  1. Where is the outrage?? on Draft Horses Are Helping Upgrade Cell Towers In Wisconsin (npr.org) · · Score: 0

Call Scott Walker! Bring in Paul Ryan! These horses are taking away AMERICAN JOBS! We must put a stop to it. Not only that, but these freeloading horses just eat all our food and don't even pay any taxes! Time to stand up and fight for the American middle class! We need to build a great wall around Wisconsin...a pen, if you will...and keep these horses OUT!

  2. There's no way some random hacker felt that passionately *against* the concept of net neutrality...right? I mean, the only people who support it are luddite ultra-conservatives. Someone must have been paid handsomely for this. (I'm looking at you, Verizon.)

  4. I just can't believe Windows is still a thing in 2017. At least Linux still has them beat, thanks to Android!

  5. Good feedback requires expertise on Ask Slashdot: How To Improve At Work When You're Not Getting Feedback? · · Score: 2

While I get the occasional "great job" from management at my job, that kind of feedback is largely meaningless. In order to give good feedback, you have to actually be *knowledgeable* in the field in question. In the case of programming, you actually have to review the code and understand it, including design and testing patterns, etc. In my company, that has never happened. No one ever looks at the code I produce, and there are only two other people who could even make sense of it. I think this is a huge problem.

  6. Access to funds to expand, without having to sell half your soul to a VC?

  7. Honestly, how? And why? Even on the server side, most of their stuff can be used for free. I know the trend is to sell "support contracts" and such, but I've never worked for a company that actually purchased one. I'm just curious. I really want them to succeed, as long as they do it with Free software. I'm just amazed that they make any money at all.

  8. Inexplicable on Social Media Giants Sued For Helping ISIS (torontosun.com) · · Score: 1

I've never understood the common reaction of those grieving from a tragedy to demand *financial compensation*. Their family members died, not them! Why do they think they are entitled to money at all? The only explanation is that they are greedy bastards who only care about themselves and see an opportunity to take advantage of the tragic situation. It's sickening.

It would be one thing if they were taking a stand to fight against an unjust system, but they're not doing that at all. They should all be ashamed of themselves. I'm sure they're already working out book deals and film rights to milk it even further. Pathetic.

Uh...what exactly do you think the point of mass surveillance is? Just for fun? It's an attempt—as misguided as it may be—to stop people from breaking the law. Terrorists, scammers, paedophiles, etc. It's not as if the people pushing for it are *wanting* it to be abused, they are just completely naive. What is comical is the fact that these people honestly believe they know what they're talking about and that this is a good idea. The regulations won't even slow down the actual criminals from continuing to hide their communications from the authorities.

I had no idea there was anywhere *near* 50% of homes that still had a landline in 2017. That is insane to me. I thought we finally gave up on them a decade ago or so. Are they including VoIP as well? I hope this means we can finally end any and all subsidies given to communication companies for landlines. There is simply no need for them, anymore. Honestly, I'd be fine if the government subsidized some kind of VoIP device for those remaining senior citizen luddites who refuse to adapt to the modern world rather than allow this antiquated technology continue. It must cost us a fortune to maintain all those lines.

Not particularly expressive, difficult for newcomers to learn, ridiculous, inconsistent grammar rules, etc. It is my hope that continued advances in machine translation will allow people to revert to using their own languages even more. Universal translators will one day be a thing. But today is not that day.

Underestimating organizations like ISIS, as if they could not employ unbreakable encryption trivially, is a huge mistake. It actually puts the public at *greater* risk. Of course this wouldn't even be an issue if Windows wasn't such a giant piece of garbage that it's taken this long to get a mainstream 64-bit operating system and applications. I've been running a 64-bit build of Firefox on Linux since, what, 2004?
