so he got a letter from guinness about his typo site, freaked, and regestered a bunch more urls cause he was pissed off.
then, when he got another letter from the wipo he did... nothing.
(sorry about the inelegant links, i just dont want to be flamed by people thinking i made this up)
the rest of the wipo link goes on to basically say that since he gave no evidence to the contrary, they had no choice but to find for guinness.
I'm not saying that it's always right to take away someone's domain over a protest, but that there should be a standard, and if he doesn't even care enough to reply to the complaint, wtf? why shouldn't they take it away?
i think that part of the problem is that big companies are used to dealing in a certain way, with other big companies. 10 years ago, there wasn't a way for a little guy to make a reall big, loud stink about something. he could stand out in front of their business with a sign, but that was about it. Now, if i don't like a beer company for some reason (why was he doing this, again?) i can buy a bunch of domain names and make a loud noise, audible to anyone with more that $1 a day and a computer.
The response was strongly worded, by a lawyer. this is how companies are used to treating the only people they're used to dealing with like this... other big companies, who are used to getting threatening lawyer letters.
I"m just confused as to why jamie would pick this particular example, when there are many much better ones out there...
pick the free unix of your choice, it will come with everything you need.
read lots about securing it, if you get a linux.
elsewise, if you get *bsd, make sure your hardware is supported.
configure sendmail (you _need_ a domain name for this... smtp doesn't work with ip's )
have fun
yep. this is exactly what i do.
as long as you can rely on your connection (avoid pacbell/southwestern bell like the plague, they don't like to do static ip) it's much nicer.
you get as much security as you want, and it's very satisfying to have easy access to/dev/null:)
and as a consumate bullshitter, i saw nothing to suggest the oppost either. basically, this was exactly what we should have expected, since he's not in a position to tell us anything at this point. the only reason they consented to the interview in the first place is that it would have looked worse to avoid it than to consent and then say nothing. this way they're hopeing we'll be satisfied and leave them alone.
>mindwire.org - Like/. but with less spelling
>errors, more interesting science stories, better,
>comments & no JonKa
um... wouldn't that be 'fewer' ? i mean, if you're going to bitch about spelling...
> what is linux 6.2
why, just as the rumored 1 windows install that works (on a certain mr gate's desk) this is the secret kernel that linus keeps for himself.
hmm... if he says he 'gave' everyone the thing, he'll have a hell of a time in court trying to say he really meant "loan":)
kinda makes you wonder... maybe what he and the ceo are really laughing about is the fact that they're getting paid god awful amounts of money for such a totaly brain dead idea.
their hardware's not closed, i'm running 3 (or 4, depending on how you count them) os's on my macs at home.
it's just better. no, really, i mean that. apart from CPU speed, which isn't exactly their fault, the only thing that the pc world does better than apple is fsb, and that's arguable, as you can pass more on a 100mhz 128 bit wide bus than you can on a 133mhz 64 bit bus.
as soon as os x ships, i expect that everyone will shut up about the speed issue, as 2 500mhz procs on a big ass wide bus are arguably better than 1 ghz proc being strangled to death by a crappy os.
but, that's just my opinion.
you guys could have held off posting this till i was done with the darn thing...
i think it's interesting to note how many/. people are interested in what happens with this other os... and how many times people beg for it to run on their wintel hardware:)
did anyone else notice that he's forgotten about the advantages of the microkernel? the whole point of darwin is that a buggy device driver _wont't_ bring down the kernel.
I'm all in favor of regulation (not censorship) of code, in this era of script kiddies running amok causing millions of dollars of damages.
um... how do you regulate code? isnt this like trying to regulate guns - they're already out there, so stopping the legal purchase of new ones doesn't have much effect?
i had a vcr that did that once, but commercials come in 15, 30, or 60 second varieties, so it was really irritating when i'd have to back up. it got so that i just didn't use the feature.
both these devicse are basically digital VCRs, and unless i'm wrong, they record the commercials along with the program?
which means that you take the (freely distributed) content right along with the commercials (spam) that pay for it..... and watch it later.
how is this the same as music, where you _pay_ for the music you get, unless you download it for free?
i mean, how many people are posting "every episode of Ally Mcbeal with comercials edited out" on their websites for download?
Amazon, for instance, tracks all of my purchases, and, in return, gives me the only useful product recommendations I've seen on any commercial web site. Other sites could track my reading patterns (within their own site, not across others!) to figure out what types of articles actually interest me so that they can provide better content in the future. They need to plant a cookie on my browser to do that tracking, and they may even benefit from demographic information from me (to see what 20 year-old white males like to read), but they never need to know my real name, address, or phone number.
i hate to do this, but i'm gonna have to whip out a Lars quote on this one.
That ultimately is what the biggest beef about this whole thing [is], is that Napster could have so easily avoided this whole thing. It's like, OK, 'It's January, my name is Napster, or I'm Sean, or whoever the CEO was at the time, we have this ervice, we would like to know if you are interested in being part of it.'
-- Lars
Amazon does this with your knoweldge, to provide you a service. Toys R Us does this with out the knowledge of little suzy, to provide mattel with a service.

>They offer add-on packages that aren't really part of the distro because they're not really mature yet, such as XFree86 4.0, x 4 is on disk 3 (or 2, can't remember which) ofc, it's not 4.01, but it's there.
suse is apparently really big in europe, i picked them because they came with lots of stuff (6 cds, 1 & a half of which seem to be games, but you also get stuff like X 4.0, with a graphical config, Star office, ApplixWare, 30 days of VMware (very nice:) etc.:) for the same price as redhat's minimal newbie setup i started out with a turbo disk that i got at a LUG, and quickly found that the PATH was hosed beyond belief. rather than figure out exactly where they'd screwed it up, i just went out and bought suse, and have been reasonably happy with them. the down side is that they're a little bit too customized... you have to make sure you use their patches on the kernel, etc. i think the think i like best is the availability of the Reiser FS - my thinkpad is unstable under the best of circumstances, and the journaling FS saves my ass when it won't un-suspend it's self in the middle of an accounting test.
um.... so that would be why i'm running linux on a G3 tower right? and why i've still got a 512k mac in the garage? and why i work part time at a mac dealership? because i'm clueless about macs:) my comment was in response to server admin's needs for programs, which are prolly command line to begin with. lemme restate my question and see if i can be clearer: 1. X is already ported, and will run under whatever they call the gui when it's released 2. gcc is already ported. 3. if we just port the various toolkits that the current guis are written in, why would we need to redo the interface?
first - i think they've announced that server and "consumer" versions won't be seperate after they actually release the consumer version. second - there was a port of X announced the other day... so why would you really _need_ to redo the UI? as long as it runs, it runs. if a whole lot of people like it after you recompile it, then worry about the front end. possibly a better idea is to port QT or the GTK?
right, so it won't be admissible as evidence, but can still be part of the public record? no thanks, my exploits with baby oil should remain between me and whoever i convince to join me.
actually, X 4.0 performance screams, as long as you don't mind that it locks the machine periodically. as far as fit & finish and quality of apm bios, check out a G3 powerbook, or even an ibook. there is nothing that doesn't work on them under the influence of our favorate flightless waterfoul
excuse me? innovation? just because microsoft did it before yahoo doesn't mean they invented it. if you can point me to one thing that microsoft has invented, i'll mail you a buck. really. i mean it. oh - but that would mean you'd lose the cover of being anonymous when you post, wouldnt it:)
i know i'm gonna get bitch slapped for this (just keep telling yourselves "at least it's not naked jackie chan") but i gotta go with the powerbook G3. 10 hrs of battery life, hot swappable everything (yank that dvd drive to save to zip) graphics accelerator (yeah, it's an ati, but at least the mac games are optimized for it) Dual monitor capability out a the box, ir, usb, it runs Linux, hell, with an emulator it'll even run win32s. which reminds me - anyone know anything about netbsd on a mac?
hmm... somehow i ended up at the bottom of the karma pile, so i'll try again. mirror here: http://www.stonehenge-net.com/carniv ore .mpg
and another. whoo, that's big! http://www.stonehenge-net.com/carnivore.mpg is a t1, hopefully the sysadmin at school won't kill me for this :) (hi ryan)
