What work of RMS's is linux based on? I'm sure Linus would be very interested to hear about this, as he seems to remember writing the thing by scratch himself.
> mplayer (based on libavcodec, which uses X264)
you seem to misunderstand the differrence between a derived work and linking to a library. the point of the GPL is that people can make derived works with your source code. Linking to a GPL library is no different than linking to a microsoft DLL.
how is this standing on someone's shoulders anymore than using msvc++ would be ? The compiler doesn't force you to license the resulting binary under the GPL, so I don't see your point here.
You are right about the BSD variants openly sharing code, but thats more due to good sportsmanship and an informal gentlemans code than anything. Nothing (as far as I know) prevents me from taking a branch from one of them and creating a "Secure-BSD" and locking the code and my modifications away and not give the source away.
> The GPL... allows you to stand upon the shoulders...
It's always interesting to see people depate BSD vs GPL in theoretical terms, while completly ignoring how both actually work in the real world.
The most prominant BSD licensed products (Free, Open and Net ) all happily share between themselves, thus effectivly standing on each other's shoulders. What they don't do is waste time on stupid license discussions, or being worried about what someone else might do with their code.
The GPL world, otoh, spends it's efforts on discussions like this one... and I can't find a single instance of people standing on each other's shoulders.
(not that i think linus should switch licenses. afterall, it's his software. he can license it any way he likes.)
Unless the fcc steps in and screws this up, this is the perfect opportunity for companies like speakeasy to become more competative... simply by offering the same services they offer now. or for communities to pool their resources, get fiber, and set up a wifi mesh network to provide access to everyone.
>We tried that one...worked for 200 years and died for some reason.:-)
It died because we got lazy and stupid. If we had been paying attention when the religious fundamentalists took over instead of feeling sorry for ourselves we'd still have it.
The good news is that we have a revolving door govt in America, and if we can pry our lazy asses off our couches for long enough to vote next time, we might actually get some representation in our government.
The worst problem the Pinto had was the way the fuel filler hose was connected to the tank. It ripped away much to easily in a crash and sprayed gas into the body of the car.
bzzzt.
it wasn't the hose that was the problem, it was the fuel pump. this was the first american car with an electric fuel pump in the tank. when you crashed, the pump would keep pushing fuel down the fuel line. _this_ caused the spray. the recall was to fit a device that cut off the fuel pump if you crashed, not because of a fuel filter.
Yes, Intel's compiler is faster on intel hardware than gcc. this is true in every os that runs on intel hardware... but makes almost no difference in the real world, except for processor intensive apps ( mp3 ripping, dvd encoding, etc ). so, for 99 % of the code written for any os, it just makes more sense to use a portable compiler, and a good language.

Your definition of "real world" is a lot different to ours.
Instead of relying on ad-hominem attacks, please try to actually address the question. What real world applications that a typical mac user is going to use ( other than those I've listed above ) are going to benefit from a heavily optimized compiler?
what about the fact that I don't like c++ makes me unqualified to discuss the relative merits of it's design when compared with objective c? In your opinion, what is so bad about objective c ? please site actual projects where you've used the language, and where c++ would have been a superior choice
>Its a shame that most of the new OS X dev work is done using Objective-C and not C++
why is this a shame? They're using a language that actually makes sense, rather than one that's just a bunch of ideas cobbled together on top of C, and you think this is a shame? or is it just that you didn't have an Objective C class when you went to devry*, so you don't know anything about it?

* before you flame me on this, they didn't have an objective c class when I went there either. It's not that you suck, just that devry does.
so... when there's low page count on a saturday and the slashdot editors post 'ask slashdot' articles about 'how do i use a mouse' on the front page in the hopes that everyone will flame them for being stupid... it's illegal now?
what's a syslink? are you trying to spell 'symlink' ?
If so, you seem to be complaning that the hacks you implemented to make the old version work are no longer necessary. how is this bad?

why would a bunch of windows shared libraries be in the linux kernel? they're not in the windows kernel.
what benefit would there be in having this in the kernel? do you even know the difference between the kernel and userspace? are you just throwing fancy words around because they sound cool? you realise that it's impossible to impress women with/. posts, right?
I met david axmark on a Linux Lunacy cruise, where he was talking about how great mysql was. When pressed about things like transaction support ( this was a couple of years ago ) and stored procedures he responded "yes, well, it's the most popular database on the planet".
He didn't seem to be at all bothered that this the main argument people give for using windows.
While C can be interpreted, it's usually compiled. a true scripting language, such as SH or CSH is one which is interpreted, line by line, as tho one were reading a script ( thus... scripting ).
The term has been expanded to include such languages as Perl which are compiled at run time.
I just cannot stand to see people use the argument
that America is the next Facist state when they
obviously have no idea what the hell that really
means or what happens when you are really in one.
well, instead of beating our chests and calling names, let's actually see how we measure up, shall we?
( definitions from wikipedia.org )
Fascism (in Italian, fascismo)
capitalized, was the authoritarian political movement which ruled Italy from 1922 to 1943 under the leadership of Benito Mussolini.
ok... so far so good. we're not in italy in the 20s or 30s.
Fascism was typified by attempts to impose state control over all aspects of life.
hm... here were starting to get closer: http://www.clantonadvertiser.com/articles/2005/06/ 26/news/b-news.txtA proposed constitutional ammendment against burning the flag
The term fascism has come to mean any system of government resembling Mussolini's, that in various combinations:
uses violence and modern techniques of propaganda and censorship to forcibly suppress political opposition.
engages in severe economic and social regimentation.
engages in corporatism.
implements totalitarianism.
so... how many of those are we not doing in the US right now?
yeah, but icc is largely a drop-in for gcc. and it's fast. ( it's even faster than mvc/gcc on AMD hardware ). so what'll happen is that in january, people developing for mactel will suddenly get a speed boost if they compile with intel's compiler.
thank you. Why are people always trying to use some fancy wysiwyg crap? My wife teaches dreamweaver classes to her fellow employees at apple, but wont let them use anything but the editor.
um... i believe you're about 5 years behind the ball here. all major distros have shipped with ext3 or reiserfs as their default for at least that long.
According to Linux advocates, an alternative to EXT2FS would be ReiserFS. Unfortunately, ReiserFS is still in beta stage.
um... no. reiser 4 is in beta. reiser 3 has been production ready for years.
so, basically, you're just cutting and pasting random unsupported ( when not just blatantly false ) trolls hoping for a response.
>shouldn't there be a period of grace for logged >in users
um... let's see. how hard is it to copy the cookie from your browser's cache and then fake the user agent ? really really simple? ok. so the answer to your question is no.

yup. that's kinda the point
>And the real answer is that no one should impose their value system on anyone else. Ever. Under any circumstances.
:)
and, of course, by telling us what we should never do you're not trying to impose _your_ value system on us at all, are you
sigh. if only people would spend more time working on their own problems and less telling other people what to do.
