly bad idea, but its not being done properly.
First off, not every kid should have an internet connection. Period. The Internet is not sesame street (which every kid SHOULD have.) In fact, I consider it more like the streets of NYC, at night, in the bad part of town.
Its simply not safe for kids to have un-guided access while at school. Blocking programs are even worse. As such, internet connections should be wide open and subjet to constant teacher review. Perhaps a single lab, with all monitors in view of the proctor would be considered adequate.
The rest of the money here is simply wasted. The current problems with america's education system is epidemic. Youve got underpaid, unmotivated and uneducated teachers, attempting to simply control a group of apathetic and uncaring students, who have little to no motivation and guidance from their gaurdians. The problem cannot be pinned on any single group. Everyone is messing up here, equally.
And as Americas education system continues to collapse the nation will be seriously hurt by this. A nation of unmotivated morons cannot compete with.. well.. india. Nor should we be able to. I dont know if youve looked at the job market in minute detail, but a major part of the problem is that people are too incompetant to do the job.
No. But you could of made the same argument for CDs just a few years back.
Eventually, people are going to want video at their fingertips not unlike music/mp3s is now. People want to make copies, not for the sake of having copies, but for ease of use.
See, its easier to have a remote-device that selects "spiderman," "cowboy bebop," "return of the king," or "big breasted asian honeys 4" then it is to get up off your chair, walk to the dvd shelf, find the disk, and swap out the dvd currently in your drive.
Before you call me lasy, remind yourself again of what is happening to CDs.
I think DRM is stupid, as it simply has never worked. Why bother wasting the money on something that has been demonstrated time and time again as a faulty non-working system that _always_ has workarounds. They should spend their money on something profitable.
Or you just care about your stuff. Many people are very careless.
My dad knocked over my ps2 when it was on its verticle stand about 2 mins after I said "be careful around the ps2. thats the wierd monolith thing sitting on my pc."
It works now, but the player 1 controller port is sometimes twitchy, and i need to wiggle it to work.
Does anyone else here have starpower as a cable provider?
They are the only competant cable company ive ever dealt with. Either that or Ive been very lucky.
Fast customer service, good turn around times, timely home visits (!) and a DAMN good deal. Ive got the uber-package; cable modem, 300~ish channels+hd, and a phone line.. for about 90$ a month. Unreal.
If we could just get textbooks that are written on a competent level, many educators would be happy.
Currently, textbooks are written by commitee and have to be "acceptable to community standards".. IN EVERY COMMUNITY IN THE COUNTRY (being ethnocentric today, sorry folks.)
This causes textbooks to be written so incredibly bland and/or biased, that it makes them near-worthless.
I had a professor in college who was/is a fairly renowned individual on the "educational circuit." She would get invited to exorbatantly expensive and lavish dinner parties, by TEXTBOOK makers. Why? Because they wanted her to "support." The books. All they needed was her to say a single line of support, and they could put it on their textbook.
To her credit, she didnt cave, and watched what she said the entire night.
But it makes you think. The people who write these textbooks are not in it for the education of our youth, but for the high profit margins.
(Mostly middle/highschool textbooks, but still applicable.)
Desert loving in your eyes all the way If I listen to your lies would you say I'm a man without conviction, I'm a man who doesn't know How to sell a contradiction, you come and go, you come and go

I just installed my first linux (mandrake 10) this weekend.
:-)
:D
Of course, im a geek. Not a linux geek, mind you, but still a geek.
Im having fun discovering a whole NEW slew of prolems to deal with. Of course, these are slight more managable then the ones i used to deal with
google, slashdot, and random linux gurus online have been wonderful. thanks folks!
I should pick this up.
You are just getting confused.
:)

Wait, here me out on this.
Im only talking about the ps2 Japan launch.
The real reason that the ps2 was so sucessful IN JAPAN was not because of backwards compatability, or even top tier ps2 games. It was due to it being the least expensive dvd player on the market.

Im probably just being bitter.
Yeah. Im running this on a celeron 400. efficiency is important. It doesnt need to run FAST, just a bit faster would make it okay.

ugh. "Surprisingly."
dammit.

I just use a .txt file and delete finished parts. Failing that, I jot it down on a bit of paper.
Sometimes Occam's Razor is a good guide. Simplicity works wonders.
Best suggestion yet.
;)
My school didnt have an honors program. Apparently, my punctuation has suffered due to this.
So, you are an anti-american communist, eh?

Grrr.. ch ch ch.. grrrr. ch ch ch... grrrr.. ch ch ch..
I need to replace the harddrive soon or im going to be without a firewall.
and you dont smoke, have kids, or pets. (?)
Or you just care about your stuff. Many people are very careless.

It works now, but the player 1 controller port is sometimes twitchy, and i need to wiggle it to work.
Seriously. Everyone who wants a ps2 has one at this point. Noone wants to re-buy another ps2.
I dont see this being a big seller in the US at all

I'll 2nd that.
You know, I was going to post "the first person to make a reference to 'friends' gets smacked with a wet noodle."
But I was too late.
-sigh-
I hate that show, and am convinced that it only suceeded because it ran after the simpsons.
As (pretty much) everyone who wants can have access to p2p, not so with these video camera networks.
Consider it taking money from the "enemy" for our own use :)
Seriously though, their fries are still damn good. I dont touch ANYTHING else on the menu except the fries.
And even then, thats an extremely rare treat.
Desert loving in your eyes all the way
