Wired is reporting that researchers have created the longest synthetic genome to date by threading together four long strands of DNA
Wooohooo! I'm buying stocks worth 582k of synthetic cloth companies. I'm telling you guys, DNA strands will be _the_ thing come 2020. You never know what these crazy researchers end up doing!
Is there room in the market for MS? Or will they squeeze VMWare out?
VirtualPC and VMWare are both competitive tools for the job. In fact, they're both so refined that your ultimate purchase decision will be affected more by your own needs than by any inherent problems with the programs. VirtualPC keeps things simple and if you need more control than Virtual PC offers, you should get VMware.
If someone is using a p2p network on a cell 24/7, it can adversely impact the service of their neighbors. It has the effect of not providing the service paid for.
WHAT?? Was it written in the ISP subscription forms that you are not supposed to use p2p? And if I use p2p network and the whole cell is affected then its fuckin time you upgraded the b/w of the cell!!!
It's like saying, "You are using a Microwave and a fridge, your neighbor cannot switch on the lights....so, you need to switch off your fridge". pah!
The insider purports to have the background story on the 'red ring of death' (RROD) failures and why they are so common
What background story? Cheap parts, not enough testing blah blah...Where are the specifics?...and the causes mentioned for RROD were already known ages back.
I tend to disagree on the part that mother nature should look after us. Who are you blaming after all? What is mother nature? I just can't wrap my head around the entity that is blamed here?
Are you blaming earth for being so imperfect with all the volcanoes and earthquakes? Are you blaming yourself for continuously degrading the environment thus making it harder for you to live?
If they manage to get everyone with a motocycle to get a car, what about the 2x to 3x times fuel consumption of the car and the 2x times pollution caused by cars?
Environmentally, it's bad news. If they tell me it's fuel efficiency is close to a motorcycle, then i'm sold!
This was bound to happen. Software is flawed no matter how much you fix it. Just because Windows was used by a large number of people it was the target till now. As Linux and MAC OS get more and more popular and people start adopting it in a large scale, there will be more people trying to break its security system, finding buffer overflow bugs etc etc...
Mac OS is just as flawed as Windows or Linux and just because "It just works" doesn't mean "It is not flawed".
SP1 might make things more complicated with even more bugs which will make more Microsoft Vista users to ditch it and migrate to Linux. Better get more people invest now, than hear more bad reviews after SP1 release. Smartass(for the dumb) marketing department.
Thank you. But i'll pass.
According to AP reports, the USPTO has looked at the patents issued to MercExchange, and in early findings, the USPTO said that the patents held by MercExchange should not have been issued.
Aye!! You just sneezed!! I have a patent on this style of sneezing! Pay me $$$$ !!
Aye! You just did a double click using the mouse! I own the patent for double clicking! Pay me now!!
Aye!! You just farted!! It smells crap!! ta-da..patent... I will sue ya!!
I wonder what other patents were granted in the past...
..... if extra dimensions exist, as string theory suggests, and if they are large enough."
So, string theorists still have a way out if black holes are not formed. They will just claim it wasn't large enough for us to detect or notice it and more analysis or experiments are needeed to arrive at any conclusion.
When it is said they would be extremely small, if they ever form by colliding the protons, I don't think the labs are equipped enough to identify/notice the formation of microscopic black holes when information related to the macrospoic ones are very basic.

Oh wow! From the posts above I can clearly tell /. has a huge sysadmin crowd!

Well, be careful what you wish for as I certainly wouldn't like falling chairs instead of snowfall/rain !

CNN news & Digg? and you are complaining that nobody at /. read a comment posted on the website digg.com?
:)
You're new here, aren't you?
TFA says:
A Real Programmer Can Write in Any Language (C, Java, Lisp, Ada)
Why C matters...
Why C++ matters...
Why lisp matters...
Why Java matters...
Why Ada matters...
So, I don't think the article is biased.
I would suggest C -> C++ -> Python -> Ruby.... in that order.

(looking at your sig) No wonder your cat is the boss now :P
No we couldn't, we would spend to much time pointing out ... to much time... or .... too much time ? ;)
Is it just me or can anyone see a single country with this rating?
Probably only the hardware that can run either Microsoft or Linux variants of OLPC OS ( if in future someone decides to create one) ??

I tried to find some specs, but the site is already slashdotted.
The specs are not out yet. It will be revealed at the auto show.

*Gets ready for apple fanboy bashing*
I think it is fixed in Office 2003 with the SP2 update.
Now that he carries around a squirt gun with grape juice, I don't think he will be that worried. ;-)
Money can buy anything! Such is the pathetic state in this world right now! Or was it like this always?

Don't act dumb. It is no longer cute.
I have already patented that...bitch! Look it up! :p
