Despite being based on NT/2k/9x/XP/or WTF. Microsoft Vista has around 50,000,000 lines of code dating back to the early 1980's.
Microsoft has taken a position not to evaluate that code and make it more secure, instead they have introduced blanket, catch all, security measures. Firewalls, Stack Protection, Authorize Dialogs, protected processes etc. So what you basically have is a very insecure OS covered up by a security layer.. This is not a secure OS, a Secure OS does not need a protective layer wrapped around it, a secure OS does not need a firewall, why? because its internally secure without it.
The same people who are saying the catch phrase line "Microsoft did a pretty good job with Vista" are the same people who said the same thing about XP and 2k and NT. I remember hearing it.. "I think Microsoft did a pretty good job with Windows XP." That means they accept that its flawed, and there is risk running it, but they don't want to acknowledge it?
That is only if protected mode is on right.. so all this allows the 'sploit to do is download all of the user files and use/view any other process that the user has right to?
Yeah dude.. I don't see what the problem is either. Vista is mighty suck'ure.
You don't make decisions for other people. You make decisions for yourself. If you want to grow corn and sell it for food that is fine.. or you can sell it for fuel.. or you can burn it. It's yours and its up to you what you do with it. Alternatively if you want to get more "eco-friendly" by all means get so.
Oh wait.. you can't because government is making the choices for you.. They regulate what you can use for a fuel and when and who can grow when where and how.. So.. referring to your post.. who are you telling.. and uhh.. How does it feel to be told what to do by your rulers? If governments were truly in charge of feeding us (Like in the "totally awesome" USSR.) we would all starve.
No, its not a free market and if it was, nobody would have to make this choice. The decision of "to use corn for fuel or food" would be made naturally and the best possible outcome would occur without any government intervention. Our Government can't fix this problem.. why can't they just let us decide whats fuel?
Where these bureaucrats think they get the authority to come out and say.. "Oh.. Don't worry, we know whats best for you." I'll never know.
What good is the systems security if you have to mask it with a firewall? I think its valuable information. Generally your going to eventually run into a Vista install that has Windows Networking turned on and firewall ports open to it.
And in apples case.. Yes the firewall should be on by default. (despite that bugs underneath it should also be fixed.)
"...Telecommunications is another major area of success. With a variety of companies operating without burdensome government regulation, Somalia ranks high among African countries in the number of phone lines, mobile phone usage, and access to the Internet. And there ya go.. After what government did to them the people there don't want any such thing anymore.
-- However that is their land... and we need to fix the land of the free.. Change wont happen over night but we can start by reducing the government we have to its original form.. Then the people of the states themselves can decided if they need such a union anymore.. or indeed any government at all.
Yeah, I believe all people of the earth should throw down their governments, but what about small government? Hea, I'll take a small victory any day.
Conciser people will have 50% to 60% more money without the Government. (You have to include all the taxes places on products that would disappear making everything cheaper. Business don't pay taxes, consumers do because they just roll the taxes on the to the customers.)

>> Who will protect the oil tankers that fuel your factory? I would expect Oil Companies to protect their product from piracy or theft.. if thats what your talking about.
>> Who will predict when hurricanes are coming so you won't be drowned? The many private weather services and Insurance companies. You can get weather alerts provided by Verizon on your cell phone for like $1 a month.
>> Who will make sure the banks you keep your money in are stable? I would say the Federal Reserve has much to do to make them unstable by regulating the supply of money already. Currently money is Federally insured.. I don't see a reason why it cant be privately insured.
>> Who will prevent stock markets from being manipulated and destroying your business? You know I don't know but I'm sure private industry can find a better cheaper solution than government, in fact it would probably pop up overnight if many business were worried about such a thing.
>> For that matter, who will prevent you from being beaten up on the street by people bigger and meaner than you? I'm pretty big and mean now and I believe you have a right to defend yourself, I would also protect other people in my neighborhood from getting beaten up, however if you and your neighbors decide to chip in you could afford to hire security or "peace officers" that can break up fights and stop violence.

I never had a problem with Dialup Linux and Earthlink. Earthlink is basically everywhere too, just use username + phonenumber in wvdial. (I think username is the entire e-mail address or ELN/username was another way.. but that might be bad info as it was a long time ago.)
>> Look at what corporations did to this country prior to regulation.
Yes, lets look how this nation became the richest nation in the world in a short 100 years.

No, Government regulation has no place.. in fact government itself has no place. Government is just other people, they dont have any kind of morral athority over others. Attempting to control another man is wrong.
>> "The extent to which government policy creates a framework necessary for economic development and increased competitiveness."
I would happy being last on the so called list if our government would stay out of business. We don't need more regulations in technology we need less.
Might I note they were also the "educated workers" who wrote.. strike that.. were unable to write and had to copy, the "amazingly innovative" design of the original windows.. and continue to churn out (copy) "impressive software" such as Vista's new "Security Through Endless Warning Dialogs". As far as I've known, people at Microsoft just *think* they are smart and their software shows it.
I would have always thought Linux would be like a army, or marine or special forces or something, ready to scale walls and preform under pressure. but not exactly "nice" about it.
Oh right, because we all know that government funded education in WA is the best in the world. I'm not talking about Microsoft only anyhow. What a come back.. thats EXACTLY what I'm talking about. You think government is the solution to everything, but they screw up every program they do.. if government was in charge of feeding us, we would all starve. I think the only successful on time well run government program ever done was the National Weather Service.
Is it wrong you you to go into your neighbors house and take his money? What if you and 100 "friends" go and rob him.. does a large amount of people make it ok? And if you take his money and give it to the poor, is that wrong? What if you pave his driveway and rob him citing the cost of paving the driveway.. is it still wrong?
Answer: It is always wrong to steal.
It does not matter how it is done or who does it. A Government of any form is just a legal fiction, in reality it is just other people, they do not have any such moral authority to steal, enslave, or to kill. There position as so called rulers or fancy titles they give themselves does not provide them any "extra" rights or authority.. No other person or group of people have the right to steal from, enslave, or you kill you.. just as you possess no right to steal from, enslave or kill others.
We go along with the government, some of us because we are mistaken and believe some elected and popular people have a right to use control and force on other people...or in my case we are scared of the guns they possess.
Is it fair to use force on other people? it is NOT, so it is therefor not ok to take money by force.
Linux could boot very fast if only code and programs and hardware that were required to run did. A lot of the checks it makes on booting (discovering new hardware, loading modules, populating udev, etc..)
If this was done by the installer once and then never needed again then it could come up much faster.. it is mostly a moot point though because rebooting is something that should be really done infrequently.
It can be very fast though.. I actually once made Linux a system that went from OFF to Google in 15 seconds. (2.2 kernel). It just depends on how the system is implemented. A fairer statement would be "..Common Linux desktop distros that take a long time to boot.."
Being Libertarian I have no problem with having social freedoms, that is at the root of san fran's values but.. they don't even really do it from a liberty mindset..
For instance: They want Gay Marriage "licenses" as in.. permission from the state to get married. This is absolutely absurd because the state should not have the power to issue any form of permission to marry any other consenting adult. The correct answer to the problem is revoking government involvement in marriage all together regardless of sex.. but it washes over people.. they dont even seem to understand that there are limits as to what government should be allowed to control. The concept of a rights themselves are warped in most peoples minds appears to be "what the government *allows* you to do."
New Hampshire is how it should be.. they have probably the lowest tax burden of any state, do you hear there people or business complaining? Hell no, they are laughing at us in WA.
The waste and oppression of this state is unreal and I want to leave. I have stories to tell of what its like to run a business in Seattle and deal with these idiotic bureaucrats that you wouldn't believe. The nanny'ess of this place is absurd.
I here by declare a basic idea to the residents of Washington.. nothing big just something. Lets just allow a liqueur store to sell alcohol on Sunday, I mean WTF is that for.. god doesn't want you to drink on Sunday.. are we protecting someone from something?? NO its just someont government can control that we haven't fought for it yet.. If we wanted it it would REQUIRE 225,000 signatures to even GET a vote....and its not that I have a personal gripe in this law or like to drink but its just one example of something I can think off hand to explain the stupidity of this local government. They do what they want here and ignore the people most of the time.
1. The Government hardly listens to the people. We vote it down, they over turn it, rinse and repeat.. It happens all the time.
2. The people of this state.. no, strike that.. the people in Seattle are generally inclined to think that the solution to any and all problems is government, more government, and more money for government.. Rarely if ever do ideas of less or better government come into the picture. Thus the people of the entire state need to pay huge volumes of taxes to the state.
This area has an abundance of wealth solely based on the lack of government regulation in the software and computer industry. The wealth however is often transfered back to the state to fund needless and sometimes competing programs (Monorail/Light Rail) and there is a huge amount of waste. Those who think they are "entitled" will eventually ruin this state and destroy its fortune.
It's kinda ironic to think that "more government" is the answer to the common ills of prosperity that was caused by something that government couldn't figure out how to regulate in the first place..
Thats pretty much right but don't write off Gnome so quickly, its also a very usable system. There are some things that could be better about it but in the case of a few things Apple has patents on them.. for instance the spring loaded folders. Nautilus had this some time ago but had to remove the function as Apple was going to sue.
>> Early on, Apple put a lot of research into their human interface guidelines.
So has Gnome. Sun spent a great deal of time user testing, and researching Gnome. This VASTLY improved Gnomes usability from 1.4 to 2.4'ish. Gnome has also done this testing on modern fast web connected computers. http://developer.gnome.org/projects/gup/ut1_report /report_main.html Gnome is very pleasing to use, and it follows its UI Guidelines closer than anyone else. Gnome gets a lot of flack for removing preferences, but some should be removed.. for instance the Task List applet.. at one time you could set (in pixels) how large each task in the list would be.. now the applet determines the best size depending on how much space is free. (whereas you could still have a preference for this now.. the *need* for it is very low.) I think Gnome is for people who don't want to know about the computer they just want to get stuff done. (Much like OS X)
however.. lets say you want a power users desktop.. well Linux just so happens to have the best thing there as well, KDE. Or maybe its something fast and light weight.. again in comes Linux with XFCE and Fluxbox.
OS X is a great system, but my biggest complaint with it is its performance vs Linux, All the UI's in Linux mentioned give better performance than Aqua. (or Aero and Luna for that matter.)
>> Using a Mac and claiming you're more secure is like moving to the woods and claiming your crime rate is lower.
uhh.. yeah.. and it would also be TRUE!
See.. thats another great point you bring up. People say "well if everyone used Mac's they wouldn't be so secure.." In the real world they don't.. they use windows. Security does not care whats popular, if a system isn't attacked as much it lowers your rate of risk because black hats are not using vast amounts of energy to attack your platform.

Well, I guess.. hell, for that matter why get rid of that old VAX system just when your getting use to it?
OP might check out WindowLab, if hes looking for a newer, smarter, WM with practically no system hit. (or maybe XFCE for a full, fast environment)

Yes, and if you notice their condition has improved quite a bit since the UN stopped trying to force a government on them after the civil war.
