Its "giving away" NOTHING, the British (among others) are PAYING for this, they are funding those "billions" of research you are talking about.
Imho invest the 120B into anti air missile development and offer it free under a special license that requires you not to be in the JSF purchasing group ^_^
All they really want is what they are paying for, if the consortium of companies don't want them to have the software, fine, only buy the jets.
Normally by the time game makers get to this stage, all they are doing is stress testing and exploit testing, both of which are easy to spot (and more importantly fix) in a beta.
I can put one together for you, windows xp install is only around 300M when all is stripped down (no extra languages, no "upgrade from windows 9x", etc) office 2003 is equally small, when the fat is trimmed, as for other bits and pieces, apache last time i looked wasn't huge, neither is ws-ftp server, nero, mirc (yeah, its so huge you just had to mention it), p2p (again, non issue so far as space on install media goes, then of course enough room for drivers, lots of drivers, drivers for EVERYTHING.
All your comments go to show that you only ever look at a single OS. I build computers (piece of piss job, yeah i know, but i enjoy it) and windows (XP and the PE), linux and openBSD all play a part of the common install procedure.
You do know that memtest86 is on knoppix cds? just type memtest at the boot prompt ^_^
But nice selection, I have a custom built windows XP home edition OEM slipstream too, it loads most major MOBO drivers, has ability to load nvidia and ati offerings too, as well as firefox, spybot, adaware (used with permission), java vm, dotnetfx, about 80 windows updates since sp2 and videolan player. It also has a few 3dmarks, some game demos and sp2 saved in a (not copied at install time) directory. Fits on a 4.2G dvd fine:)
"ultimate boot cd" (has bartPE, offline pw editor and memtest on one disk) and knoppix v4 (some low end vid cards from nvidia and ati have refresh rate problems with 5) and v5 round out the basic stuff, have seagate tools and disc wizard handy too in case I need to get physical with a HDD.
Nono, blind interpreting software would read all that out, so even blind people would understand its a joke.
As for the "wtf, this is a news site why is this here", last time i looked into it (about 5-6 years back, when slashcode was readable before breakfast), its a communal blog with a comment system.
I like getting a funny every now and again, even newspapers have cartoons in them ^_^
So we get the whole AMD vs INTEL (over design work at least) saga, where each has infringed the patents of the other so many times that it would bankrupt the pair of them to get their day in court. The smart people of both companies put together a document to be signed that absolves (gives full rights to use) each other of any violations in regards to the making and designing of CPUs.
But of course this could only happen if MS thought there was a danger that the company would be destroyed (or severely weakened) as a result of the FOSS gathering patents and suing back.
I guess from the country that first brought you the nuclear arms race, software patents are just a capitalistic version:)
Correct, this is how my ISP does it, if you want your port 25 + windows networking ports opened, you go onto their website, and use the drop down box to select "open the floodgates" or something similar, about 5 min later they are open.
Protects customers who don't need to know, and keeps customers who do:)
Not to mention, mobile phones, house phones, hdtvs, blu-ray/hd-dvd players... just about anything that needs a bit of cpu grunt and must have a display output would benifit from integrateing a good cpu and graphics.
Imagine getting a nice, soft edged, menu effect enabled interface on your dvd player instead of the |> || |>|> symbols flashing every time we push a button?
Most pci cards.... Raid cards HAVE to have a boot rom, so too for video cards. Network cards typically come with the boot rom chip missing as standard (and not many people are in the habbit of useing them on a wintel arch machine anyway).
Its considered a big advantage for device makers to have their devices flash upgradeable, heck, some have it as a major selling point.
The thing that neither the article nor/. mention, is that for every version of every hardware release of every brand, the rootkit maker would need to craft a different code injector. If you have ever seen what happens to a main board when you use the wrong bios code you will understand what i mean:)
Of course, targeting the mainboards bios would make much more sense, there are much less different types, EVERY desktop pc has one, there are several distinct popular brands that never get updated from standard bios that it would be feasible.
How long before our AV software checks the bios hash to ensure safety? Oh wait, Microsoft said we don't need an antivirus anymore, duh ^_^
Hrmm, well running a pair of 7900gt cards atm, and on company of heroes, all settings maxed at 1902x1200 (dell 24") things get a little chunky, so yes, other than apple there are screens that need these.... mines pre-ordered btw:)
Nice idea about not being able to put in more ram or change a vid card, but last time i looked windows only counts a Mobo change as being "major hardware" and even then usually doesn't if you pick a new one with a similar chipset (nforce4ultra > nforce4sli for example).
And guess what, for OEM windows, the amount of changes you are allowed is..... NONE.
Did i happen to mention that this is the case for windows XP as well? Its only the retail one they are changing, and if you are buying retail windows copies, you are practically handing MS your wallet.
All in all, if you do upgrade, and change mobo, ring the number to activate, tell the operator that your old mobo failed, and this is what the company sent you as a warranty replacement, and they will activate your system with no further questions asked:)

If you read the parent, he was talking about a DVD.

The world is big enough for more than one OS ^_^

Hrmm, not sure how reliable i take a report from a company who recommends telstra and optus as good "friendly" ISPs.

Check our laws, we don't have "fair use" here, if you make a copy of a track onto your ipod/iriver/zen you are breaking the law, and can be punished.

Thank you, thank you, your all too kind ^_^
So, uh, have the smashmy...com guys got a spot in one of those lines?
