Thank you for that reminder Anonymous. I suggest that anyone with a doubt about that 60s technology read "Digital Apollo". Please get yourself informed before you start bad mouthing tech you know nothing about.
I think it's great that NASA is making it a point to do some PR with Orion.
Let me also add, as further evidence of throttling, that I checked my connection on one instance by going to YouTube. I watched a high def video with no problems. I also went over to CBS and watched some streaming video with no problems. Vimeo, no problems. Then I went back to Netflix and tried again, and got the same old "your connection has slowed..."
I moved here to Tempe Arizona from Haiku, Maui, Hawaii two weeks ago. In Hawaii I could watch Netflix streaming video on my DSL connection with no problems at all. AND, my connection there was most def slower than here, and the telcom infrastructure there is behind what it is on the mainland USA. Explain that as BS please!
I have been experiencing the issue of throttling as well. I recently moved and have new DSL service so at first I was blaming my provider. However, after several evenings of being interrupted, I decided to test the connection with my provider's speed checking tools and found that I had a great connection! Then I went back to Netflix and noticed the little box that tells you what your video quality is. Mine was "high" so I started watching again. It paused to "buffer" and I checked the little box again. This time it said "low". Obvious bandwidth throttling.
So what's the deal Netflix? Could it be that the weak economy is hurting your bottom line and this your way of weeding out thousands of customers?? Are you doing this just to get people frustrated enough that they'll stop using "watch instantly"? I for one will now be firing up the viewer in the evenings and just letting it run, thus wasting your time and energy. You throttle me and I'll just step on the gas pedal harder. Good luck with that.
I like this idea. Wouldn't it be a good thing if we had a law like that here in the USA?? Putting aside the issues of what would constitute a download of a copywritten material, what I really like is it takes away costly litigation and disproportionate settlements a la RIAA!!
Apple cracks me up! Steve Jobs is like some messiah that comes out to the mountain top every so often to give a sermon and everything he says and does is perfect and right and never questioned!! br>
For me, Apple is too "look at me I'm different". Right. Different, anlong with all the other fanboyz.
I can't say I'm that excited about anything new here. This doeesn't make me want to run out and drop a grand on a laptop... sorry.
By the way, Steve Jobs needs to get some new clothes!!
To quote you:
"(yes, some people who see value in compensating the artist will never believe the price should be zero)."
Some people? You mean the artist! You mean musicians like myself??
Hey I know what. How about starting tomorrow, you go do whatever it is you do for a living FOR FREE!
Screw the RIAA and people like you that think it should all be free.
This whole thing stinks anyway. That pass is BS and nothing more than a scheme cooked up to get people through airports faster and easethe load on the TSA people. It is TOTALLY a compromise in airline security allowed by means of a $100 bill. Yes, encryption is a good idea, just like breathing is a good idea.
NO! They sold out because someone on high told them to. I can still hear Lars whining in that flash animated anti-filesharing ad. Hey, we work hard....
Right because it's in the dumb-assed contract you signed Lars!
I never liked their music much, and after the whole Napster witch hunt, I pretty much think they suck now. But, I wish them the best of luck, they'll need it.
I am in agreement 100% LMB. I was just going on ( to my ever so attentive girlfriend ) about how the storage medium is only as good as the availability of the device to decode it!! Your idea of a disc with instructions on how to build a decoder device is genius!!
It is nieve to think that a culture 1000 years from now will be willing to take the time to decipher the miniscule amount of data we can store given our current tech. on ONE CD!!!!
I think, the storage medium must be something that can be deciphered as easily as our curent tech allowed us to reproduce sound from the recent find of the French recording scratched on smoke darkened paper!!! It was just a squiggly line, but it has been reproduced as a digital sound with common, current tech.
Nature is a pretty cool designer. The snake... no limbs and yet it can negotiate some crazy terrain. Brilliant!
I think looking to natures designs for inspiration is an excellent approach to robotics.
This reminds me of that wining that the music biz "suits" got Metallica to do ealier his decade...
"we work hard for our money, and you're stealing it by downloading.." bullshit!!!!
What happens when you write some little piece of nifty code and give it away? It grows and gets better and you give it away some more. Eventually everyone is using it and likes it. You offer up a really nice version of it with support for a price tag one day. Guess what, if it's good people will pay a REASONABLE amount for it.
Music is the same way. Radiohead is getting it right. I paid them $10 and downloaded their music LEGALLY!!!!!!
I love this! Small scale manufactring is such a wonderful boom to the electronics industry. I'm sure this development will inspire others, including myself, to persue the use of piezoelectrics and laser based manufacturing of components in micro-robotics devices. Just don't let them get near a bug zapper!!!
Intelligence and insight into things others cannot understand can be very alienating. One can feel very alone and frustrated. Ignorance is bliss... hell yes!
I'd agree with that. What will we see 20 years down the road? Mutations in our bodies? Diseases spawned by cloned meat? Who knows. This is all to quick. We're only something like ten years down the road from Dolly the sheep for crying out loud!!! I do not like this!! LABEL IT CLONED!!!!
I have a camera on the back of my Isuzu Vehicross SUV. It has a terrible blind spot behind the car. Being the techno savvy geek that I am, I was very excited to do the high tech thing and install a backup camera. However, there is a glitch I did not think of. It only takes a light film of road grime to render the camera nearly useless. I have to clean it every day. That's maintenance I didn't think of when I installed it! Funny how we overlook the obvious when the eye candy of high tech distracts us from reality.
Yeah there is an agenda here. How was it that they even discovered it's alleged properties??? I mean it's not like you take every mineral you find and chuck some into a beaker of radioactive water to see what happens???!!
Or am I wrong... is that really how the scientific method is applied??
I remain skeptical. I want to know why and how it does it' magic... because until then, it just hat. Magic.
I looked on a posted .txt file I found with a Google search and mine wasn't there. I changed my password anyway.
...something wonderful!

umm fuck you, I work for a living.
This is such BS. How many other email accounts have been "hacked" because of a little social engineering and nothing came of it??? Total BS!

What?? I have purchased THREE machines from Dell in the past year, ALL with XP. They offer them... you just have to look and read a little!

I love the idea of high res punch cards!!!

This is classic political bullshit. They're just answering in a way that makes you think he's all about YOU! (rolls eyes)
IF the others would respond, it would just be more of the same.
Ron Paul... the spoiler vote for the republicans in 2008.
Crap!

Agreed. I'd buy it. It blows doors over Windoze. I just hate Apple and their proprietary crap!

I love you /. Here's to another decade of stories and news I read on this site FIRST!!

Yeah one has to wonder about the possible connection between the DOD computer hack in June and this particular incident????
